Actually, Zaria, if you're all about interacting with players, why am I not seeing you on the TweetFleet slack?
Alternatively, if I/We were to offer to help you run a live town-hall meeting online, would you go for it, or support that future CPMs (within NDAs) participate in such on a regular basis? |

Sadly, this is too little, too late.
I've been a supporter of Zaria since I met her, and very quickly you'll learn she is very capable and idealistic. However, I feel at this point in time, nothing can come from anymore CPM influence.
I begged her to run the last election. CPM doesn't matter, nor did it ever, in this young game.
Such a bittersweet announcement.

Skype is heavily used for communication between CSM/CPM and CCP. For this reason, it's a lot more popular for live chat than IRC. And... my answer below.
G Clone wrote:Actually, Zaria, if you're all about interacting with players, why am I not seeing you on the TweetFleet slack?
Nobody gives a single care about Slack. It's literally cancer. It's security is poor, it's usage model is inane, and any company that uses Slack internally has absolutely lost its marbles.

Having had a mandatory Skype install on work-computers, I've also seen just how much it impacts resource-usage, just from idling; since then, I've decided that I will not bother with Skype, since I have other things to use my computer for.
I am not opposed to CPM using Skype, I'm just looking for other channels (out-of-game) in order to engage CPM members in discussions.

How many of those users are Dust related?
TweetFleet (as the name implies) has always been dominated by Eve material. Having to sift through the uninformed (related to Dust) comments of your average Eve player in order to have a proper Dust conversation has been consistently inefficient in my outreach experiences.
I'm not a big lover of Skype from a technical perspective either, and in an ideal world there's enough time in the day for community members in general, not just CPM members, to communicate with everyone across all platforms. But just like there are a small subset of languages in which most academic literature is written, there are a small subset of platforms where the majority of Dust players are reachable. Trying to avoid Skype as a distant third communication medium behind the game and forums is trying to fight the times.

Down here in DUST-land, it's not really our business as CPM what stupidity Iceland chooses to engage in.
Several Microsoft, Apple, and Google initiatives that were not announced to the public were discovered via a vulnerability in Slack last year, where Slack allows unauthenticated users with fake email addresses to see what Slack rooms and organization had. This is the first, or what is sure to be several major security breaches.
Slack is, fundamentally, a bad product. The goal is to convince people to place internal corporate discussions, which is, by nature, extremely sensitive communication, on the server of a small startup with no real accountability or proven security practice. It provides no real functional improvements over... say... using IRC, which is a robust, open protocol that is well-understood and can be run inside of a secure internal environment.

Alternatively, if I/We were to offer to help you run a live town-hall meeting online, would you go for it, or support that future CPMs (within NDAs) participate in such on a regular basis? As far as TweetFleet ... slack? I have never ever heard of it before, which may explain why I am not there? The only "TweetFleet" I know of is a Twitter tag, a primarily EVE one? Well, I use Twitter, though I personally don't find it particularly useful for any sort of indepth or serious communication. If this is actually relevant to the DUST community as a whole, well, then I am interested in hearing more, but like I said, never heard of it before, so maybe it isn't used by any large part of the community either?
And how would encouraging people to communicate at all be odd? There are many means, and in game communication would be the first resort for most players regardless, over the forums or any third party means, be it Skype, email, Twitter or whatever else.
Skype I referred to simply because I know current and past CPMs have used it, and CCP emplyees like Rattati and Frame use it, and my understanding is that they do in fact use it communicate between each other. I personally find it a very good medium for constructive conversations, but I am absolutely not saying it is the only option. So, no, I am not telling anyone they need to join it, simply offering it as an option.
A town hall meeting could be a good forum for interaction between players and the CPM, or even potential CPM. I personally see there are both benefits to such an open format, as well as potential problems with it. Large gatherings of DUST players have been known to devolve into trolling of various kinds, which would hardly help anything being accomplished. Now, how well it would work in practice can only be assessed by giving it a try, is pretty much my opinion.
G Clone wrote:Quote:As primarily a console gamer, I would love to see DUST on PS4, or PS4 and PC both. Now, I think the game deserves to move to another platform, PC or console, simply because I think it has a future, and staying on the PS3 would mean it doesnGÇÖt. If DUST gets ported to PC only, it is better than not being ported at all, though that would mean I would have to say goodbye to a lot of dear friends. Games like CS:GO have shown quite effectively that PC Gamers are more interested in cheating than having a good time in a competitive shooter - would you (personally) look for DUST514 to move to a position where it can pretend to a competitive eSports game, and do you see this as a sane move in conjunction with going to a Windows PC platform? Alternatively, in a universe where it is warfare, and not warfair, is the rampant abuse of "3rd party enhancements" simply the logical fit for DUST514's Planetary Conquest mode? I have never been interested in playing any sort of competetive game, particularly a shooter, on PC, and one of my major reasons is exactly that perception of the PC gaming community. So, no, I would not personally have any interest in looking for DUST to become a "serious" eSport on PC. However, overall, DUST moving towards something that is considered a so called serious game by the gaming community as a whole would be a boon, obviously, as it would attract more players and more profits, both of which are long term necessities for the survival of the game.
The port question is a slightly bizarre one. I hope the community as a whole realises that the decision which platform to port to, and to port at all, is solely on CCP, and the CPM, not matter their personal opinions, will have very little to do with a business decision like that. The CPM can convey their opinions, and relate community opinions, but CCP will most certainly make a such a decision all about what makes sense business wise.

We ask not because the CPM would make that decision, but because it reveals information that a player may find valuable in voting. That being said, CPM feedback is definitely listened to by CCP, and our communications can get passed on up the chain, or influence how discussions are held on some matters. Obviously, something on the level of a platform decision is like a CCP boardroom decision, rather than even a studio decision.
The reasons people give for their platform of choice demonstrate how much a CPM candidate factors in functional challenges, business motivations, community perception, and personal preference. There's also the somewhat valid point of whether some candidates would be completely 'out' should the game move to a different platform they prefer.
