I have a feeling SC is going to blow when the full Star Marine package is released. I have been playing arena commander and having a blast.
In comparison to Dust 514 it has its strengths and weaknesses. < Thread is now Dust related do not locker room it.

Janky walking animations that look worse than DUST did in beta? Check. Focus on spaceships not ground combat? Check. Not available on PS3 with no plans to port to the platform? Check.
I'd rather see DUST 514 being compared with Destiny (where it has a few advantages, but a lot of disadvantages in spite of how poorly-done Destiny was done for its price tag). Both are first-person shooters set in a sci-fi setting. Both marketed themselves as having MMO gameplay elements. Both are on PS3. And, in a further relevant comparison, both have shown their fanbases wave after wave of disappointment with only a few high points keeping people playing. |

Let's not forget that players till have an option to regulate whether or not they can be interacted with by other players as long as they stay in the "core" areas of the game. Given the kind of community I've seen in Elite Dangerous, you're going to have a LOT of whiny man-children who never leave the highest-security space because they're afraid other players might be mean to them.
Add to that that SC will not allow players to hold Sovereignty over solar systems, nor will it allow players to build space structures or manufacture anything directly, and SC is no threat whatsoever to EVE Online.
Rather, they are two different experiences that each have merit in their own right.

Star Citizen is still a hell of a long way off and it still needs massive amounts of work, coding, time and effort.
But you know the promising thing about it all..... I AM seeing progress in that game. Being able to actually fly your ship somewhere, EVA with friends to capture a derelict ship... Absolutely fantastic.
Who knows maybe the FPS portion might even be ok too. CCP has a bit of a timer ticking down I feel.

The first paragraph sounds like most of EvE.
Sov gameplay is now cancer in EvE. People don't even want it. Thankfully low sec got a proper revival with the jump changes, but CCP looks intent on mucking that up now as well.
Seems like CCP is trying to see how few people they can keep the game alive with.

It's gorgeous, immersive and strangely statesman-like in its pace of action, but I can't see what you'd want to take from it to give to Dust, except for that beautifully executed music. I wish EvE was more like SC in terms of having a person to move from one ship to another like that, but oh well.

It is so many things eve could have had. Then we could have eve (with proper avatar combat) on pc and ps4 with none of this seperate games with chat channels stuff.
Elite dangerous is about to get proper planetary landing and moon buggies. GDP demonstrated planetary flight years ago then dumped it, walking in station then dropped it. SC despite what people say is comming along In leaps and bounds.
I fear for the future of this ip that we invest in. As others are producing what we thought ccp were aiming for but passed it by.

Arena Commander is already great fun, and the progress SC is making iis incredible. Under normal circumstances, we still would have barely heard of SC at this point in its development. Instead, we're showered with updates and communication. Be angry all you want but the game is coming along swimmingly.

The point of the multicrew part of this game isnt that there are vehicles with multiple positions that people can fill (which is pretty common these days), the point is that this game allows people to seamlessly walk around the space station/transport ship/ship interior positions/boarding target/whatever as they desire. They dont just click a button and teleport from one position to another like in Dust tanks.
In SC you can walk from your quarters, to your hanger, climb into your ship cockpit, lift off, leave the hanger, warp over to #juicyspacedebris, open your cockpit, float over to space debris, harvest it or whatever, get back into your cockpit, and return to the station with your goodies. All of this is seamless from the player's perspective, there is no loading for each transition. |

In looking back over some of your dust posting, the praise you have for another behind schedule overhyped game is understandable I suppose.
I wouldn't have advised people to give CCP one cent after FF'14, but I am not their mothers.

SC is one of those projects where I don't care if it takes them 10 years to get it fully released, so long as it's handled with care I'm plenty happy. My Destiny craze was fueled by my at the time fresh over the top hatred for this game, and also a stark reminder why I shouldn't get overhyped for things. That said, I would be a straight up idiot to not support a dream that i myself have held for many many years. Even if the game somehow falls flat on its face I'd still have been happy just to lend that little tiny bit of help to something totally ******* awesome. And also all the modules being released are plenty fun. I want blitz ball grappling hook thing in space, yes please

Honestly the biggest hang up I have for SC is that it sounds, thus far, like Feature Creep, the game.
Feature creep in software development is one of the most dangerous and easiest things to do, especially with a culture of hype such as Star Citizen has. There are so many promised features and capabilities and things to do all with incredibly intricate things that it at times feels like features were added or thought of on a "this would be cool" concept rather than fitting into a larger game structure.
Take for example a few matters, they featured long cut scenes on undock / dock up. Having played EVE I can tell you that such actions are rather mundane and having to wait for any period of cut scene is annoying, and from playing SWTOR that was a big gripe of mine. Other annoyances are in things such as the packing system and storage systems for freighter vehicles that were unveiled and talked about when those ships were first on sell.
While a lot of what can be done sounds cool, I feel the features will ultimately become needless busy work, or annoyances. Players who enjoy hauling freight in games such as ED and EVE are unlikely to enjoy the sub-activites around freighting (stacking up the cargo, arranging them, adding advertisement windows, ensuring proper stacking and the tetris like mini-game of positioning supplies.
These concepts can be cool by themselves but when weaved into a larger user story seem less and less like the core enjoyment and instead busy work that keeps players from the main reason they do an activity. Think of it this way, imagine if in DUST you could add a few % more damage (like a basic damage mod) to a weapon damage by doing some sort of weapon cleaning mini-game, and this had to be done every couple of battles. This might be fun once or twice but would quickly become a tiresome chore. Still many players would do it because of the added benefits however slight.
What I am trying to get it is that my problem with SC is that it has so many proposed features many of which sound like mini-games or cut scenes that would be enjoyable for a short while but quickly become tiresome. (Looking at you Passenger Ship mini-games) This, combined with the fact many different activities feel so disjoint from each other as to feel totally unrelated. Then every few months the game has a sale which introduces a new ship type, often with completely new features introduced with it that apply to that specific flavor of ship. This is feature creep, and only causes the end product to take more and more development time.

This is feature creep, and only causes the end product to take more and more development time. But more and more development time is fine so long as the end product reflects the vision that created it. I am concerned for "dead time" kind of like a ground trooper sitting in the passenger seat, what will he have to do? Stuff like that can likely be addressed with just more and more little things to do (exactly what you hate). The thing about SC though is that it's supposed to be a space simulator, and parts of space are going to be boring and tedious. I think that's part of the pitched beauty of it all, if it ends up working as envisioned.
Being good at doing the little things will just make you that much better than the competition, allowing you to train friends to also be that much better and pull that much further ahead. It definitely won't be for everyone, but depending on how they launch the final game you may never even have to be involved with that. For all we know, if you just want to dogfight, like in AC, you can do that and only that. If you want to shoot faces in SM, you can do that and only that. If you want to race, you can do that and only that. Or you can go out and do everything, or some of it.
Who knows. It's a big dream and plenty have failed before it *cough cough* but if it keeps going the way it's going, the end product will be something thoroughly addicting to those who crave over the top immersion and quality.
Guess we just ride the train and see what happens
