Incorrect, SSD's work as a hard drive regardless of OS. Now, some of the OS functions will be disregarded (TRIM support) and the like, but it is a hard drive through and through. I know, I run one. I did have to upgrade the firmware of the SSD and now it runs B E A utifully.
Low heat, Super fast load speeds - only from HD and it makes up for my slower internet connection. I suggest OCZ or intel |

it speeds everything up, making the whole PS3 experience a bit better. Don't upgrade if you don't think that it's worth it for you, but don't judge what it's worth to others. |

Conraire wrote:Best thing to get for PS3 is probably a Hybrid SS HDD. That way you get decent capacity and don't spend an arm and leg. Smaller SSD's aren't an option for anyone who has a lot of games installed. Meaning you'd have to spend $160 minimum for a 256GiB SSD, least one that has any worthwhile io performance. Best option to use in PS3 would be a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive, can get a 500GB/4GB SLC version for $80ish, or a 750GB/8GB SLC version for $130.
You have to remember for a regular SSD to work properly it has to have OS support which PS3 doesn't have. Those two hybrid drives work regardless of OS. I'm planning on getting one of those hybrid drives for mine next time I have the extra cash. They're both 7200rpm drives.
OS Support Required is a first gen bug. They used OS side drivers to compensate for flaws in the early controllers. Hence my comment to AVOID drives that prominently mention trim support. SSDs are plug and play.
Any drive made within the past year by a major company does not suffer from these problems. Personally I recommend sticking to these brands: OCZ Cruicial Kingston Samsung Intel PNY
Prioritize seek time and random read. Vertex 3 was the best value last I checked, but I personally have a crucial M4. Happy hunting on Monday! |

The PS3 uses a SATA 1.5Gbs so you might want to avoid spending mega bucks on a super fast SATA 3 SSD as you will not get anywhere near the speed advertised.
Note: I also moved that topic to the Locker Room. Even though DUST related it is more about fitting a Solid State Drive into a PS3. |

Noc, that Seagate hybrid drive has 8GB of SLC Nand in it. Meaning it doesn't have the wearing problems that modern MLC and Nand does. If the OS isn't optimized properly to run a SSD, it completely trashes the wear leveling, and makes the drive wear out faster than it would, say if it were in a WinXP+ PC.
Read the Reviews for the Momentus XT 500gb and 750gb drives. They perform pretty similar to SSD as far as boot times go, especially after the firmware optimizes for the things you run normally. About the only thing they don't do is saturate the bus throughput, like an SSD can. But, if all you do is play DUST it'll likely have 90% or more of the game loaded into it's NAND at which point you're playing off an SSD.
SSD's are great for PCs where you can have a second large HDD for storage. Not so much for the PS3 that can really only have 1 drive. Most people aren't going to buy an SSD to put into their PS3 that costs more than the console itself. Which is something you would need to do if you have more than just a few games. For example, my PS3 had the 160gb hdd, it would be a storage downgrade for me to put anything less in it, just for faster boot times. Meaning in order to upgrade I'd need to spend closer to 200 for a 256gb SSD. If I spend that much it's going in my PC, not my PS3. At which point my 128gb Samsung 830 is going to my mothers computer. |

yes, it also will not see much improvement unless the game is 100% Downloaded and Installed such as Dust. if the game is BluRay based then you're still limited to its slow speed
i bought mine specifically for Dust. although i just so happened to buy SKyrim as well. have noticed some improvement with Skyrim (have yet to try Dust on it) although it is BluRay based so its not the best thing to compare. i'm sure Dust will run amazing though! |

cuts 25 seconds off of loading times, and allows you to render fine scale details quicker. side by side comparison with my roommate on matches involving extreme "lag." as it turns out, this is in part frame rate chug. in this environment i am consistently out performing him by about 15 FPS. |

I'm not affiliated, just always buy my pc stuff from them, not found better or much cheaper. Likewise, in the USA...
I personally always recommend MicroCenter for any and all PC parts and accessories. I know others might disagree with me but in my area (Southwest Ohio/Sharonville location) I just haven't found anyone offering better prices on top notch computer components.
Hell, I built an i5-2500k based gaming PC (my 1st ever build) last year for a little over $500. A comparable build I was considering from CyberPower was going to cost me about 50% more money. Of course I had to take advantage of sales when they came available but it was well worth the few extra weeks and few corners cut.
I always comparison shop with TigerDirect and Newegg before buying anything but 9/10 times they just don't come close to the prices on the same items from MicroCenter...especially when it comes to MicroCenter's CPU/Motherboard bundles.
Just a little info I thought I would pass along for anyone considering a SSD purchase or gaming PC any time in the near future! I'm planning to start my 2nd PC build next month using an i5-3570K CPU and Radeon HD 7870 GPU...can't wait to dig in and get going (just waiting for my tax return) |

For what it is worth..the Dust 514+PS3 combo should come fitted with an SSD as it greatly improves the experience with the game. Its a lot more smoother and snappier in menus. |

SSD's seem to really help with Unreal Engine games in general. (Stupid slow loading textures.)
Also, when combined with a disposable sprint/hack/uplink/whatever scout fitting at the start of a skirmish match and you are pretty much guaranteed to get the first hack. |
