I have only just found and downloaded this awesome game, but I am getting disheartened at as soon as I leave the battle camp I don'tstand a chance aagainst 9/10 other players on here. it'd sad I know but after 3 new characters I still can't configure a good amour and weapon setup that givers me a chance. any help is appreciated. |

dont spend skill points on anything, just let it accumulate till later, always read the full description of skills and what the passive traits of the skill are, the different factions are good at different things, gallente good with armor, assault rifles, dont bother with shields, caldari good with shields, rail rifles, dont bother with armor. crude descriptions yes, im using ps3 digital keyboard

Never too late. I recently created a new character as I routinely do to test the new player experience and it's right but totally doable. Some tips:
1) Don't delete charters! I did this too at first but really it's better if you just start saving up your passive skill points on one character
2) Play around with your starter fits a bunch before spending any skill points.
3) Spend your first skill points on skills that give passive bonuses instead of unlocking stuff. You can't go wrong here. Once you find a weapon you like get it to level 1 because the standard version is much better than militia, but after that focus on more passive skills, unlocking modules, and unlocking suits.
4) Remember collect your daily warbarge components, attempt any daily missions, and ensure you passive skill point actual is turned on.
5) Join a corp and have fun!

Use cover, play for assist points and unlock drop uplinks asap. Even basic uplinks will net you 50-125 WP per Ambush match that will in turn help you level faster. |

Simple 101 of Dust 514 noob (not offensive) survival technique...
There are only two (min needs 3) skills to skill into first.
If you use Amarr or Gallente suits skill into Amour upgrades LV5
If you use Caldari skill into Shield upgrades LV5
If you use Minmatar you need both.
These will give you more HP on all suits you wear.
You also need the built in wallhack of Dust maxed ASAP, which is called Scan Precision! This also needs to go to LV 5
To get skillpoints fast, and for you being helpfull to the team, bring UPLINKS. Skilling these will give you more to carry and more to deploy. Basic links can only be put down one at a time. If you put down more, the first one will vanish. Uplink placement is important. Always put your back against the wall or corner where you put the uplink at, it will save the people spawning there plenty of lives when somebody tries to camp the LINK. As a new player you will die a lot, so ammo is not needed on your suit. Links will help the team and net you WP.
After that you can invest in Weapon efficiency. Since you should really get a hang an to which weapon you like before putting any skills into them, just skill into damage mods. This will give you more OOMPH without too much SP investment, and it will make your basic/militia gear much more effective. There are some weapons which are horrible with no skills (Rail Rifle for example, the kick gets much better with skills).
When you have found your weapon of choice, skill some levels into proficiency ASAP. Because this will give you more damage even on the basic versions. You don't want to run Proto, since that will just cost a lot, and wont give that much more damage than ADV. ADV is always the most bang for the buck.
Skilling into a proto suit will gain you the proto bonuses even when you use the standard variant of that suit. But not the basic version of that frame. So Sentinel bonuses only apply to sentinel suits, of the same race, and not for the heavy frames of the same race.
But whatever you do, remember to not engage enemys of higher suit ranks on your own, they will probably just turn around and anihilate you...
You will DIE A LOT, it takes very long to get to higher levels, even if you spend your SP wisely you need around 20 mil SP to max a single role, and that will not be a logi, since they need all that equipment stuff maxed aswell.
Skill into what you feel good with, since every FOTM has been nerfed into oblivion eventually. Right now, it's biotics, which make people jump all over the place (the blue bottles Myofib stimulants). The Assault Scrambler Rifle is on the rise and the meta seems to shift towards armour again. Minmatar Assaults are still hard to hit due to hit detection issues. But the AScR is a good counter to that.
Know that the weapons have damage profiles.
Lazor, Scrambler Deal +20% against shields and -20% against armour. Explosive deal -20 against shields and +20 against armour Projectile -15 against shields and +15 against armour Hybrid Rail -10 against shields and +10 against armour Hybrid Blaster +10 against shields and -10 aginst armour
So you have to check what suit your opponent uses, and be extra careful when you have a weak weapon against his main tank. It's better not to engage at all, and not show him where you are by shooting at him. It's always good to have a grenade or sidearm of the opposite damage type of your main weapon.
Dropships, Tanks and especcially the MCC don't take any damage from rifles!!! If you shoot at them, you just make them aware of your position, making it easier for them to anihilate you!
The MCC does not take damage from turrets aswell, so don't waste time shooting at it.
If you see enemy equipment DESTROY IT... never walk past enemy uplinks ever! There might be a heavy spawning on it right now so get rid of it ASAP! Flaylock pistols and flux grenades are the best way to get rid of equipment FAST! Flux grenades work through walls and ceilings.
Just because you can't see an enemy doesn't mean he can't see you (scan precision).
There is equipment Bandwith in the game, meaning that if you deploy more equipment than your suit has bandwith available, the old stuff will pop as you put new stuff down when bandwith is exausted by active equipment. A basic assault can't have more than two pieces of eq active (links or hives).

