Salutations, Devis Lionheart . And NO, don't drop this game just yet. I read your post, and the reasons you stated for liking the game, are EXCELLENT reasons for getting hooked on Eve DUST 514.
But the game is called "Eve" Dust 514, because it's based around some really frustrating concepts from an PC game called Eve-Online---and these concepts are the really tough challenge you will be facing with this game. The developers of the game are really clever about its structure:
DON'T remake a new character hoping to repeat Battle Academy---the devs have devised your player account so that it's not really going to let you return to Battle Academy, no matter how many "new" characters you create. Besides, you've already chosen a character name that's way more appropriate and RPG-suitable than most of the names I've come across in the game, so good for you!
You are right--DON'T go wild trying to "improve" your gear too quickly. The devs have also devised this game so that it deliberately cannot be "beaten" or "aced" in 48 hours like most shooting games. Unlocking everything in this game will take years (not joking). Specializing in a particular talent for your game-character is meant to take months. It's called "Grinding" or "Training your character", and there's almost no way to get around the time span of this game. Buying "better" weapons/suits will get you killed faster, unless you first learn survival skills using Militia equipment, and finding protective players and helpful squads to tag along with.
also noticed you made a lot of HEALTHY-minded observations about your own position and contribution during the match----so KUDOS to you. I only wish LOTS of players were able to reflect so objectively on what happened to them in the match as you did.
---It will be radically difficult to stay alive while moving around a battlefield on your own. The scariness and fear of quick death will be constantly against youGǪ until you gradually develop awareness, and gain confidence about your movements.
----Players will constantly want you to "join my squad", offering you hope of protection ans fire support---and most will disappoint you by how scatter-brained and dangerous it is to be in their squad, and how little 'teamwork' and "support' they actually give you.
----It will be very difficult to figure out whose advice to you in these forums is actually the kind of advice you need, and when you're in the game, it will be difficult to socialize with players and figure out who is trustworthy and who is feeding you lousy guidance.
GǪAnd surprisingly, the creators of the game WANT you to go through all these tough obstacles as your only way of learning how to master the game.
So my suggestion is, stay in the game (you appear to have all the right thinking for a game like this), and socialize with players by using the mail inbox in your game menu, and using the posts in this Rookie Training forum.
You may even get some mail from players like me in your NeoCom inbox!! Not all Dust players are great shooters. Some are great TEACHERS and Tutors instead. It's a more weird and interesting game than you can even guess at your present level.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
