Why make a game like BF or COD when they are already experts at it? Would CCP making this like COD or BF really make a difference on who plays it and who doesn't? If the game is just like COD or BF with the basics and rip out the MMO portion of it. The game will get flooded with maybe a small amount of console gamers who stick with it for a month or so and then leave because the makers of COD or BF came out with a new expansion or maps or something. CCP cannot afford to be playing the competition game with those companies. There is just no way. None. They can spend 300mil on a game and have no issues. CCP isn't the kind of company with 300mil to slap down on development. Their only game so far that is actually published is EvE.
We aren't asking for CoD or BF at all. We are just asking for the same polish and fun factor on the game. Make it unique! Of course.
Make the MMO part a great path down the rabbit hole. But basicly CoD and BF3 have solid gameplay, to emulate that and strap on a deep MMO is all the better. They are leaders for a reason.... |

That I could go with....I haven't played any of the newest since the first one. That one creeped me out with the smart AI. Them taking cover when shot at and then using tactics, calling for reinforcements and using everything in the book to try to kill me messed me up some. From my perspective there are so many variables in play that sometimes the meaning behind a given term gets clouded. If one talks about the movement or control during a 'run-n-gun' situation in game what is one actually describing? Is it UI, gameplay, balance, rpg mechanics... well really it could be any or more likely all of these things depending on what is being specifically referenced.
For example sniper scope tracking. If it's hard to effectively control your targeting when zoomed with a sniper rifle then what is the cause of that? Broken UI (i.e. a strait up client bug), hit detection/lag glitch (i.e. a connection/ping type issue), a gameplay issue (i.e. insufficient interface feedback, or the "camera trolly with gun effect"), balance (i.e. some other piece of gear/level of gear would improve effective tracking and thus it's functioning as intended), rpg mechanics (i.e. leveling the relevant skills will resolve the issue. It is functioning as intended in that those who specialize in that role will not suffer the same hindrances as those who do not).
If someone makes a simple/less detailed statement like "scope tracking is broken, fix it!" then the solution they are seeking, indeed their actual problem is not able to be clearly defined or effectively reacted to. (Note: In all fairness it can be difficult at times as a tester/player to know all the relevant details involved in an issue much less all of the possible sources/elements involved in an occurrence)
To bring all of this around to the general topics discussed in this thread (still employing the example above) there are some things that can and should be addressed and I doubt those things are in any real dispute (even if it's not always clear they're being referenced, or the scope of their effects). Example: If targeting is poor due to connection/lag or other related issues, that should be fixed and I don't think anyone will say "MOAR LAG PLZ". If targeting is poor because the UI is clumsy or cumbersome, again fixes/customization being opened up is a pretty straightforward win.
Gameplay issues are more gray, in that some players may not care about/be effected as notably by things like the "camera trolly" effect. Here too however I doubt there's much real opposition to bringing more grounding (as cited with games like Killzone etc) into Dust.
The contentious areas (and I think much feedback related to the above areas is mistakenly lumped in with this type here) are in the balance/rpg/"as intended" component of the game. Saying "let's improve dust by gutting the effect/value of skills" is simply not equal to "lets improved dust by squashing UI bugs or making the heft/feel of guns more solid and realistic". The latter benefits every player, the former caters to a specific style over the other. To put a fine point on it if one wants the UI, feel, latency, etc improved then it should be, however if one wants a game without relevant character skill progression, or a warfare game conducted within a persistent world where numbers/economics/politics etc. all play real roles having a meaningful impact on matches (i.e. player combat/fps skill alone is not what the game is balanced around) then we've moved into the territory of "perhaps another game would be better suited to you".
Summation, I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling CoD etc don't motivate me to play at this point, Dust does, however that doesn't mean there's nothing of value to be learned from more 'standard' FPS games, valuable lessons can be gained from games like Killzone or BF3 without attempting to clone them, compete head-to-head with them, or gut any of the RPG/MMO/Persistent complex world, aspects that make Dust unique and appealing.