It's a steep learning curve once you're out of the academy, and you're up against veterans with maxed out suit and weapon skills.
This can mean they have double your hit points and can deal over 25% more damage than you. Remember that. the odds are stacked against you.
Having said that, you kill a suit with red eye(s) and you've cost that player on average 150,000 ISK. It's not easy but you can do that in a free suit, and it gets easier when you start putting points into relevant skills.
I'd keep playing cheap for now, and start putting your points into core skills (ones that apply to all suits) stuff like shield extension. Take a look at the rookie guides. Don't buy expensive suits you cant afford to run, it will just frustrate you.
If you don't mind spending some cash try and get an apex suit. You can then invest in the skills relevant to that suit. This will give you a more level playing field against veterans, and an advantage over players using basic free suits.
I bought an APEX 'nomad' minmatar assault when the veteran pack was 1/2 price. -ú20 got me 100000 aurum. Unfortunately that pack has now gone back up to -ú40. You can play faction warfare for the same suit but be prepared for long waits between battles. It the end i didn't have the patience. Downside with apex suits is you cant customise them.
If you don't want to spend the cash then I'd stick with free or basic suits, and adjust them to suit your playstyle. I tend to stack them with HP using shield extenders and ferroscale plates. You can get a basic suit to around 650hp this way. Try all the weapons at militia level and see what you like.
my favourite cheap weapons;
militia assault rail rifle - doesnt have the charge time penalty of the more expensive ones. combat rifle - good dps and decent range if you can handle the 'burst' fire mechanic, but eats ammo assault combat rifle - same as above but slightly less range and full auto
my not so favorites (but others love em)
scrambler rifle - charge shot can be devestating especially for shield suits. amarr assault bonus prevents heat buildup. assault scrambler - just been buffed and a contender now, but can struggle vs heavily armoured targets - back it up with an anti-armour sidearm like a SMG. rail rifle - great range but bad kick, slow firing and has charge time before firing. assault rifle - good vs shield, easy to use, but shorter range than others and weaker vs armour. not bad but not great.
of course all this is from an assault troops point of view, you may find a HMG heavy or shotgun scout is more your style. If your gungame is lacking but you're good tactically then a logistics support player may be more your thing.
if you're an ******* then skill into vehicles.
TL:DR? stick with it. this game is flawed but imo better than any other lobby shooter out there right now.

You're going to get slaughtered for awhile unless you find a group of players to run with. Don't worry about your kill/death ratio (this was the first FPS that I ever played, and two years later I'm still getting wrecked) and focus only on helping your team win--as others have mentioned, even basic uplinks can be useful or better yet, use a rep tool (I carry one on my assault suits) to earn easy WP by tagging along with a few other players.
A lot of this game is centered around learning the layout of the various maps and finding the advantageous positions for both offense and defense. I'd recommend playing skirmish until you're more confident in your abilities, as smaller contributions can pay off more when there's more than one objective to worry about.

A corporation will do you good, if you don't want to commit to one just yet, I recommend joining the chat channel Learning Coalition and join up with their squads, running most of the time and filled with people who want to teach you how to play the game.
The channel is also a nice place for asking questions, better than your local chat, anyhow.

My biggest tip would be to use a mlt heavy frame instead of the mlt medium frames, they're considerably more durable.
Mlt Cal heavy Shield recharger Armor repairer Mlt assault rail Mlt bolt pistol Mlt grenade.
This setup spoofs what cal suits play like at higher levels, having good shield rep & armor repair with high shield and okay armor. There's some hp variation depending on the style of suit and some get even more rep.
Invest into a dropsuit role, tanking style and weapon first.

