With the player count still not seeing any rise, I feel that some people cannot walk away as they invested so much time and money that it would break them. I have dropped easily a minimum of $200 on this game, but I am not going to allow myself to be a prisoner of that number. I have spent many hours and yet, I no longer hold myself hostage to that. Dust is quite high on the delete list if I ever need any space on the drive. I hope that people are not still playing because they feel obligated to. No matter what the reason, if you are feeling obligated to play the game due to investments, you are no longer having fun.

New player retention is up though (still hammering on issues present though), and new matchmaking has largely been incredibly positive for veterans - either bringing them back or keeping them. They're looking at it and AquarHEAD is tweaking it every day.
Everyone with any sense knew that population segregation would cause things to get worse before they got better, but things are getting better, every day.

I keep hearing about "new player retention" and how "there are so and so many new players." I would love to know how people know this. CCP can make the statement "there are X many accounts made weekly" but if those accounts never play more than 10 games, they are not new players. Jeez, people have even been known to farm the academy.

Player retention in MMO's and F2P's is rather abysmally low anyways, It is a good thing when we can get it to go up though.

Not played in weeks and nothing I've seen yet has inspired me to return - except to maybe catch up with a few friends who still remain.
It's been great to be having fun on other games again, although will miss the really close matches of old and the many failed q-synchs resulting in hilarious civil wars when we regularly had enough players on.
This game actually inspired me to begin recording/editing and enjoyed it immensely. But even that stopped a while back as the matches worth recording became too rare. At least we can look back at those and reminisce, so no regrets.
Note - yes I'm still forum-lurking as still want this game (or whatever iteration of it may rise from the ashes) to succeed and continue to be a part of it.

I stay around, because I enjoy the setting we are in, the gameplay can actually be quite fun if you let it, and sometimes you just need to be around a bunch of other asshat ego trippin douchebags to not feel like such an azz yourself

The player count is pretty consistent... and the Dev's are actively updating it... so in your opinion what criteria has to be met to label a game as "dead"?

The day they turn the servers off I will be free.
This is the only video game I play, Once it ends I will not play another again.... Most other games release a new game every year where your stats are wiped. Not this one, but it really does feel like I'm just playing because of the -ú300+ I've invested since June/July 2012.
I had more fun during closed beta when you would DC every 10-20 minutes (I was gunna list a load of other bugs cba though lol). More and more this game is becoming a lobby shooter (Auto aim etc), plus Isk used to be alot more valuable, now with the daily missions, Experimental lab, even keys.... All adds up. It used to be if you died more than once in a pub in Proto, you would go negative no matter what asset wise (Isk+Items).... Now (especially with trading tomorrow) You will be able to die 3/4times in Proto and still go asset positive
I'm not saying I don't enjoy this game, I still do. I think I'm haunted by having the experience of it's much better (despite bugs) past.

I can tell you that at this point I am only still here for two reasons:
1) the friends I have made that have actually stuck around.
2) the absolutely STUPID amount of time and money I have dumped into this game. Honestly I feel like as long as I keep playing then all of that remains validated so I am not an idiot.
I was actually just thinking about how the changes to PC are useless because we have such a terrible player base. No matter what changes are made a small group of people will always run it. This is due to the fact that no one has the ability to recruit PC ready players as there just are not any aside from the try hards who just run to the corp of the week. |

Corp of the week is going to get nerfed via the Corporation Points system IMHO...
You will have to stay in a corp and most likely have to pay CP points for ringers at some point in the future, otherwise try-hard corps will continue to stomp mud holes in anyone trying to get into PC and mercs have no reason to stay in corps and help train up other PC players.
Ratatti has hinted several times that he recognizes that as one of the biggest flaws with Planetary Conquest, as such it would not be a great leap to expect to see restrictions and mechanics put in place to force corp loyalty and nerf the top 1% of the PC player base in order to allow the other 99% to play.
It really does become a veteran retention issue, as more and more veterans get pushed out of the end game... Fac War simply doesn't provide enough of a rush or meaningful gameplay.
The concern is how CCP plans on doing it because if it is made too hard to control enough districts to feel dominant then why would anyone want to do it at all?