Lazarus Solo wrote:Iron Wolf Saber wrote:Lazarus Solo wrote:My main complaint about the game is that the weakest link of this MMOFPS is actually the FPS part. The guns, how the guns control, fire, the hit detection. It needs serious work.
I'm used to how BF3 handled it and for me, that's perfect. The FPS part of DUST is far from perfect.
Becuase of this I spend most of my time either playing medic, flying or gunning. I'm a big fan of the drop ships, and that's where I usually have a lot of fun. Until they fix the FPS aspect though, I won't be having that much fun on the ground. please iterate further as you are only furthering my point. I've just told you. The only way I could add to that is to say the bullets or whatever is fired from my assault rifle seem to travel very slowly as I have to lead my targets by a stupidly large amount to hit them at 10 metres. That's another thing I would call an issue. But in general the shooting mechanics are just poor and it's very hard to get that across in writing. All I can tell you is that the shooting mechanics in BF3 are leaps and bounds ahead because they are smoother. Of course, the hit detection, frame rate drops and rubber banding are also major issues. Also, i've never tried it but i've seen an option for aim assist. They either need to scrap that completely or have separate aim assist and free aim servers like Max Payne 3 and Grand Theft Auto 4.
This all seems related to hit detection, Next build will re-adress it again with a new system thats adaptive. Well have to find out and see for ourselves and complain again if it doesnt fix it. |

xAckie wrote:@iron this forum is full of reasons why this game fails at FPS. And as people say we all get told to go back to (insert game) when mentioning something.
personally the big things for me are (assault class):
weapons should not become more powerful with Sp. remove the Sp +3% to weapons adn in proficiencies. let everyone have the same weapon at their allowed level. ( the increase in SP gain increases damage is just one of many crutches for bad players).
cut people's drop suits by 15%. I am in type 2 assault as are others and we are now all starting to do that stupid dance in a circle change to weapon 2 to finish someone off.
I know this is an RPG but the infantry FPS has to work and the two above changes wont change skiling for different classes wont be affected. The game was fun when everyone was in militia gear. And we will all end up blob/ zerging as squads - whcih is just crap gameplay
2x SP gain for vehicles. Infantry lose out. is this vehicle warfare or an FPS?: if SP for shields, electronics, mechanics, repair etc. can be used for tanks/ vehicles and dropsuits then assault needs to be given sp for AV. At the moment the vehicle class are getting a free ride with SP gain. They can use their SP for their toon and their vehicle. This lack of foresight from CCP says to me that they dont have a first hand feel for FPSs. Nor did they seem to understand the lack of AV counters for tanks
turn sensitivity is too slow. I cant make it higher because aim down the sights is so bad that if i slightly touch the stick I go miles off target. Controls are not smooth. Controls seem to be an after thought.
I wont go on. But minor changes like the above may bring back some element of fun into the game where skill can still beat SP. It is about balancing the games RPG SP > skill element better. (please dont mention null etc. I know about it)
overall: I like the potential and vision of the game. problem is it mainly is potential.
Fortunately for the SP = Damage its following though the RPG roots in the universe while it may not seem alot to you it may be more signifcant if a dust player tries eve online. However recently they're discussing reducing sp = damage becuase of lower suit hp.
Suit HP is already cut down by alot. there hasnt been a single suit fielded I couldnt down with a full milita AR mag.
I can still murder protos with milita ARs' they're not that invincble since the hp nerf to suits which will be pernament, this will shift focust to the suit slots and equipment installed in those slots.
There is no SP multiplier for vehicle operations, just warpoint and fhield presence are the two variables.
Controls are being worked on and constantly interated.

Gunplay all weapons feel weightless they do not recoil much/at all, hit detection is still a major issue and only seems to work well at a medium range that not close enough for strafing to be effective and when you get too far hit detection goes out the window completely making maybe 1 out of 7 bullets hit which could be a accuracy thing but how to you tell if your not shooting accurately if the gun has no feel of recoil knocking the aim off target?, also id have to say that guns but ARs are not filling there role this could be due to one of 2 things first is the hard cap on the range of the weapon is far too short and there appears to be heavy damage fall off, the other cause would be the selection of ARs could be incomplete 2 types we are missing off the top of my head should have far more ability to put damage on target at range they are projectile and rail/guass ARs,
Movement feels too much like a camera floating around with a gun unfortunately 2 games that i can think of that i can think of that made the players feel like actual people and not just a gun strapped to a trolly as i heard someone say once was Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Killzone series iam sorry to say i dont know the technical terms for what it is those games did but they made the game feel much more solid, i think one thing that should be done to improve movement system would be to slow down straffing speed and backward movement so it is about 25 to 30% slower than foward movement this would also help hit detection in most straight up fights.
Game is biased to run and gun or playing for the kill, the war points for killing far exceeds that of any other role in the game if this does not change i have to ask what was the point of putting in logi and scout suits if the only reasonable way for them to be competitive on leader boards, in matches and in general is to go for the kills sure thats what assault class should do but scouts primary role should be recon and providing intelligence on enemy positions which they can do but are not rewarded for it because its done passively i would suggest making spotting enemies a manual thing with maybe a passive module for it also but for spotting the scouts should be given reward for doing so as they are playing a vital role on the battlefield, logis are also far under valued for there primary role of keeping people on the battlefield repping people provides very little point and provides points very inconsistently, the nano hive are give good xp but could be made better to make the logi want to put the thing down rather than as it is now i could or i could shoot that guy and make more isk,xp or what ever. I also think people should get passive xp for deffending objectives rather than running out for kills getting killed and ultimitly losing the objective mabye there should be a bonus to this for heavies because that is there role they are the walking turrets that are there to defend objectives.
Iam sorry if i was a bit vague with some of the feed back but this is one of the first betas ive been in and probably the first real one with exception of mabye the AC ones
Also i hate this idea of go back to (insert popular game here) crap why if i preffer the way battlefield does something would i go back to it if i think that this game has more potential than it if it does it right, like isnt that why most of us are here thats why iam here to try and help ccp make dust all it can be and all some people want to do is make a game for them that will just fill there little niche, why would DUST avoid doing something like COD or like battlefield if it would make it a better game in prossec and possibly make DUST better than battlefield at what it does best?
Weapon mass and feel are being addressed by the animators.
FPS Camera Bobbing is noted and will ask the devs on this issue. along with a few other FP issues involving the camera as well.
Warpoints are getting balanced out I been told last time I talked witht he developers they're upping rewards for objectives and assest kills (vehicles/turrets/facilities) However wanting more WP for more tihngs I can see being asked added this question as well and will interate it a bit.