Consider buying an apex assault suit, they are very good for new players.
Also, the elite pack is expensive but good value, and comes with a bpo assault that (I believe) requires no skill points and is very good for a new player. A good alternative to an apex suit. Not to mention all the aurum you get.
Sorry it all involes real money, but if that's ok with you it's probably your best option. |

Use www.protofits.com to make fittings you're interested in, test suits, and plan your skill tree before investing SP.
Ask questions! On the forums, in corp, even in local if you're really desperate. There are trolls, so double check everything, but in general most people are really friendly and helpful, especially with new players.

If you're content in staying then I'd say snipe, a headshot with even mlt can do like 700-900 DMG. Or go logi, it's really hard for someone completely new come here and be a slayer, it's possible but won't be easy.

It'll take a little time to find your stride, as it will in any game...DUST inherits a bit of the EVE learning curve (albeit not nearly as severe). Things are constantly being re-balanced, so it ends up being a little more important to find a role/weapon/suit that you are comfortable with and practice with it. Use SP on core Dropsuit skills to up them in general, they help the most and grant you the largest variety of options.
Roles:
Slayer - Suits that specialize at killing other infantry targets, these include Assaults, Scouts, Sentinels, and to a lesser degree The Frames (Light, medium, and heavy) as well as commando suits. Fit for mobility and damage on these (with a little HP boost ofc, stick with Ferroscale Plates, or shield extenders). The Main Battle Rifles are probably best for this role
Support - Carry the Beans Bullets and Bandages for the rest of the team, Logis and Scouts fall into this category...they carry additional equipment that can be used to heal/resupply allies (or yourself), or remote explosives for taking out big targets/setting traps. Grab a Rep Tool for max Points, try to avoid Nanite Injectors (Needles) until you get some good SP in them...carry nanohives or drop uplinks instead.
Point Defense - Stay in one place and deny the area, Sentinels and Heavy frames lend themselves well to this role. Brick them up with Armor Plates and/or Shield Extenders, grab damage mods...and a support buddy to detect pesky scouts
Recon/Flanking - Stay Mobile, Stay out of Sight, Strike when and where they least expect it. Scouts and Light Frames fulfill this role best. Use mobility to the max here, grab a cloak (or don't...sometimes you to place forward uplinks). Shotguns and Tactical Sniper Rifles work well in this role (Although, you can never go wrong with a Main Battle Rifle).
Sniping - Reach out and Touch Somebody. Suits with large numbers of high-slots lend themselves well to this role...I personally prefer the Caldari Commando (Because of a built-in damage bonus and reload bonus). Choice of rifle is largely up to how you want to play: Charge Sniper is a high-Alpha strike rifle, combine with headshots for extreme stoping power. Tactical Sniper Rifle is shorter ranged than the other rifles, but can quickly repeat rounds...probably the best for counter-sniping. Regular Sniper Rifles have Longer range than the Charge Sniper Rifle, but have lower damage. Either grab more hp after up to 3 damage mods, or go for profile reduction to make you harder to find. Always remember to carry a nanohive with you for ammo
Vehicle Operators - A whole section could be written on each type...but I'll say this for now: Dropships are difficult to get into, but once you get the hang of it, they're very fun to fly around...check them out...and for the love of the Empress make sure you fit modules onto your vehicles.
Anti-Vehicle (AV) - Swarm Launchers, PLCs, Forgeguns, Assault HMGs, Remote Explosives, and AV Grenades put a big dent in someone's wallet. Commandos or Sentinels work best in this roll (Assaults as well).
Terminology for Weapons:
Assault - Automatic, Fast Firing, Close Range, Low Damage Per Shot, High DPS (Applies to all except HMG right now)
Burst - Burst Fire Mechanics, Medium Range, Good DPS (dependent on how fast you pull the trigger)
Tactical - Semi-Automatic, Medium-Long Range, Good DPS (dependent on how fast you pull the trigger)
Breach - Automatic, Slow Firing, Medium-Long Range, High Damage per shot, Fair DPS
Think about what kind of weapon you want to use, how you want to use it, and how much mobility vs HP vs utility you want.
For Up Close Weapons, look for Gallente: Shotgun, Assault Rifle, and Heavy Machine Guns are the big ones for them (Shotgun is very very close range in this game compared to other FPSs)...HMGs come in two close range flavors: The Regular and the Burst (The Assault is a Mid Ranged one...may be renamed breach soon). Burst HMG is great for eliminating other heavy frame based suits, while the Regular shreds almost everything else with impunity. The assault rifle gets into the mid range (and is the only "Main Battle Rifle" in the close range category). The assault rifle has several variants that emulate the other rifles' functionality.
For Mid Ranged Weaponry, look for Amarr/Minmatar: Scrambler Rifle and Combat Rifle are probably the best generalist weapons in the game...they perform the role of no frills standard armament surprisingly well. (If you don't like heat management, but like the Semi-auto feel of the Scrambler, get into the Tactical Assault Rifle...drops heat but also the charge shot)
For Long Ranged Weaponry look for Caldari: The Rail Rifle is the generalist option here, Sniper Rifles are the specialist option. Avoid snipers for now, they have a high barrier of entry in regards to SP to make the effective enough to use (hopefully will be rectified soon)...get a few MLT snipers to try to get a feel, but don't run the role regularly (unless you find you are a god among immortal mercs at getting headshots). Forge Guns are another long-range option, and are designed as anti-material weapons...luckily infantry happen to be made of material.
For Specialty weapons: The Mass Driver is a useful area denial tool that has become more relevant recently, I highly recomend checking it out (Stick with MLT stuff to get a feel for things)
The Plasma Cannon is another Anti-material weapon, but unlike the forge gun...I put it into the Close-mid range category, it takes a lot of practice to use...but it is a very fun weapon
The Laser Rifle is a mid-long range weapon that actually looses damage close-up. Additionally, the laser rifle gains strength as you heat it up...with practice it can be the deadliest weapon on the battlefield.
Khanid Logi and Tanker, sometimes AV Heavy or Sniper.

