First of realise that... #1 this is one of the hardest game you will ever play because they put the new guys against experience leveled up players. You will die alot but, t gets better with time.
#2 In order to become competive you need to level up your skills. ok but, which skills you ask? It depend on your playing style. Like others have said, for now (a month or 2) use the standard gear that has been given to you which doesn't run out.
#3 This is a squad based game. it is very hard to go solo although it can be done. Squads that are well coordinated are deadly.
Now, some very helpful advice. In the dropsuit upgrade section open up at least level one of the repair tool. Carry that tool on all characters you use. YES, ALL CHARACTERS. At least for a while. All players have 2 bars. The top bar is the shields. The bottom bar is the armor. With the repair tool you can repair the armor and get a lot of points for that. A LOT!!!!! You will also gain a lot of Skill points and also money at the end of each battle. You ca go whole battles without killing a single person yet come out in first place.
Alternatively open up the drop uplinks. BUT!!!!!!!! for the love of God learn where to place them. |

don't hangout in cover for too long because someones formulating a plan to flank and ambush you while you think your safe behind cover. learn to predict the flank, fall back and set up the flanker, you'r now aiming at the spot you left and you'r behind new cover after falling back, and are now waiting for the flanker to look for you but, SURPRISE! you aren't there, you have changed position and he is now looking at the spot you were behind cover at but you predicted he would do this and you now have him set him up in your sights from a new position.
this is also how an RE will kill you, by making you come to him he has placed an RE and is luring you towards it. it's a fallback kill and also the MD works well for, because you are waiting for them to give chase and are waiting for him to round the corner you turned, he thinks your still fleeing from him but it's a setup because now you've turned around 180 to the corner he's about to round from chasing you, ideally by this time you're shields are fully recharge or ideally you are running dual complex reps.
the guy that said don't ADS is right also, don't ADS for more than 4-5 seconds at a time oustide of sniper, don't transfix on range targets if your set up for CQC- you are opening yourself up to being flanked each time you ADS |

Really awesome to see all the helpful advice for the newbros. :D
thee monky, my advice is to keep the same character. Deleting characters sets you back on SP, as a lot of SP is gained over time you've had the account. And SP is always growing! Also, Dropsuit Armor Upgrades and Dropsuit Shield Upgrades is like... the best two skills in the game to start out on. In total, they can grant you up to an additional 25% health, which makes not-dying a lot easier.

There is a lot of good advice here, so I will just say this.
If you get frustrated, take a break.
Make sure you have whatever character you use the most set up for Passive SP so that when the environment improves you will have a little more of a foundation to find some joy in the game.
I take many frequent breaks, and have 32 mil SP, and its very helpful to the sanity to take them.
Also, bear in mind CCP is looking towards making a meta (think item/weapon/module level) capped game mode, which will hopefully be much more new player friendly (though experienced players will still have tactical advantages and whatnot).

Any double entendre is unintended I assure you.

thee monk wrote:I have only just found and downloaded this awesome game, but I am getting disheartened at as soon as I leave the battle camp I don'tstand a chance aagainst 9/10 other players on here. it'd sad I know but after 3 new characters I still can't configure a good amour and weapon setup that givers me a chance. any help is appreciated. Don't sweat it and don't beat yourself up when you get stomped.
The game is designed to be 'not fair', it gives you a hill to climb when you first start out. CCP hasn't given the new player experience what it needs yet for reasons i won't get into - but if you like the game don't let that discourage you.
In this game a vet who rolls a new toon with a militia weapon/suit can fairly easily kill noobs in full proto(this was actually demonstrated in a tournament), not always of course but it's definitely doable, you just have to wait for good opportunities and protect yourself as much as you can - just remember you're squishy as hell and learn how to be a sneaky opportunistic kitteningbastard.
The primary advantage the vet has over the noob is knowledge of the game systems, and in Dust there are a lot of them: TACNET, ewar, equipment, classes, fitting, damage types, weapon systems, racial traits, installations, vehicles, maps, game mechanics and more......the biggest difference between the vet and the noob is knowledge of those system and how to use them to maximum advantage.
Your job as a new player is to learn those systems. Hold off on spending too many of your sp for a few weeks until you start to get a handle on things. Best way to do that is run with other peeps and get on voice - the Squad Finder tool in your Neocom is a good way to do that. It's gonna be rough out there, but if you stick with it in a couple of months your merc will be a lot more viable than it is right now. When you do decide which way/class/build you want to go for DO NOT spread out your skill points - stay 'laser focused' on one specific role, get it up to speed before branching out.
But it's definitely not too late to join, the game is designed so that power differences between vets and noobs equalize fairly quickly, over a period of 6 months to a year approximately. It goes fast at the beginning and slower at the end, after that you'll be training up your passive skills(very, very important) and branching out into other roles.
The reward for sticking with it is you'll end up with some hella good fights guaranteed.
One last word of warning: Dust is essentially still a beta test(it's a long, weird and awful story) so be careful what you $pend here. Not saying you shouldn't, just make sure you're informed before you dump a boatload of cash into the game.
That's it. Die well, merc. o7

Honestly it's not your fault, sadly a lot of the players "beating you" are really not that skilled. They mostly rely on Proto gear level, I only run standard scout with advanced weapons. Sometimes I'll use my adv minja and rarely will use my proto minja. Trust me if you learn how to stick to lower grade gear and win in fights. You'll stomp on people when using advanced gear. |

Firstly, too many corps have requirements, that make it impossible to allow new players to join. This is why I suggested joining Public corp channels.
Secondly, some corps encourage bad players behaviour, which is not something a new player should get into, as it will be a lot more frustrating than just playing normally.
Thirdly, and most importantly, so take note Thee Monk, DO NOT JOIN DUNA CORP!!!

These organisationd are created specifically to help the new player into the game. The people you'll find there are more then willing to guide you and answer any question you have. They can also supply you with a ton of information on any subject: suit roles, weapons, tactics, etc.
Als look in the Rookie Training Grounds on this forum. A lot of the articles you read there are created by people from the above organizations (and more).
For everything you read on this forum: Double check!!! There are a lot of pretenders on this forum (and in game) who will make you believe they know it all.
Read up, enjoy and spend your SP sparringly!!
Edit: And for the love of god... This is a co-op game. JOIN A SQUAD!! (Squad Finder is your friend)

Actually if you have created your character just before hotfix ECH'O, you should make a new character. The new Free Militia loadouts are a pretty good way to check different playstyles, and some of them won't be available when you have chreated your character before echo was introduced.
So as long as you are below 1-2 mil SP. I'd make a new char.

You'll have to spend some money if you want to catch up somewhat soonto the point of being able to run a decent advanced build. Get some AU and buy 1 or 3 day active boosters. Stay away from passives. They're not as efficient. Focus your playing time on the times when your boosters are active. Find a corp and tag along in squads. |
