Okay, so I started playing this game yesterday and I've learned most of it's mechanics. I spent multiple hours reading guides on this forum.
My first few matches in "battle academy" were pretty good. I ended my first match with 16 kills and 2 deaths.
When I noticed it was time to go in a real battle outside of "battle academy", I knew I was going to have trouble if I didn't join a squad from what I've read. So I found myself a nice squad of four people including myself and the leader decided that we would go in a domination match. I decided to use my starter dropping suits to make sure I didn't lose anything if things went south.
The good thing is that we won the match. The bad thing is that I felt like I lost.
My "kdr" had reversed... I ended the match with 2 kills and 16 deaths and only got 500 warpoints.
I'm just... confused. I don't even know what went wrong. Trying to stay with my squad only made me die by some people on top of buildings... Trying to flank made me get rolled over by 3 heavily armored vehicles... Trying to hack the objective got me killed by people with advanced weapons and protos. Trying to stick to cover only made my agony last longer.
The only thing I could do most of the match was dropping spawn beacons near the objective for my teammates and I don't even know if it helped them at all !
I expected things to be hard, but not impossible !
The only thing I could "improve" is my gear, but I don't want to risk wasting cash on weapons or suits I won't even have time to try out before dying.
As I've already said, I'm very confused on what to do next... I like how the game works so much that I'd be ready to create new characters just to replay "battle academy" over and over. I'm too scared to go back into another match just to fail as much as last time.
Any suggestion ? All questions are welcome. |

It takes time to get good. You seem to be expecting to be better than people that have been playing for years. You need to learn the maps, learn the suits, and get good. Don't be confused. You're getting killed by skilled players. It's the way the game works.

Salutations, Devis Lionheart . And NO, don't drop this game just yet. I read your post, and the reasons you stated for liking the game, are EXCELLENT reasons for getting hooked on Eve DUST 514.
But the game is called "Eve" Dust 514, because it's based around some really frustrating concepts from an PC game called Eve-Online---and these concepts are the really tough challenge you will be facing with this game. The developers of the game are really clever about its structure:
DON'T remake a new character hoping to repeat Battle Academy---the devs have devised your player account so that it's not really going to let you return to Battle Academy, no matter how many "new" characters you create. Besides, you've already chosen a character name that's way more appropriate and RPG-suitable than most of the names I've come across in the game, so good for you!
You are right--DON'T go wild trying to "improve" your gear too quickly. The devs have also devised this game so that it deliberately cannot be "beaten" or "aced" in 48 hours like most shooting games. Unlocking everything in this game will take years (not joking). Specializing in a particular talent for your game-character is meant to take months. It's called "Grinding" or "Training your character", and there's almost no way to get around the time span of this game. Buying "better" weapons/suits will get you killed faster, unless you first learn survival skills using Militia equipment, and finding protective players and helpful squads to tag along with.
also noticed you made a lot of HEALTHY-minded observations about your own position and contribution during the match----so KUDOS to you. I only wish LOTS of players were able to reflect so objectively on what happened to them in the match as you did.
---It will be radically difficult to stay alive while moving around a battlefield on your own. The scariness and fear of quick death will be constantly against youGǪ until you gradually develop awareness, and gain confidence about your movements.
----Players will constantly want you to "join my squad", offering you hope of protection ans fire support---and most will disappoint you by how scatter-brained and dangerous it is to be in their squad, and how little 'teamwork' and "support' they actually give you.
----It will be very difficult to figure out whose advice to you in these forums is actually the kind of advice you need, and when you're in the game, it will be difficult to socialize with players and figure out who is trustworthy and who is feeding you lousy guidance.
GǪAnd surprisingly, the creators of the game WANT you to go through all these tough obstacles as your only way of learning how to master the game.
So my suggestion is, stay in the game (you appear to have all the right thinking for a game like this), and socialize with players by using the mail inbox in your game menu, and using the posts in this Rookie Training forum.
You may even get some mail from players like me in your NeoCom inbox!! Not all Dust players are great shooters. Some are great TEACHERS and Tutors instead. It's a more weird and interesting game than you can even guess at your present level.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

Apoleon is just an ass that doesn't belong in the rookie training grounds... hit me up in Y.A.M.A.H and friends pub... I'll squad with you and show you some ropes... What PC is? No, not a PC. PC Planetary Conquest... it's suppose to be a higher level of battle (Proto 24/7 and sometimes officer)... but as you can probably tell some people don't do PC and they run it in pubs... or they're just complete dicks and want to destroy NPE... Why are you have such bad battles? It's because our player count is so low... it screws with MM... so it's terrabad...

I have a problem with this... I know my name isn't appropriate for RPG type games... but... It's been my game name since 2008... Actually my game name is "ThePancakeKnight" but I felt that wasn't suitable for an FPS... So I chose Radiant Pancake...
Also, another tad bit of advice, I strongly suggest you join a Newb training corp... Dust University is one... There is also Immortal Guides... I also highly suggest you join the chat channel "Learning coalition" This channel is where you will find vets or semi-helpful people like that guy Apoleon...

I have about 9 PSNs... all with alts on them... In battle academy, you're just learning the mechanics right? I already know those so I have the upper hand... I also already know the maps and spawn locations... I also know when something say PRO - (Insert Role here) I know to not shoot them... There are sections in these forums with the maps for each game mode... I highly suggest you study them and get yourself all buddy buddy with the maps... I will edit with Link shortly.