Yeah this makes this sort of feed back much more difficult to pin down. however any sort of feedback about something 'lacking' is better than no feedback about something that is currently dull. Personally, the only thing that feels off to me is mainly anal retentive little things, like how the Scrambler pistol has recoil when its supposed to be a laser weapon, and how, as in pretty much every other game, the weapon animation for sprinting follows your camera view, making it seem like you're tilting your pitching up and down on your entire torso as you run.
I do however put a lot of focus into audio, and the current sound effects for weapons just don't make them sound very powerful. Its not all in the bass, but also in the modulation throughout the firing cycle. I can distinctly remember Robt McLees describing a playtest of Halo 3 where he redid the audio on the Assault Rifle, resulting in concerns that his "new design" was OP compared to the other weapons, despite the fact that the only thing he changed was the audio.
I'm willing to bet that part of this nebulous "feel" of the weapons comes from the way they sound as you fire them.
EDIT: Actually, I just read the description of the Scrambler Pistol again, and apparently it's a plasma weapon, just laser ignited. I'm personally hoping that the actual laser rifles will have no recoil and be hitscan, but that they'll have low damage per shot with a multiplier that stacks with the more shots you land on the target in rapid succession.
Btw, for those of you who aren't in EVE. Laser Rifle ELM-7 Laser Rifle Viziam Laser Rifle
These three are already in the market on Singularity. Here's hoping for next build! |

Now as for some constructive criticism:
I have been noticing slight discrepancies in the statistics that have been posted for the equipment in the market. Specifically this comes to mind the GEK-83 'Killswitch" AR. Why would I purchase a AUR weapon if it has higher CPU and PG usage but the same damage output as the Blindfire. The only major difference is the accuracy rating, which IMHO is not worth the additional cost in either AUR or ISK (that is to say it is or was an ISK weapon).
Another issue I have is this ludicrously heavy handed nerfing of the upper tier suits. WHY CCP? What were the driving reasons behind the idea and then implementation of this downscaling of the suits protection? Granted the suits do come with added slots and some additional PG & CPU. This nerfing will cause people to go through the cost benefit analysis of seeing whether or not it is worth buying the suit or spending a bit more and skilling up both K/D ratio and survivability with a Dropship or any other vehicle. This is the reason why so many people clan together and chose the tanks.
Now this brings me to the issue of the heavy nerfing of the range on the forge gun and the crippling nerf given to the breach weapons. The total elimination of the range on a weapon is absolutely crippling, especially when all the weapons seems to have a hard range and after that magical line nothing happens. Though I understand that this is a game that exists in a unique universe, but like in the Real World, once momentum is gained it takes a bit to bleed out.
EDIT: There will be more to come, I just need to gather my thoughts. |

These where asnwered previous in the dev irc thread
As for the aurum weapons no answer but this may explained why they where removed as with alot of aurum based gear.
Suit nerf was to shift focus from the suits to the modules it also lowers the disparity between low skill players and high skill players.
Forge range was getting increased significantly.
Rest will be addressed after Hit Detection working (current focus) drop rbs and other accuracy tricks will then be visited once bullets can hit targets reliably.
Either way keep up the feedback anything that wasnt covered Ill pack up and give it to the devs. |
