I play Eve online as a non-violent, not for profit miner. Is there anything for me in Dust?
Perhaps a specialist suit taylors shop or similar?
EDIT: UPDATE: I will be focussing on Logistics as a non-violent way to play this game.
I believe every game should have a way to partake without any violence.

You could pay people to not fight, perhaps? I'm sure you can set up a contract like that when the game is released. |

At the moment, we're only seeing combat.
I hope there's some form of non-combat role available in DUST, but I probably won't use that as a core focus even if it does exist. |

Well. PvE will be in dust. Against drones. Horde mode I think it was. If you don't want to shoot anything at all you're in the wrong game, man. This being an MMOFPS. S being the operative term here. For Shooter. |

I just noticed Logistics (I have been away for a while). I am going to be a master of Logistics! That's the opposite of killing.
Now this game needs ECM so more people like me can put a stop to all the killing. |

Please, please tell me you are joking..... It's a first person SHOOTER. Violence comes with the territory. If you don't want violence, you are in the wrong genre. Heck even in EVE you are most likely in some way aiding a war somewhere. |

If they do resource gathering they need to free explore maps which are much bigger (about x5) but anyone can get in or out of the map without getting a tag on the logs.
Have nodes you can go find, then call down an rdv to deploy a 'harvester' which auto harvests the node. which you must protect. If you fail to protect it somone can blow it up or hack it for htier own ends. |

to top it off the materials gathereed will not be for 'normal' tech 1 manufacturing possibly research items and have it work on security, high sec you can gank the guy but police will frown on it, low sec the police slap you with a fine. null sec, free game.
Then populate with hostile npcs from hostile life to not so friendly miltiary or paramiltiary groups. Lower the sec the more dagnerous they could be. |

If you noticed in the OP, they said they do mining, which is as non-violent as it gets.
On a related note, I'd like to see mining/manufacturing in the full game. |

The guy was saying you're "in some way aiding a war" not that you're personally fighting in one.
Which is totally irrelevant to the idea of non-combat roles anyway, and I'm still in favour of some non-combat positions.
Even a commander who acts within the combat sphere but outside of DIRECT combat (for the most part) is an example of this to an extent. |

I don't know what it is about battlefield logistics I find so attractive. It's just the whole "people shooting at me and I can't shoot back while I have to push forward and aid the team" thing I guess. I've always played logistics roles in team shooters, ARMA I always used to pilot the unarmed helicopters and planes. |

On the practical side, miners in EVE each mine hundreds if not thousands of cubic meters of ore every minute. An on the ground mining op would involve either massive installations or ridiculous teams. Of course you could be mining some material so rare that the smaller yield is worth it but at this point you have to account for this worth by giving it a use, since a player driven market won't touch it unless it's actually useful.
I like the idea of more than the standard shooting roles in this game (though not at the expense of the shooting game) but I think it would be better if they were combat supported archeology or salvage operations with dedicated personnel. In this way you would have a dedicated skill tree and, consequently, value to corps outside of your ability to shoot face. You would also have missions with interesting dynamics (get your squishy scientist to the objective before the opposition does for example) and could mix PvE and PvP (get your squishy scientist to the objective before the opposition does plus fight increasing waves of drones). This kind of game would offer interesting experiences and opportunities to work together with the opposing team up until the critical moment which would add suspense and another layer of tactical consideration to certain games, while offering a non-combat niche for those so inclined.
Or you could work for a dust corp by doing their admin. Everyone needs admin and you rarely have to shoot anyone. If you're not interested in fighting maintain a database or something. |

After playing Minecraft for a while I have decided there are gamers that would love to play DUST to go mine and stuff when they dont want to battle. I would love to see DUST players down in a mine.
If you add it and only 10% of the players do it, well then you get 10% having fun and helping supply resources for others. The more ways a person can play DUST the more people you will have playing it in the way that makes them have the most fun. |

True, I do mining as well, but what happens to that ore? It gets sold or refined and then could form weapons/ships used in war, and the money that she spends on equipment and new ships could also be then used to fund war. It's all connected.
EDIT: Didn't realise this had got a second page and that someone had already explained my link. My bad. Even still, this game is designed as a shooter, and has from the start been called an MMOFPS, and not something as free range as EVE. So I would doubt they'd put mining or manufacturing in. That's what EVE is for.
Also, from what I have read (A considerable time ago) There will be some form of commander role in the big conquest type game modes where corps fight for control of planets. Far as I could tell the person acting as commander would essentially be playing an RTS with us acting as the pieces. |

I have no problem with people playing the game however they like (as long as they're not ruining play for others), So since I haven't seen it mentioned yet:
Instead of mining, perhaps a scavenger/salvager option. Besides the obvious looting of bodies, you could also loot wreckage, or artifacts if there's a "ruins" type map. |
