Well, if we want to get semantic about it, considering the name is, as you stated, it makes sense for an English speaker to annotate the name down to America (4 syllables vs 8) and then to use the plural, Americas, to denote the land mass we used to form our name. Considering only the pedantic amongst the world's population would question as to which country on both the North American and South American continent would have the gall to represent themselves just by the name America when several nations inhabit said space. Realistically, only the really slow amongst us would miss the reference to which nation you speak of when stating 'America', once again, because it isn't the plural form which would denote the land masses (as there are two, separated by the equator into North and South). Just saying. ETA: weird Freudian slip on my phones autocorrect had changed country to company... albeit, one could argue the American government, as well as the rest of the governments in the Americas, operate more like a company then one would hope, it is still not correct to denote them as such. No problem :) figured you might not understand the usage, so I tried to give you a thorough response in hopes you would understand the usage after that. It can seem very egotistical at first glance without knowing why... but the fact that America (and to some extent, a portion of Americans) thinks they can speak up for the rest of the Americas is truly egotistical. Unlike Spanish, tense and plurality is very hard to comprehend in English, making it one of the harder languages to learn... hence why it is spoken so poorly on the forums. As well, ownership and the structures of inference are so convoluted that must Americans give up and speak as plainly as possible in hopes someone won't misunderstand them... this is particularly true of the southern states, leading to the belief that they are all stupid because they try to use the language at the lowest level possible to get their point across. This is probably correct, I tried remembering off the top of my head, which I only remembered he was a merchant in Florence who probably had no clue before he died that a continent was named after him. Regardless, it's latin, which is much closer to spanish then english.

Problem with Southern America vs those countries - it's a self-reliant part of the country, if they separated from us they'd be fine, where as China, Japan, and India, if they even attempted separation starvation would spread like the black plaque. and in India's and China's case, there issues and policies leak into the countries around them.
