Since the new update I can only play DUST in 720P. On the last build I was able to play in 1080P. What happened? CCP, did you take out the 1080P support now. Is the game going to only support up to 720P now? If so, why when the other builds were 1080P? |

Were the other builds 1080p? They wouldn't have been native 1920x1080. It would have been upscaled. It's always been 720p here, too. |

It was only a faked 1080p, really just 720 (likely a LOT lower) but upscaled.
Some PS3 games do this, some don't. I prefer it when they don't, and play in their native resolution. I hate when the game tries to upscale to 1080 and it ends up being all blurry because my settings are set for 1080 (even though game is really 720 or less). |

Okay guys, read my reply on this post and it will all make sense. The game was made to play in 1080P. I promise you it was. This will answer all of your questions. My post was the last post on page 1 last time I checked. https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=38491&find=unread
The question I want answered is where did my 1080P go CCP? What happened? Now I can only play in 720P or 480P. When last build I was able to play in 1080P and all the other builds before it. |

P.S. What I am talking about has nothing to do with upscaling.
I also have Madden 13. It supports 1080P. When I first got the game though it only played in 720P and I couldn't figure this out. That is how I found out about the little adjustment to your display settings on your PS3 that you need to do. |

Yes sir most likely. If you look at your display settings I'm willing to bet you that you have 720P unchecked.....or your tv doesnt support 720P, which I'm sure it does. Go into your display settings and check 720P and you can play in 720P right now.
But, I want 1080P back. The graphics were so much more clearer and all around better. |

Yes sir it was. I promise. Upscaling was only intened for video I believe not games. If what you are saying is true then that means Madden 13 was only meant for 720P and if that's the case, why does it say it supports 1080P on the back? |

No sir. There is a problem with the Playstation. If you have a game and a tv that support 1080P, I promise you, the game will play in 1080P. Just google this issue and you all will find out the information that I did.
You have to set you display settings up and select custom, then un check everything except for 1080P and 480P. And if the game says it's 1080P supported, then the game will play in 1080P. The downside to this is, that if the game does not support 1080P, then it will play in 480P. So, you have to go back into your display settings and select 720P.
For some reason the playstation has a bug (flaw), that on most games that support 1080P, will only play up too 720P if your display settings are set to automatic and all formats are selected. I don't know why.
But, trust me everyone, I have tested this on multiple games and I have seen and noticed the differences. |

You can't have "1080p back" since it wouldn't have been anywhere near 1920x1080. It would have been upscaled. It says 1080p on the back of the box for every 360 game because it supports it through upscaling.

the PS3 handles Gran Turismo 5 at 1080p and full 60fps... ok, so it took Polyphony Digital several years to make it work, but it shows that it can be done.
imho though, resolution does not equate to graphical fidelity; the human eye can only resolve so much detail, and only in the center of the field of view. |

GT 5 is upscaled 1080p. Sure, it tries to do native 1080p, but let's the PS3 downgrade to lower resolutions and then upscale it to 1080p very often. 1080p will only be viable without the automatic upscaling in the next generation consoles. |

Hmmmm. I think we need some clarification from sony on this one. IMO, upscaling has nothing to do with what the product(game) says it can support. If it only says 720P then it can only do 720P natively. But if it says 1080P then it can do 1080P natively. If I am correct, I believe that the PS3 doesn't upscale games only video(movies). I will test this when I get home with Madden 13 and GT5. All I am going to do is turn of my upscaling, which it might already be off, and then only have 1080P and 480P enabled in my display settings and which one the game plays in.
I really do believe that the playstation does not upscale anything to 1080P(BluRay) quality. If it upscales it only upscales to 1080i quality. I could be wrong but maybe this is a discussion for Sony.
I will post back tonight with my test results. |

no, native means thats what the game was made in. a few games can upscale to 1080p but it will look worse. i try to let my games run at their native resolution as to get the best visual fidelity out of them.
real games cannot run full 1080p on the ps3, it just can't handle it. Truth, idc what any of you say.
the only games that run Native 1080p are PSN games and that is only some of them.
everything else is 720p or less, such as MGS4 and BF3 which apparently are 576p which is a Europe thing, its equivalent to our 480p
there is nothing wrong here, the game is 720p |

