Voice communications at the moment are bugged as we all know, often players have cross communication with the opposing team.
That aside, I often hear people that have 'hot' microphones that continually broadcast noise from that individual players local environment (I have been an unintentional offender). Things like screaming kids, family members waffling on about their day, slightly delayed gameplay noises echoing back. This is normally from players forgetting that a mic was left on and other times it is intentionally used to grief. It is highly frustrating not being able to communicate with your own team, as one anti-social individual can cripple the co-ordination of more than a dozen team mates.
An individual mute option would be of great benefit please CCP. Combine that with somehow mapping a push-to-talk option, if not for controller users - then as an added benefit to Keyboard and mouse users.
Coming from EVE on PC and using quality voice comms solutions like Ventrilo, Teamspeak and other similar solutions. As it stands now, we are having to listen to someone chewing their dinner and heavy breathing into a mic on the PS3. I have left matches due to a poor experience with voice comms being abused.
How has everyone elses experiences been with voice comms in Dust 514 so far?

I actually find all these comms bloopers amusing. Nothing like some comic releif after grinding a beta for a few hours. I'm still waiting to play a match with BAD FURRY. I want to actually hear his lousy music everyone's complaining about. |

With controller mapping (which is coming SOONGäó), an optional PTT would be nice - NOT forced though. Default it to off (and fix the fact that voice comms default to off, that's stupid), and have no default PTT button, so you have to remap the controller and put it where you want.
And a mute function for individual players is a must-have. Also, giving us a notification of who's talking when mics are active would be nice - and I mean an in-game pop-up over their heads. |

Discuss I think that control customization should allow non-invasive push-to-talk regardless of controller. Say, have an actionmapper instead of just a keymapper, so that you can set L3 as crouch and ^+L3 as sprint. That would free up the circle button to be used for PTT, so that you could hit that button while moving, instead of having to use the < d-pad button or something. Also, possibly have as a function that the 6-man squad has open comms to each other, but the squad commander can PTT to talk on a "command" channel that only he, the other squad commanders, and the overall commander can access. That way a small group is able to share information about their surroundings in real time without having to push any buttons, while still keeping down the quantity of chatter that would otherwise result from dozens of players talking in the same channel. |

Good points Mobius, I was going to suggest the cascading voice comms idea myself, but I thought about it and changed my view point on the subject - mainly because I do like the fact that as a squad member in squad A, I can hear Sqaudmember in Sqaud B warning about an incoming tank on Objective C.
Hearing the full range of intel without it needing to be double handled by squad leaders and the commander is more efficient. Unfortunately it relies on people not abusing the team-wide voice comms.

I am happy with my TurtleBeach PX11, my cheap logitech USB headset i use on my PC was not PS3 compatible.

I really like the seperated volume for In-game sounds, and voice comms. If someone is abusing comms you can turn voice comms right off. Also has a mic mute switch. Microphone quality is excellent, but will pick up background noise fairly easily.
Once CCP Frame (and team) pwns that PTT feature though, mic over-sensitivity will be a thing of the past \o/ |

I encourage different channels. Friends and squads can then chat without bothering any others. Not to beat a dead horse...MAG had it right with squad leaders being able to channel chat with each other and their superiors. |

I agree with this.
Also, allowing the seperate Squads talk to each other, orders from different leaders will get mixed up. Even with way points and markers.
Starting it out as tiers like that, and then, allow for squad leader to have an option to pair comms with the squad that the higher commander is ordering to support you.
Adding then some MCC options to over ride all comms (shut out to other team Squads comms if in them)
something like that. Command needs to be able to talk over others. So even if someone plays loud music, orders can be heard. |

A mute option is a must. There needs to be icons over the heads of whoever is talking, and indicators with names in the side of the HUD to show who is talking. There should be more chat options, like a squad only option which would be default in 48+ player games where there could be like 23 other people talking at once, and a leaders only voice chat option for discussing strategy with the commander and other squad leaders. |

At which point we can start genuinely testing this game.

Greetings,
CCP Frame, if you are still reading this, I think I might have a lead on part of the voice comms issue. I was in a battle on Friday evening where someone had mentioned that when they get cross team comms, they are usually only able to hear / talk to their corp mates on the other team. I thought it was a nice theory and set out to prove / disprove it.
What I found was that if I went to the team list during battle initialization (War Barge scene) and changed from my team to my corp in the text window, I would hear my corp mates during the battle. This did not happen every time, but it did happen 3 out of the 4 times I tried it. I also tried changing to just my squad and in 2 other battles I could hear only some of my teammates, which I suspect were my squad mates (These were really disconcerting when I hear a "squad mate" replying to a question I never heard.)
It may have just been coincidence, but it also might be something to look into. |

dirty, angry , annoying, whispering, dogs, familys, girlfriends , tv , music, enemy.
the above is mostly what i hear, sometimes i get a good game, the coms is clear but quiet (seperate ingame/voice control). not knowing who is talking is hard, unlike vent/ts you have had time to get to know your fellow corp mates,. in dust your just chucked in with a bunch of dudes, sometimes one or two have an FC idea and take up the role, others just go gungho ( me for one), maybe following commands if someone takes up as FC ( no mic otherwise would FC my own squads)
to me dust coms is just a port of eve voice but very cut down. it needs a more wider option choice, corp chat invite / alliance chat invite ( voice and text, maybe public chat chanels with EV enabled (EV= eve voice), hell maybe sony can get of the sofa and make us a sony PS3 vent/ts like coms add on to the consoles.
the most annoying is when you hear shots wizzing past what seams your head and is infact feedback from an open mic |