Thanks every one.:) you've done what every one does at first. nothing is wasted because their is no limit to how many SP you can have. you've just wasted some time is all or wasted SP on stuff you won't use much.
like already said play around with MLT and see what works best for you. if you want to work around the difficulty of going up against leveled players you can delete 2 characters every few hours and each new character last about 2 hours in academy where you'll mostly be against other new players. there's a 9 hour timer until you can fully delete your char, the first time you click delete it starts a 9 hour time, when the timer is up you can then hit delete for final or cancel. it's like a fail safe with a 9 hour timer in between clicking "are you sure?"
if you still want to play in academy after your 2 alts have graduated you just make a new PSN account and now you have 3 characters to delete + the 2 alts from your main acount for a total of 5 academy chars.. tho i recommend keeping 1 character on another account to sit and gain passive. when you come back to him after a couple of months he will have a couple mil SP from passive gain.
you will get bored tho of the low challenge level of academy but ppl actually try to fight there and the fights are mostly frontal infantry clashes without experienced players running all kinds of flanks and tricks and there is no proto in academy. the most you'll run up against is ADV but that is very rare in academy, it is mostly MLT default suits so if you alter those for just raw HP by replacing recharge and rep mods for HP modes (recharge and dual reps are good but not until you can run proto reps, do not run MLT dual reps) you will actually have an edge in there vs the other newbs who are running default dual MLT reps and other redundant crap.
soloing outside of academy is possible but not recommended until you have somewhere around 6mil SP char. remember you don't have to engage every red you see.. dont worry about what other players think, in a pub you don't owe anyone anything despite what the forums say, unless your in a squad that's agreed to some terms before the match.
most weapons are situational with AR being the most versatile so learn what situations your prefered wep does best in and avoid trying to take on something your weap is not really designed for,
like you don't engage heavies if you run a Mass Driver but you will destroy scouts with one. as with the combat rifle it eats heavies but usually scouts just dance around it.. |

I found that using a basic light suit with uplinks, a repair too, combat rifle and staying in motion as much as possible has helped me stay alive quite a bit. Don't aim down your sights, unless your sniping, because you slow down ALOT! Like others have said before me the uplinks are extremely helpful, both for you,AND your team, a well placed uplink will get you sp in abundance. Armor repair is essential in my opinion, . Get flux grenades!!! Militia grade is okay, they destroy enemy equipment, and shields!!! Destroying their shields will net you kill assist points if your teammates kill them, just by tossing a grenade. Find a corp, and if they don't squad with you often, find another.. Some mentioned the Learning Coalition chat channel, that is definitely a must for any new bro. I hope you stick around, if you need any help send me an in game mail, I'll try to help, but take note.. Try to stick with as many of your teammates as possible. Teamwork keeps you alive longer to allow you to get a feel of how to handle different styles of engagement you will see from people in battle. Plus, you will end up with a bunch of assists which will earn you WP.