Just remember that this is a game played by actual humans, eve time you lose a suit, vehicle, etc you have to spend isk to replace it. Just keep trying different methods of fighting and driving, pilot. You will find what you like,

@ Devis
You have a long road ahead.
This game has RPG elements, that though fun, have created a massive chasm between new players and veterans.
First off, SP is quite a grind, and confers quite an advantage. Even wearing the same gear, a vet likely has a lower profile, more armor, and more shields.
Higher tier suits have higher fitting space, which allows for higher tier modules, which means more HP and more DPS.
THEN you have the warbarge benefits, which take time to develop. This not only gives free experimental weapons, but also applies extra weapon damage.
So you can be of equal skill as a vet, and even have a skill advantage, and get completely owned.
There is supposed to be matchmaking in place to put newer players together, but the player numbers are too low for this to be effective.
I do agree that Dust has many unique characteristics that other shooters don't, and in that it has some value. If anything, I hope that you will be better prepared for the port that we hope is on the way.
Now that you know what you are getting yourself into, a few suggestions:
Get involved with a corp. Preferably one in the Learning Coalition. Dust University is always a great corp for new players to join.
Focus on Core Skills first. Skills like Armor, Shields, and Dampening will apply to all suits no matter which you choose to use, whether it be Starter, BPO, or Officer.
WP will be tougher to come by off the bat. Supporting activities will help at the beginning, placing uplinks, hives, or repairing a heavy. Just don't spend too much SP, and use the Militia versions to get an idea of what works best for your style first. As for kills, you probably won't get very many, but I highly suggest using REs. Even at standard levels, they are deadly, and fun to set traps with. Just be aware they are used in the EQ slot along with the Uplinks, Hives, Repairers etc.
When possible, stick with a squad, even if you aren't technically in it. You will be more effective with others around you, and less of a target yourself.
There are plenty of good videos on Youtube for strategy and everything, just take them with a grain of salt, as a few of the uploaders are dilusional.
Lastly, never, ever ever ever ever ever, join Duna's corp. Ever.
Former CEO of the Land of the BIind.
Any double entendre is unintended I assure you.

I'm glad to see some of the guys on here giving excellent tips. Well done in helping out.
@ Devis:
Much of the advice I could give has already been said by the others: get to know the mechanics, learn map knowledge, upgrade your core Dropsuit Upgrade skills first, and stick together in squads that encourage teamwork.
I'm also glad to see the recommendations to join the new player corps (Thanks guys!) such as our corp, Dust University or even Learning Coalition. As one of the leaders in Dust Uni, I love helping out new players, whether it's lending them an extra hand in battle or some giving some extra advice about the game to help you improve your understanding, skills, and tactics. My friend and CEO of Immortal Guides, Fox Gaiden, has been a great mentor and teacher as well, should you decide to look into their corp. Whichever decision you make, we'll be happy to take you in and help you learn about the game.
Some final things I would like to highlight as well that haven't been touched on:
Don't be afraid to ask questions. It goes without saying, but if you don't understand something, speak up! Many of us, like you saw in this thread, are more than willing to help you with your questions. Seeing as you made this thread, I'm confident you'll have no problem in this department.
KDR doesn't mean everything. This is simply one of the many stats used to show your performance in a certain aspect of your battle experience. There are other things to take into account such as a supportive role - one which people like me disregard KDR altogether and look directly at how many War Points (WP) we have gained in battle to support our team. But there's another statistic that no other first person shooter has done - having an economy and a currency.
Economics on the battlefield.
Quote:"...This equipment must be purchased from the Marketplace, and will not be returned to you should you lose consciousness or life in battle."- Way of the Mercenary trailer Loss of gear when you die. From my knowledge, this is the only game where, when you lose a suit of any type that is not a Blueprint Original (BPO), such as your starter suits, you will have to purchase some more after you lost it. It's a very foreign concept to most First Person Shooter players that suddenly become startling reality in which that highly rewarding suit and loadout and gear, actually comes with a high price. If you had managed to blow up one of those Heavily Armored Vehicles (HAVs), you would have watched someone's wallet vaporize on your screen.
Linking this back to the previous KDR point, sometimes you'll want play specifically to increase your wallet, which means having to make some decisions about your risk/reward management. Sure, it's great to want to run the highest quality gear, while having the best KDR, with little to no ISK loss. But when faced against equal or greater skill/gear applications, that ideal isn't realistic.
I won't go into detail about it right now, but it will definitely be something to keep in mind when encountering the vast battlefields of New Eden. Concepts such as "losing the battle, but winning the war" and "battle of attrition" are carried out everyday in Dust 514.
In closing, I would like to, once again, extend an invitation to Dust University or Learning Coalition, as well as joining the chat channel "Learning Coalition", which I also frequent. We'd be happy to have you.
See you on the battlefield. o7

I'll make it easy for you.
You need to be in a squad, one man in your squad MUST be scanning for you. That is his only role, if he dies then his scans go with him. He needs to have a Proto Gallente Logi, and must have at least three Proto Flux scanners ( the one that scans for 200 meters). Those scans must never relapse, they must be maintained 24/7. Also pay attention where you position yourselves ( check you back consistently or pay the price of squad death). The better players WILL try to flank you, and your scanners won't work on everyone.
You want one or two guys with hives and a Six kin repair tool, and a Proto Revive Needle. The Healing Logis must help to fight, they can't only heal. The last person(s?) in your squad needs to be in a killer suit, the Gallente Assault is all the rage right now, their weapons received a very good buff some time ago.
Now I realize you don't have the SP to pull this off just yet, but try to fit your suits as close as possible to this ideal.
I have an example video below to help you out. I'm not any of the people talking in the video.

We've all been there and now for all the new players, things are very difficult. Keep using your starter suits and adapt. Most importantly, try to have fun!
I have all proto gear, but that doesn't make me good. I still die a lot. I always switch my suits to my needs. I'll use basic suits for fun or the LP suits.
This game requires much time and patience. Remember to always take breaks, because it is addictive. Peace. |