^^ This. If MAG did anyting right, it was VC. And when they added proximity chat, it made it just that much more better. And for those domination games (128 vs 128), it was just brilliant. For anyone who doesn't know here's how it worked:
There were various chat channels and depending on you position, depended on who you could chat with (Imagine trying to distinguish 128 voices all at once)
1. Lobby chat: Chat channel for everyone waiting for game to start / queue up.
2. Squad-Chat: Standard channel during a match, everyone gets this. They can talk and hear the 8-man team they are on.
3. Platoon-Chat: Squad Leaders and the Platoon Leader have access to this. Only Squad leaders and Platoon Leaders can be heard on and use this channel (in the same platoon). Thing is, you can still hear your own Squad-Chat (they can't hear you though).
4. Company Chat: Platoon Leaders and OIC have access to this. Here they can speak with other Platoon Leaders or the OIC. You still hear everything in 1 and 2, they just can't hear you.
5. Platoon Broadcast: Platoon Leaders only. EVERYONE in your platoon will hear you (one-way communication). Used when PL want's to address everyone in their Platoon (4 Squads).
6. Company Broadcast: OIC (Officer-in-charge - 1 per 128 team) only. Used to address EVERYONE on your side of the battle (128 people broadcast).
7. Proximity: If you were within xx-meters of other person (ally or foe), you could here them. It was funny hearing your enemy calling out strategies, not knowing you were right there listning to them, only to take-em-out and then hear them throw a rage-fit trying to figure out how you knew were they were and what they were doing.
There were also chat indicators to tell you who was talking, there were mute options, PTT, etc... just made VC great. In the larger battles (i.e. Domination 128 vs 128) it made communication so much easier and siimpler. As well, you didn't have all the chatter to try and sort through. Made strategy making that much better as well. It also kept most of the "useless" chatter out of the convo.
I know this isn't MAG, but take a page from their book for sure. |

Something that works like MAG would be good, however i would want to add one thing for ultimate control. As the MCC (or platoon leader) to link 2 squads together in VC. Or to link just 2-4 squad leaders together, Also as the ultimate to allow a com link to just one other person.
Proxy chat was always fun and amusing and sometimes even useful, however it is slightly unnecessary, that being said i would LOVE to have it in game.
Now there was a good idea said, i cant quote it now but the idea to have the enemy MCC to be able to put out a broadcast to the enemy to be awesome. Whether it be intimidation or any of the sort i think that should be there, as that is something that could be realistically (in the EVE Dust world) done. Of course this should also be able to be mutable to the enemy team to prevent just annoying spamming. |

The standard Sony PS3 headset lets you adjust volume settings so that other players are muted or set quiter then special effects and vice versa. Granted it doesn't discriminate between players, but it is an option if you don't mind avoiding comms for a single match after it starts. |

This.
I would like a notification similar to the "new squad order" notification, this way we don' t have to be near the person talking to see who is talking. But we should still see if the person next to us is talking as well. |

Examples we need the option to filter which channels show up and when it would be nice if the icons flashed multiple times to get ur attention
Also something's that would be nice is being able to designate which channels each member has access to Example squad leaders and battlefield commander need a channel, each squad needs a channel, battlefield commander needs to have the ability to connect to individual squad leaders at a moments notice, also need tactical channels so that when the need arises separate squads can coordinate their actions And the last thing i can think of is an easy way to switch comm channels
Now I'm sure there are things im either forgetting or things I've not thought of but there is my 2 isk |

I d like to see a chat channel just for squad leaders too but they should be able to talk always with others in in this channel. The intern squad communication is restricted for them too. If they talk normally they chat in the leader channel if they talk with a pressed dial button they talk to their squad for a limited time. The idea of hearing enemies within a certain range seems good but this should be as skill. There should be chat indicators too: a green bar with the name of the guy(s) who talk for squad members, a blue bar with the names for squad leader(s) and a red bar without a name for intercepted orders from enemies. Messages from the text chat should also be shown for a few seconds. |

Nah, that opens the floodgates for any two bit griefer to abuse that by playing caramel dansen if said MCC can access the enemy's comms. It's funny but not when you are on the wrong end of it. ^_^
Though if it could truly be muted then obviously that would help solve said problem. |