The game is easier to get into now as a new player than it was just 6 months ago. The reason for this is the new rules on SP Boosters, SP Cap, and the Respec option. Here is my advice:
1. Get an idea of how much money you are willing to spend, if any at all. You can get a pack that has a 30 day Active and a 30 day Passive booster for around 10 dollars worth of Aurum. Boosters increase the amount of SP you get after the match. The basic ones are +50% SP that can be stacked 3 times. This means that you can get as much as 2.5x as much SP as you would normally. There is 750k cap a week, 4 weeks in a month. IF you can cap out all 4 weeks, you will have 7,500,000 SP. That is very, very close to the generally accepted amount of 8 million needed to get Prototype in a single role. With Triple Booster, you can get a role to advanced in a week or two. The SP difference for capping out 4 times in a month with 30 days of Passive with boosters is:
None: 3 million Active / 720k Passive. 1 of each: 4.5 million Active / 1.08 million Passive. 2 of each: 6 million Active / 1.44 million Passive. 3 of each: 7.5 million Active / 1.8 million Passive.
Capping out isn't difficult but it takes a quite a bit of time. If you CAN cap out EVERY week, you can get a Prototype Role a month (9.3 million). Again, not necessary but it is an option that you can take to get to be more competitive in a shorter period of time.
2. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION WHERE YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR SKILLS! Again, with the Respec option, it isn't as bad but it can still severely hurt you in the early days to have 200,000 SP invested somewhere you do not want. I have 46 million SP. If I blow a million into something, no big deal. I still have my Proto Logistics, Scout, Assault, ADS, etc. to get around with. If you have 5 million and have a million tied into something you don't want, that's 20% of your SP.
3. If you want to try something out, USE THE MILITIA GEAR FIRST! There is militia version of everything save for Militia Assault Dropships. If you like the Militia version, go basic. Stay Basic for a little while to see if you like it at all. Like a week or more. If you love it, go Advanced. Don't bother going Prototype anything until you have a hefty sum of SP, like 8 million+.
4. Passive Skills are ALWAYS safe! No matter what role you will do, you will still probably want 25% more CPU/PG, 25% more Armor/Shields, Profile Dampening, etc. If you go Minmatar Logistics to 5 and you are not in a Minmatar Logistics suit, you are not utilizing a about 3 million SP. A word of advice though: Engineering and Electronics are very important but don't just automatically get them to 5. They are 5x skills so it takes quite a bit to get them up. Getting them to about level 2-4 and than only getting them to 5 when you are actually pushing the PG/CPU limit is the wisest idea.
5. Someone with 130 million SP is simply not going to be a better Minmatar Logistics than me because they have 3 times my SP; I am maxed out in that role. The only difference is that they can use more gear. As stated above, 8-10 million is about the SP you need to max out a single role. Once you hit that, you are only expanding what you can do rather than getting better. That is the trick about DUST: you can only utilize so much of your SP at once. You can't be a Cloaked Scout and a HMG Heavy at the same time. This, again, is why Passives are so great.
6. Here are the SP costs to raise skills: Level 1 = 6220 SP
Level 2 = 18,650 SP
Level 3 = 43,530 SP
Level 4 = 87, 060 SP
Level 5 = 155,460 SP
You then multiply that number by the Skill Multiplier. So something like Rail Rifle Operation is a level 2 skill. Getting it to level 1 would cost 12,440. Getting it to level 3 for level 1 would cost an additional 124,360. As you can see, the first level is super easy. A good match should get you to level 1 in the lower level skills. But it scales up, fast. At every level, you are spending more than you did with all previous levels combined. The exception is level 5 which costs exactly the same as levels 1-4. This is why it is generally best not to rush anything to level 5. Sure, you can get your Dropsuit to level 5 (costing 2,487,460 SP) but if you instead get it to level 3 (costing 547,200) you have over 1.9 million SP to go around. An Advanced Minmatar Assault suit with advanced levels gear is going to be stronger, cheaper, and easier to train than a Prototype Minmatar Assault suit with Militia modules.
