Anyone have SSD installed in his PS3, or bought new one with SSD pre-installed. Hows performance of DUST with SSD, any freezes, or micro-freezes still there? Texture load lag still present ? |

One of my corp members has one and said it made a HUGE difference. He is always the first into and out of matches and says he rarely lags anymore. I found some 128gb SSD drives on new egg for under a hundred bucks for the black f riday sales, so if you're wanting to buy one now is definitely the time. |

Installing a ssd is the only way you can improve your Ps3. I spawn before my team mates load their maps. Wish we could replace ram as well. |

I'd like to chime in and say don't use a 6Gb (SATA3) drive, the ps3 is 2006 tech and won't use it to full speed capability. I used a 3Gb (SATA2), and even then its speed is wasted. However the old 1.5 drives being ideal, the controllers are are kinda crap back then. I suggest a 3 Gb SATA2 for money value.
Game/ App load up times are the same with etheir drive type. The SSD shines where multiple small data checks are needed, such as navigating the market, and texture loading. Cheers!
EDIT: I've have had no freezes after installing the SSD. |

The PS3 uses a SATA (SATA-150) controller that has a maximum transfer speed of 1.5 Gb/s
so to save money get a SATA 1 SSD their really cheap and worth it imo sure beats the stock 54k RPM ***** |

I personally love mine. I'm into matches before everyone else, and can make it to the first objective before they're done spawning. Also the frames don't drop nearly as often as they used to/ as much as everyone else complains about.
Also Skyrim runs way better. Fewer framerate drops and quick load times are awesome. |

I use 500MB HDD 7200RPM.
HDD: - heat incrase... almost none - good performance incrase - low cost compared to sdd :)
SDD: - heat incrase... almost none ;) - PS3 dont care well about SDD type drive -> faster degrade of SDD - nice performance incrase - COST!
Decision is up to you... |

when someone says faster HDD I'm not thinking of the 7200rpm frequently found at your local wal-mart or best buy i'm referring to the 10k and 15k hdd's
EDIT: They are getitng cheaper

Isn't SSD way much cheapier that 15k SATA(not SAS or FC) 2.5 HDD (dunno if 15k SATA even exists, probably limited by SATA-I interface), or even 10k VelociRaptors cost more than regular SSD? Also HDD performance is not only read/write, theres also access time and lag, while its okay for large files but when it comes to big amount of small files, SSD should shine (hopefully will solve my problem with "poping" textures and dynamic mesh in DUST) I also wonder what heat would make 15k rpm 2.5 HDD within limited space of PS3 and no ventilation but CPU blower. My current PS3 (Gen2) heats more than my PC, tho i dont realy care much about heat, but still. I am also not sure that you can connect SAS HDD to SATA-I controller, i am sure its same connectors but firmware of PS3 wont recognize it for sure.
if i get it correctly: 5.200 RPM HDD ~ 90/100mb/s read 7.200 RPM HDD ~ 140/150mb/s read 10k / 15k is higher than that for sure SSD ~ 260mb/s read [limited to 150mb/s by SATA-I of PS3] As result, IMO the main difference in between HDD and SSD for PS3 is access time and lag. Correct me if i am wrong. |

Even a fast HD will never match an SSD for SEEK time, which is a performance stat that is not throttled by the sata 1 interface. Furthermore, SSD deterioration is as much as a problem as plasma burn-in: an issue with first gen tech that has been resolved soundly yet the impression persists. Avoid SSD's that advertise support of TRIM and you are fine (TRIM support as a feature means first gen controller, the ones with the issue in question). |

Can't believe you guys are already resorting to Tech improvements to have an edge! The game is supposed to run smooth on a standard PS3, and will do so eventually. Wasting your money IMHO. |

i wouldn't say anyone's "looking for an edge". just a better gaming experience. i'm kicking around the idea of getting an SSD too. especially since i only paid like $10 for my PS3 (using gift cards and such, i only had to pay for shipping ), i would still come out on top cost wise.
i know this is still a beta, so, i'm not looking to upgrade until the final release. i'll see how that runs and make my decision from there. i know it's easy to switch a hard drive, but it's still a bit nerve racking for someone who has never done something like that. the horror stories of stripping the blue screws kinda has me waiting .
on a side note, i don't think sony would have put in a switchable hard drive option on the PS3 if they didn't want people to switch it out. sure, the operating tech in the PS3 is "out dated", but upgradeability allows the PS3 to have an extended lifespan when compared to the Xbox and such. i can see the PS3 running for another 2-5 years without a hitch.
tbh, i would rather have sony offer "upgrade" packages for the PS3 at like $150 or so rather than a PS4 coming out any time soon. it would include whatever upgrades would allow the PS3 to run faster... more RAM, SSD standard, anything that can be updated through hardware/software. i know some things can't be upgraded, but whatever can be could be included in the package. it would save sony R&D costs, and probably be more profitable in the end. after that, the PS4 should come out. my guess something like this could add a minimum of 5 years to the PS3, maybe even more. i'd rather spend $100-200 on an upgrade package than $300-600 on a new system.
we all know games, music, and movies (even books and paper media), are eventually going to become electronic media soon enough. no more disks and paper. my hope is that the PS4, whenever it comes out, embraces this. it would probably need a disk drive simply because physical media isn't going to disappear over night, but i'm hoping most games are downloadable instead of disk based.
then again, that's just my opinion. i could be wrong. |

That is only human nature; seeking a technological edge has been hard-wired into our brains ever since we first sharpened rocks with other rocks and hunted with them. It wasn't just nature - it was survival. In New Eden, the unforgiving mechanics force those who brave it to use their basic instincts to adapt and survive. That is why Technetium (for T2 industry) is so monopolized.
Basically, "resorting to Tech improvements to have an edge" is what humanity does, and it's a Silver Rule of New Eden. |

I installed a 7200 RPM HDD on my ps3 and It does make a huge difference. I would have put an SSD in, but I only put a new HDD in because my 250gb ran outta room so i needed something with a lot more space (I have 37 games on my PS3). I got a 750gb HDD. |

Best thing to get for PS3 is probably a Hybrid SS HDD. That way you get decent capacity and don't spend an arm and leg. Smaller SSD's aren't an option for anyone who has a lot of games installed. Meaning you'd have to spend $160 minimum for a 256GiB SSD, least one that has any worthwhile io performance. Best option to use in PS3 would be a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive, can get a 500GB/4GB SLC version for $80ish, or a 750GB/8GB SLC version for $130.
You have to remember for a regular SSD to work properly it has to have OS support which PS3 doesn't have. Those two hybrid drives work regardless of OS. I'm planning on getting one of those hybrid drives for mine next time I have the extra cash. They're both 7200rpm drives. |
