Put in a "cycle squad leader" option in the chat menu. Any squad leader who doesn't input an order within a minute of the cycle button being hit is cycled out of the position and the next person in line is put in position. Put in a timer that pops up on the current leaders screen when the button is hit to signal to him that it's time to act or loose the position.
Also put in a "change order request" button, so we can signal to squad leaders that they need to change the target since it's either overrun and unobtainable or no longer needs to be defended, etc.
This will help alleviate a lot of the issues with squads who don't all have mics. I'm aware that a lot of you want everyone to have mics, but that's just not possible for some people. For instance most of the time I play it's night time and I have to be quiet since my wife and child are asleep, and some other people have similar issues. Also not everyone has spare money for a mic (many want to play this is because it's free and they have no money).
Additionally, allow squad leaders to place objectives on the pre-spawn map. This will allow squad leaders who keep getting spawn camped to still help the rest of the team, and allow them to set objectives at the beginning of the match before spawning in.
As for my initial issue here, the cycle squad leader option will let players who are tired of not having an active squad leader to have the chance to get one. |

I'll second this. I really just want some way for do nothing squad leaders to lose the position. |

I can see the cost issue, but I don't see why you can't speak in a low voice. It shouldn't be audible to the sleepers unless you are playing in the same room and then the flickering light from the screen would be a bigger issue.
Or am I mising something? |

I CAN use a mic, but I prefer not to. My wife is a really light sleeper, and anytime she hears people talking when she's asleep it wakes her up. I'd just as soon just not wake her up. There are plenty of other people who have similar issues with using mics, and as I said some who cannot afford them. I'm sure plenty of casual players who come to play will be micless as well. I think this would make things a lot easier. Also, for squads who have one or two people without misc it would make interacting with them a bit easier than having them type messages. They can just signal the squad leader with a "change order request" instead, and for groups who have friends who are micless they can work out what they mean by it before a match to function better as a team. |

I should have added that I do support the idea for public matches.
I would go a bit further and notify the squad leader of his status at he start of the match. Quite often I am dropped right into a game without a chance to figure out who is the leader of my squad, and sometimes it's myself.
One more reason a person might be mic-less is a drained battery. |

There should be some sort of tutorial at the beginning that explains how to use squad commands, and the first couple times you're the squad leader, it notifies you. |

I really like this idea. What if pressing R2 R3 as a non squad leader initiates a "requesting orders" input that functions as you said. If there are no orders you can request them. If the squad leader doesn't set new orders after a certain time, the first person to request orders gets to take on that responsibility. |

I like the request order part. But giving orders as it is right now is difficult and you have to consider that your squadleader might get killed while giving orders (that happened to me a lot).
But I know there are many SL that give never orders :/. |

How about a option to not be placed in leader role, it's annoying to find out your squad leader halfway through match.
Tutorial could be played when turning on squad leader availability, so anybody that could be squad leader will have seen tutorial. |

CCP would have to start to highlight the fact that you are squad leader. I put out orders when I am squad leader, but often enough I don't know I am (I don't take the time to set up squads). I have to try to set an order to know that.
And I agree that there should be a "requesting order", but it should not initiate a squad leader change. This is not a democracy. Dust is designed to manage your squads before games (it is not very good yet, but that is the plan). At best I think you should be able to drop out of a squad and request admission to another squad (either random or specific), or start your own squad as leader. And leaders should have the option of leaving their squad open (so anybody who asks, or a random assignment, can join), or not. |

I would just love to see a system similar to giving orders but for things like: "need a nanohive" or "help over here" That way people in your squad can put them up and then your squad gets a few bonus points for completing it. Similar to a squad order. |

I like:
1. Notification that you are a Squad Leader (SL). Easily done while the spawn timer counts you in. 2. A load screen that mentions the basics of squad leader commands. 3. Out of match tutorial with more info. 4. Villanor's idea of some standard non-verbal emote options like you see in Battlefield. 5. Some indication if players have voice channels muted or not. When I have an inactive SL, I try to voice them and politely walk them through giving a SL order, but they hardly ever do anything in response. Not sure if they have voice muted or if they are just ignoring me. Would be nice to know if I should waste the breath on it or not.
I don't as much like: 1. Anything that removes or cycles the SL. Games where leaders are vote kicked - the mechanic seems to end up spamming the game and doing more to ruin the game than help it. People can jump to a different squad or start their own if they don't like their current, inactive SL.
The current build has so much lag during the pre-battle war barge that it's hard to accomplish any squadding up there as the game design seems to intend. Presumably that will get refined and become easier in later builds. |

Since this is a strong squad based (if you want to win) game, i think CCP will soon add these functionality in it - in my opinion. |

There really should be a notification in the beginning of the battle informing the squad leader that he or she is indeed the squad leader, as well as a quick message on how to bring up and use the squad command wheel. |

Good ideas all, well most. Some sort of notification would be helpful.
Sometimes you start a match as the only one in squad, get busy and forget about looking every few minutes to see if you have new squad members. Other times the squad leader gives command to someone else, and there is no notification of the change.
Villanor's idea is especially good, though I might add another to say "Awaiting squad leader command" if there's no better way to notify someone that they have just been assigned. Hopefully that will at least cue people to look and see if they have the hot potato. |

Right now I am usually parted from my squad members and none of us care because there's nothing special about being a squad member. I do team work and mob around with other teammates but whether they are from my squad is irrelevant. I'd like to see bonuses that promote squad work. For example: A downed squad mate gets revived. The reviver would get a 10% bonus for helping the squad mate. Same goes for nanohives and what-nots. Members of a squad only vehicle (a vehicle loaded only by members of one squad) get a 10% bonus to the WP they receive in duration. Squad members would also recieve a bonus to the equipment. A nano-hive gives a fellow squad member more ammunition per pulse and a repair tool works faster on a squad member, etc. To tie this in with squad leaders, an order given by the squad leaders that is completed gives everyone extra WP, thus promoting squad leaders to be active. |

i was thinking it'd be great to have more of a bonus to support your squad regardless of orders.
one thing i'd like to see is Squad Kill Assist for 30 points, and a Squad Guard where if you kill someone who is damaging a squaddie you get a bonus. there doesnt need to be much of a bonus, just enough to give people the idea that it's a good thing to team up with your squad. |

As Squad Leader, you can assign another player in your squad as Squad Leader.
As Squad Leader, you should be given notification that you're Squad Leader.
As NON-Squad Leader, you should be able to REQUEST LEADER POSITION through the Squad menu, and a highlight will appear for the Squad leader to check the Squad channel. Other squad members will be given no notification of this, but the Squad Leader will see an icon next to the player requesting the position, and when opening the menu for that player, will have "Promote Squad Leader" as the first option in the list.
This would encourage people who DON'T WANT TO BE LEADER to pass the job on to someone else. It would also encourage people who DO want the job to actively request it. It would also draw more attention to "hey, you're a squad leader. LEAD your squad!" |

+1 I like these, but I still think there should be a way to oust inactive squad leaders from power, though there should be a warning, a timer, and time for the squad leader to start setting commands to keep his position. |

True, i guess it would be no different than it is now with my squad wondering what the bleep is he doing up on that hill? However, I do like the idea and would probably help matches alot. |