NO
im sorry this is wrong
Eve players have put more money in then you. dont think a small drop box of 200 or even 500 is alot when its 15 usd ~ for 30 days time cards are around the same and most players in eve buy some where around 20 time cards a yr or more
it may be smaller but that's every yr that's income 24/7 for eve and dust 514
what im trying to say is take me
im a 09 player and add in 1000 - 2000 usd in time cards only over the yrs only and then add in 09 - 15 only the last 3 months have i not been playing eve online as the fact that im using the money for other stuff as well as time for RL .
the money that dust players put into this game is not as much or even pays for the game and then count on Sony taking some of that money as well.
unless your one of them dum arum users in that case i can see why games like ace combat and dust 514 take FOREVER ! to get remotely done or in dust 514 fixed ! but when there's a new way to milk you for more money you Know CCP,s on it asap the next day ! its why this game should be a free add on to eve but you can only play it if you have a paying eve account ! that will clean up this junk arum and the junk arum players as well as the free to play kids who never even played eve online but think this should be like there COD SPACE game and have all the hi jumps sniper rifle no scopes noob tubes and flash vs metal the meal will die in a fire ball cuss the 14 yr old CCP now tends to want farm game off of face book only with guns .... o and wants to go back to no redline where its a game of camp the other team spawn first and i payed 20 bucks for max SP and guns and im only 1 day old ! who cares about paying game longer then 30 days why work to get skilled when i can just buy it !
vs how dust should be
FPS/MMo/RPG with skilled players good in game support a fun player base full of idea,s of ways to fix and batter there game be-for asking for new maps drop suit looks . a game that works with 1st time players to build them up to join the fac and PC battle and not get pushed into buying sp but a mach maker that,s stops Q sinking and fits players into game vs there sp a game thats about skill players who know how to uses cover and how to flank THE RITE WAY ! stand a better shot at a win then ones who " let's drop up links in the open and run in the open not uses any AV as a team or stand in the door way when i try to room clear .....
i can go on but why this games dead .
Yes i am a Undead Hell Wolf ... nice to meat you!

A good bit of that INVESTMENT was made when we were all being sold on the "10 year plan" and the "MMOFPS of New Eden".
I was trying to not be an ass and say that I am only hanging on to the thought that maybe this game will turn into something besides a lobby shooter so that I can finally let go of the feeling that CCP totally boned me and hundreds of other people with what turned out to be one failure after another until they gave up and basically said okay its not going to happen.
I have gone through tons of strongboxes and felt a bit beat in the head every time but I kept buying keys because I enjoyed opening boxes and seeing if I was going to continue to get beat over the head which I did until I reached a breaking point but I am not talking about that money. I am talking about the money that was spent on the selling point of an open market, having high enough SP to go into the end game content, having a REAL link to Eve, and many other ideas that are long gone.
There are a few ugly syndromes that could be related to why many of us stay around but I will save those for a conversation that will not get me banned. |

That's how it is in many multiplayer games that have a lot of time investment like MMOs. Also it is because friends are playing as well, if friends leave so will other players. I think some players are leaving as the number of players is smaller than it was few months or weeks ago. Although, anyone that is staying are probably more invested and are part of the more hardcore fanbase so it might be harder for them to leave. Many big games hadn't released now-not until s few months though. We'll see with the onslaught of games releasing this fall. |

I am talking about the money that was spent on the selling point of an open market, having high enough SP to go into the end game content, having a REAL link to Eve, and many other ideas that are long gone. There are a few ugly syndromes that could be related to why many of us stay around but I will save those for a conversation that will not get me banned.
I hear ya, I have not given up hope. I know what we were given as a vision never unfolded, a very large portion of my money was spent in the early days to help support that vision also. I'm not going to just write dust off and forget about it, but I can walk away at any time and stop playing. If it's still around when I decide to come back , awesome, it's still holding on! If it falls apart, well, we tried..I still have Eve and get to see what else CCP has in store for the future.. I guess if you do not play Eve , and have not been around the CCP scene for years.. it might not be the same way.
I won't further spend , but I have no regrets on what I have spent. Unless they make an announcement that is a major game changer, and the future looks much brighter..then they might have my wallets attention again. |