"1080p" in GT5 is 1280x1080 and they upscale the horizontal frame. Most games that claim to be "1080" are 1080 vertical lines and the horizontal frame is a lot less than 1920. |

If it says "1080" on the back is means it supports it through upscaling. On 360 they upscale the native 720 frame. On PS3 can't upscale in the same way the 360 does. It only upscales the horizontal frame. GT5 is 1280x1080 and they upscale the horizontal frame. Wipeout HD has a dynamic framebuffer. It has 1080 vertical lines of resolution and the horizontal frame adjusts to keep the frame rate at 60FPS. It goes between 1280, 1440, 1600, 1645 and 1728. Upscaling has everything to do with it. Same with Shadow of the Colossus. That game on PS3 is 960x1080 and they do a massive upscale of the horizontal frame.
The PS3 upscales everything. Not in the same way as the 360, though. Which I've already stated. They gimped the upscaler in the PS3, for some reason. Blu-ray quality has more to do with resolution, too. |

MGS4 is 1024x768 and Battlefield 3 is 1280x704. I also can't find any other external evidence suggesting Dust 514 was anything more than 720p. Hard to find it considering the NDA., though.

No PS3 game created to date is native 1080p (except for maybe a few PSN games that are not that graphically intense). And that means every PS3 game has to be upscaled from their native resolution, 720p or less, to output at 1080p.
Just because your TV says 1080p, doesn't mean the game is a native 1080p resolution, it just means the PS3 is upscaling to match your TV's/PS3's output resolution settings.
There is a few different situations where upscaling occurs.
1. The PS3 upscales the game from 720p and outputs at 1080p, your TV will tell you it has 1080p input resolution. 2. The PS3 outputs at 720p and your TV does the upscaling, your TV will say it is a 720p resolution, but in fact it has to upscale to the TV's native resolution in order to fill the screen. So it actually still is a 1080p upscale resolution.
Both scenarios will likely result in a slightly blurrier picture than if you were to play the game on a native 720p HDTV and a native 720p game, it just depends on what you have better faith in upscaling, your TV, or the PS3.

Okay guys,
I actually contacted Sony and this is what they said. It appears that we were all right in a sense. PS3 games are NOT upconverted. But, at the same time, if a game is advertised 1080P, that doesn't neccassariy mean that it was made for native 1080P but instead 720P. So, the way I understand it, if you start a game and it says 1080P on the box and you can play in 1080P, then it is native 1080P. So, I think this is a very interesting topic. I'd be curious to see what the game manufacturers say.
://////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Thank you for contacting PlayStation-« Technical Support. My name is Ayla, and I will be assisting you today. I understand how frustrating it is when a game is advertised 1080p and it only plays in 720p.
Unfortunately, the upscale option is for the PlayStation-«One games and the PlayStation-«2 games only, the PlayStation-«3 games do not us the upscale option. The game publisher determines the resolution for the game and what the output for the game is.
The publisher may advertise that the game is displayed in 1080p due to the high definition cut scenes in the game. In most cases, the actual game is only designed to play in 720p. If you would like more information regarding this topic I would advise contacting the individual publishers of each game.
Thank you so much, for not only your time and patience in this matter, but for also giving me the opportunity to assist you today. Kori, you also may receive a brief survey in your e-mail about the customer service I was able to provide you today. When you do receive the survey, please let me and my supervisor know how satisfied you are with my personal response.
Sincerely, Ayla B. PlayStation-« Technical Support 1-800-345-SONY (7669) www.us.playstation.com

If it says it is "1080p" on the back of the back it isn't native 1080p. It won't be running at 1920x1080. At most it will be 1280x1080. Very, very, very rarely will a game actually run native 1920x1080p. The only examples I can think of are some sports games, the PS3 version of ICO and Super Stardust HD after the 3D update.
My guess it was a bug in the code. Since you seem to be one of the few people who experienced it. |

