Long time ago on the forums, I saw someone criticizing CCP for using Unreal as it's DUST engine. Their point was that the Unreal engine was old and had been surpassed.
I purchased X-Com: Enemy Unknown on the day it was released and was pleasantly surprised to see Unreal as the engine of that game.
It seems that CCP knows a thing or two. |

Knows... that it's cheaper then building their own?
EDIT UNREAL is a good engine...it's like comparing something you've made and something you bought already made(UNREAL). The made product is good but if it was homemade it would be so much better. |

Do you really want them distracted by building thier own engine?
Or do you mean that was the only alternative to the Unreal engine? |

unfortunately the unreal engine is a bad engine for ps3 and for this kind of game, dilay about texture load is a trademark, and is not appropriate for massive player, for this is needed a propriety engine develop for this objective like the zipper engine of mag or eve engine but is crazy for free to play project. |

The main issue is that Unreal Engine 3 generally performs quite poorly on PS3. But we're way too far into development now to make any fundamental engine changes (not to mention the whole licensing situation). It could change if Dust is developed on PS4 or other next gen consoles in the future (or even PC) but for now we'll just have to make do. |

Unreal engine 3 is great. If you want to make games with it too, You should follow my video tutorials I'm making in a few months. It's graphics are limiting only by the platform you are putting the game on. Remember dust has a terrible texture loading issue that makes it look like a ps2/ps1 game. It will be fixed. To test this fix stare at an ugly gray crate on any map. Make sure it looks super ugly. Then wait 2 minutes, don't look away.
TADA, high res textures suddenly appear!
Point is it's awesome and you should make games with it too. : ) |

the UE is a one of best engine but it's not appropriate for this kind of game on this console, now the ask is, why CCP choose this engine? they don't know the issues on ps3? |

The way Unreal Engine handles textures is one of the worst aspect about it, simply because of the pop-in. No point of having hi res textures if you can't even see them most of the time.
And this texture loading problem isn't exclusive to Dust either. |

borderlands does same texture load on ps3. I could be more suitable to link to EvE for some reason. They were using their own engine, but ran into problems. |

Dust is not going ti be 'developed' for ps4 as its basically going to be a direct transfer. (Buy ps4, download dust client, input details, pick up from where you left off on ps3) They are probably aware that unreal 3 doesn't perform to its maximum potential on ps3 due to the fact ps4 will be out within two years, so when ps4 is released......unreal 3 will run max performance. They planned ahead is all, very smart thinking on ccp's part I say. |

There was one time I play one game in Dust that there were no problems like lag or frame-rate issues. It made my Militia Gun easy to use. And my movement was very smooth. I believe this happened when they released the Codex patch. Then issues came in for me when they did the hot-fix. |

Either way, it's to late in the process to switch to a new engine at this point, but as a MMO type game, it's possible in future iterations but won't be for quite some time.
My guess is that they are waiting for Unreal Engine 4 and the next gen system. Right now, they are making the content, the network code and systems that will make Eve and Dust talk together ... They've already said that Dust 514 has a 5 year plan, and that would with current rumors, surpass the PS3's life cycle as it stands
Switching to UE4 would require work, but much less then switching to a completely different engine ... and with the known ... performance issues that UE3 has with the PS3, I'm sure Epic has gone to a lot of work to make the engine much more flexible towards the hardware it's running on (I think I remember reading somewhere that it'll also be usable for smartphone game development).
So currently ... get Dust 514 off the ground, get the gameplay and systems to simply work. Add content, in directions such as new game modes and non-tempered planets in the future.
Once PS4 comes along, the transition will be gradual, but we'll see more weapon models, ship models, more vehicle in general and much bigger maps with diverse landscapes as well as more people per map, etc.
That's my ... prediction ... |

I've always hated the Unreal engine, there was just too many incredibly bad games made with it in early PS3 years that tarnished and made the console look bad in comparison to the 360. It used to be a tell that the game was garbage (if it was on PS3).
They would have done good to use something like the Havok engine, which is proven to work extremely well on the PS3. The Unreal engine just doesn't seem to play well with the PS3 architecture. My guess is that before Sony bought the exclusivity, the 360 was the main focus and thus the Unreal engine would have performed admirably, while us PS3 users would have gotten the shaft, as like the olden days...

Consoles in general wasn't a main focus back then ... it was a goal, but not the focus. PC gaming is still relevant, but now a days, console gaming is larger, that's why I'm sure Epic will be working much more closely with Sony, Microsoft, etc to make UE4 work as best as possible |

True, mass effect is one of my favorite games and I was happy they using the same engine. The people who complain are the pc fanboys. I understand why they like the pc and it's great but they like little girls complaining about graphics all day. I JUST WANT A GREAT GAME. |

Unreal Engine has brought some good games.
1. Batman Arkham Asylum 2. Bullet Storm 3. Section 8 Prejudice 4. Gears of War 5. Mortal Kombat 9 6. Bioshock Infinite
The main problem of the game is not the graphics, it's the LAG that causing the frame rate to lag too. |
