Anyone have SSD installed in his PS3, or bought new one with SSD pre-installed. Hows performance of DUST with SSD, any freezes, or micro-freezes still there? Texture load lag still present ? |

Isn't SSD way much cheapier that 15k SATA(not SAS or FC) 2.5 HDD (dunno if 15k SATA even exists, probably limited by SATA-I interface), or even 10k VelociRaptors cost more than regular SSD? Also HDD performance is not only read/write, theres also access time and lag, while its okay for large files but when it comes to big amount of small files, SSD should shine (hopefully will solve my problem with "poping" textures and dynamic mesh in DUST) I also wonder what heat would make 15k rpm 2.5 HDD within limited space of PS3 and no ventilation but CPU blower. My current PS3 (Gen2) heats more than my PC, tho i dont realy care much about heat, but still. I am also not sure that you can connect SAS HDD to SATA-I controller, i am sure its same connectors but firmware of PS3 wont recognize it for sure.
if i get it correctly: 5.200 RPM HDD ~ 90/100mb/s read 7.200 RPM HDD ~ 140/150mb/s read 10k / 15k is higher than that for sure SSD ~ 260mb/s read [limited to 150mb/s by SATA-I of PS3] As result, IMO the main difference in between HDD and SSD for PS3 is access time and lag. Correct me if i am wrong. |

Noc Tempre wrote:Even a fast HD will never match an SSD for SEEK time, which is a performance stat that is not throttled by the sata 1 interface. Furthermore, SSD deterioration is as much as a problem as plasma burn-in: an issue with first gen tech that has been resolved soundly yet the impression persists. Avoid SSD's that advertise support of TRIM and you are fine (TRIM support as a feature means first gen controller, the ones with the issue in question). Thanks alot for mentioning TRIM function, will avoid it. +1 |