PlayStation-« Technical Support 1-800-345-SONY (7669) www.us.playstation.com://///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// So, back to my original question. I was able to play DUST in a 1080P format and now I cannot. So, WTF? What did you change CCP?... I mean that in a very nice way of course. Lol.
I am pretty sure this rep misunderstood your question. She was referring to the upscale option in the XMB for PS1 and PS2 games, not the upscale we are referring to.
Look, PS3 games do get upscaled, they absolutely have to unless they are running an EXACT native output of 1280x720, or 1920x1080.
Think about that one for a second, MW2 (and I believe MW3 as well) run native at 600p. Well, most HDTV's out there cannot run a resolution of 600p, if you tried it would likely say "Unsupported resolution" or something to that extent. It's just like your computer monitor, there is only a handful of resolutions that work with it. Well, in order for games not running a perfect native resolution of 1280x720 or 1920x1080, they HAVE to be upscaled to work with our TV's, and the PS3 does this.
You yourself have proven my point, as you said you were once able to play at 1080p, even though the devs have told us the game is NOT 1080p. This occurred because the PS3 upscaled the lower native resolution of the game to 1080p, in fact you force upscaled it by un-selecting 720p. This doesn't magically make the game native 1080p, it essentially just blows up the picture to fit a larger resolution frame.
Some games do this automatically, some forbid it, and others, like Dusts previous build, allowed it but only if the user forced it.
DENT Farrow wrote:Actually I used to be able to run it in 1080p and now it's stuck at 720p which just gives the wrong aspect ratio on my tv :(
You probably need to adjust your screen fitting settings. Setting it to "wide screen", "16:9", or "wide fit" may stretch it weirdly, if you have a just-scan option, or a unscaled option, that would likely fix the aspect ratio problem.

This is what I would like to know. Why can I not "Force" it anymore. Regardless of weather is was native or not, the game still looked much better when I "Forced" it. |

That I am not sure about, has to do with whatever the devs did with this build. Some games you can force it, some you can't. It's up to the devs to allow that option or not.
Not sure why they would deny it, but I am not a game developer so I don't know all the potential consequences. |

Nope played with all of the screen settings (ingame and ps3) and it's still squished : / |

I was talking about the settings directly on your TV.

You've not lost any options at all. Dust, like 90% of Unreal engine games on console, runs at 720p. Fact.
Just because your TV is telling you it's 1080p doesn't mean the game is. The game is being output at 720p on a 1080p display. That's it. My TV could be set to 1080p running PS2 games. That doesn't mean the entire game is being output with more pixels and polygons, it's purely the display setting your TV is at.
Very very few games get close to 1080p on PS3. Gt5 and Wipeout are two of the few I know of. Like most have said already it's generally reserved for PSN games as they don't tax the PS3 like triple A titles do.
I've not seen any triple A title running at 1080p tbh, there all 720p pretty much. If you can't tell just by looking at crappy textures and actually seeing polygons, then there's something wrong imo. Even things like Killzone are 720p with lots of things on there to make it look better than it actually is and that's one of the nicest looking games out there imo.
720p looks horrible in comparison to true 1080p, even upscaled. In fact, there is no comparison imo. |

Farrow has a point though. Although the image is upscaled either in the PS3 or in the TV, the quality of the scale may not be the same, and if the PS3 has a better upscale than the TV, then the request to let the PS3 do the upscale seems valid.
On the other hand, upscaling in the PS3 may eat resources which may have an impact on the game, and thats why it was disabled in the latest build. Only the devs know... |

I do understand what everyone is saying. But, a couple of things.
1. My TV does not upscale. It will only show what format is being pushed to it.
2. The sony rep. did say that PS3 games where not upscaled. The upscaling that the PS3 does is only for PS2 games and videos.
Regardless though, I used to be able to play DUST in 1080P, upscaled or not, my TV was saying 1080P and my picture quality was better.
After this last build, I cannot. That is all I would like to know is why cannot I not now? And why was I able too before? I'm am looking for a Dev's reply to this. What did you change and why did you change it.
One other thing to point out. If my PS3 or tv was upscaling it before, why is not now? Wouldn't it be the same now as it was then? |

There was a big graphic improvement in the last patch, as the post directly before you assumed, this was probably done intentionally by the dev to free up resource on your PS3 to allow teh game to run smoother. The PS3 is struggling to run DUST smooth at 720p with all the frame rate drops.graphics lag. I think this is the most likely reason. |