I'm beyond tired of pubs. Being matched with supposed veterans who don't carry uplinks, don't kill uplinks, don't shoot at red dots, don't hack points, don't bring out AV, and on and on.
But I seem to go up against teams with drop ships maintaining high ground. Tanks. Infantry moving around. Even enough left to camp on turrets.
But it's all good, I'll play tomorrow and the matchmaking will put me in the boring matches where people quit right away.
Then once every 2 weeks or so I'll get a decent match.

I'm not sure what is going on. If everyone in my squad had HAV level HP and could fire 17 weapons at once spinning around like a Death Star we wouldn't be able to overcome the lack of effort from our blues.

Walk away when it stops being fun. Its the only data CCP needs
I've read this OP 3 times now, at a good 10 minutes apart from each attempt and I still cannot get the mindset here.
I get the state of hesitation and even fear in leaving something that one has invested considerable amounts of whatever into. I can see this in home-improvement, car repairs, relationships (how many struggle to maintain dysfunctional relationships in spite of knowing that it's just not working for no other reason of having spent "time in"!), but dude. This is a video game. Money in is entertainment out. If you're still forking out money after NOT enjoying the game, there are other problems at work here that a game forum ain't fixing.
This is entertainment. Period. Spend money to entertain much like you would subbing to NetFlix. The moment it stops entertaining, then stop spending money and take a break. Worst case? Leave. I am dumbfounded by comments like "...invested so much time and money that it would break them" and "hold myself hostage." Seriously? Who the ferk is having a mental meltdown over a f2p video game?! Sure, there are outliers where kids sit on their arse 24/7 for a few days and start twitching from dehydration, but that's not the norm and you know what I mean. Hell, my ex once freaked the hell out, cussed me then threw a bottle of water at me in a foreign country in front of 3 cops over the suggestion of mine to buy a bus ticket. My point is, there are those rare special cases that require... let's just say a unique level of expectation. Ultimately though, it's a game!
Are people so insecure that there is a need to come here on a forum trying to rally others around to take a stand against paper dragons to feel better about one's financial irresponsibility? I say irresponsibility because in order to create an emotional vacuum enough so that the feeling of guilt and obligation takes over the rational instinct to just push away when done suggests a serious lack of self-control. Who the hell is obligated to play a f2p? You spent some cash? Then burn through your in-game currency and be done with it. If it's hitting hard enough to create any sense of a hostage crisis, chances are ya probably shouldn't have put in your CC# to begin with. Msg me in game though, and I'll be more than happy to be more sympathetic. With an AUR protofit. Funny thing is, I suck at this game and would lose the loadout lol. Who CARES!?
TL/DR In the classic EvE fashion of "don't fly what you can't afford to lose" so too should it be true: "don't spend rent on entertainment."
to pull it all back to point though, seriously: I'm enjoying it. The moment I stop enjoying it is the moment I stop playing ...the game. No need for sympathies. I've spent what I've spent and have gotten my entertainment out of it---at a far better cost-to-entertainment ratio than going to a theater.
p.s. Sorry for the ranting. Just... that OP. 4rlz?

OP is referring to the Sunk Costs fallacy, I think.
A similar situation: "I might as well keep dating this person I'm dating because I have sunk 3 years into the relationship... even though we are obviously not compatible long-term and resent each other."
If you find yourself making Dust 514 a habit instead of a fun hobby, quit. Dust 514 is not a job.
If you are not enjoying yourself then stop logging in. Play another game instead. One that you get enjoyment from.
Or go for a long walk outside. Lift weights. Read a book. Do something worth your time.

I also propose all further comment submissions adhere to inclusion of a soundtrack to amplify your expression of sentiment along the existing themes so that we may continue to understand, help and heal one another in this, our frail shared universe.
I like the game. Made an active decision after FF2014 to stay because of it. With all the ups and downs, back and forth fixing and flipflopping for me any movement is less about walking anywhere and more about moshing till the music stops.
