Have you read the 514 Chronicle? It begins to introduce something called "Sleepers" which invented the technology used to create the mercenaries. The original implants were not actually produced by New Eden scientists, rather they were discovered and being tested. I suggest you read the chronicle, it really is quite interesting, a good read if I do say so myself.
Sleepers are not new and have been in the lore for years. You also see their left behind technology and fight their drones in wormhole space, which was added in the Apocrypha expansion.
They're not aliens, though--they're some long-lost human civilization.
Remember that there was a dark age for thousands of years after the EVE gate collapsed before society rebuilt itself and interstellar travel was rediscovered. Lots of obscure branches of humans could have sprung up and disappeared that no one today knows about.
Here's some basic info.
And yeah, I read that chronicle. I need to read the third novel Templar One, as I think it may related to DUST as well. They make references to the Templar program in the chronicle. |

Dust is not an Arcade FPS like another game I could mention but will, instead, leave nameless. Go back to WoW? Wait... That doesn't work here... |

Or something like that.

Well then, my lack of familiarity with EVE lore explains all that then. However, I am still going to point at this - " 'Blood-red skies, strange beings, and the number 514, often written in blood,' said Shakor." I want to know what the "strange beings" are, they could be sentient aliens, could they not? :) Unless there is other lore that can confirm otherwise, which would be disappointing. |

Who really knows? (well, the devs know, at least.) To the citizens of New Eden ancient history is myth and legend anyway.
Humanity has diverged somewhat in the thousands of years since the collapse of the wormhole that brought them here, the Jove, for example, have genengineered themselves so much that they look more like aliens (what ones are left, only pictures and art to go by, really) I do think the Sleepers are the last remnants of the original colonists of New Eden, myself.
Hmmm, you know, one of my first trips as a new player in EVE was to take a sightseeing trip to the EVE Gate (not much to look at beyond a sun-like collapsed wormhole and a really dangerous trip in)
One thought made me wonder then, and keeps me wondering now when I play.
What happened to the Earth and human race that our ancestors (as players in New Eden) left behind when they came through the EVE Gate and after the collapse and fall of that civilization, and will we ever see their descendants? |

On killstreaks: No, I dont particularly like the ideas of Killstreaks for this game. We have the tools on-planet ourselves, and can call in fire from above in certain situations - i don't really see a need for them.
I would be onboard for ISK or SP awards for achievements like 'hack x many enemy objects' or 'kill Y many vehicles' |

Given the joyous direction of EVE I imagine the Earth degenerated into rampant cannibalism.

Maybe they did, for a while.
And maybe they became the kind of empire who are such heartless bastiches that it makes the one in star wars look like girl scouts in comparison - and did not forget us.

I actually think that Earth Civilization continued to advanced and then they destroyed themselves and the wormholes people venture into in EVE actually connect to the Milky Way and the Sleepers are the last remnant of a once great civilization. I also think the sleepers are what lead to their destruction. But hey, I have no basis for that claim and I do not think the current lore supports my premise.
*shrugs*
