Macintosh gave a great lecture on knifing. The basic idea is that you change your perspective to that of a stalker. Ambush in the 'cat hunting something' sense. You also need to get much closer than one would think.
Use as a defense sidearm is based on closing distance and surprising the crap out of whomever is attacking you.
It's hard to beat up hundreds of armor piercing bullets using only your face...

Knives work best when used as a sidearm, meaning that to get the most use out of them, you should also be running a light weapon. I use the ACR.

While it should be like that, with enough skill, there is no need. I remember when I first skilled them to proto. They were extremely popular. I went 37/5 only using knives, no grenades no rifle, after like my 8th match using them.

Personally on my main NK fit I run it as a primary with a BP as a side arm since it's got a punch and it's hard for enemies to tell where the BP fire is coming from. Throw on 3 KC's, one Precision, one jump, and one PG upgrade (advanced fit, you'll die a lot) and you're good to go.
Do not engage enemies straight on with that fit. There are many ways to do it, find the one that works for you. Remember it's good to stalk guys and get them when they're hacking :)
Edit: Also some maps / sockets are better than others for NK's. |

Don't feel bad about running a Cloak; it is an extremely useful piece of equipment, and it's the only thing that is consistent on all my Scout fits. Don't think that you're too good for the Cloak, and don't think that the Cloak is too good for you. Feel no shame when people call you a scrub for using it; they're just scrubs themselves for failing to counter it.

Some people may tell you that the Cloak is more of a hindrance than anything, but they're just not using it right. Heck, I could write a whole guide just on how to use the Cloak effectively.

I'm horrible with map names, since CCP couldn't put the one useful piece of info on deploying into a map (THE NAME!).
I like the city socket ones, the gal lag facility is definitely not a good NK one. The new surface research facility PC map is a great one and the CH one can be depending on who you're fighting. Sockets with cover and CRU's / supply depots make for good ones. I personally use my speed / precision to keep an eye out for enemies and murder them while they're focusing on something else. |

I... am strictly Anti Cloak... so :P I do pretty decent without it... trained a person how to knife without a cloak... he said it was like he was neutered... But in the end he got the hang of it... and thus was even more deadly. :)

There are many nuances that you are better off figuring out yourself. As far as simple tips for beginners go, I'll try some:
1) Basic knives are rubbish. Advanced are usable, proto are much better. These differences are much more pronounced than with rifles (though not as bad as they used to be). I often use advanced.
2) Try to stab people in the back before being spotted, preferably when they are stationary. For this you need stealth (dampeners, cloak if you can), and speed (kincat). My optimal fit is a Min scout with two dampeners and a kincat.
3) It's easiest to stab people when they are hacking. Stalk your prey and wait for the best time to attack. Don't give away your presence until you strike. Most targets, except heavies, are difficult to knife when they are running away from you, as the knives tend to miss.
4) Practice when best to charge, and when best to use quick slashes. Killing targets instantly with charged swipes is best, but not always the most practical. Be ready to finish targets with your light weapon if they move out of range after your initial hit.
I hope this helps. |

I remember back when I was new and inexperienced, I sucked so badly that I waited by our homepoint THE ENTIRE MATCH just so I could stab one guy when he came to hack it. Ahh, those were the days...
