So, I am jumping the gun a little, it's theoretically working but the idea is to create skin modules, that dynamically alter the skins, much like damage modifiers, treating colors like actual attributes. Currently, the dropsuits just reference a material instance that tells it what it should look like.
That means every dropsuit is unique, not a copy of a parent, which means when 32 dropsuits are fighting, there may be 32 unique dropsuits on the field, taking up memory.
The idea is to replace all colored variants with skin modules that look the same. That will allow us to "remove" dropsuit types from player inventories, and refund with modules and normal bpo's of the same type. No loss of utility or worth.
Thereby improving memory, decreasing clutter in dropsuit fittings, and allowing players to use the skin module on adv and proto suits as well.
I am just so excited about this, that I had to share with others than CPM. No promises though!
I can't stress enough that I like this idea. This was also the main reason I keep banging on the "tiericide the dropsuits!" drum.
Discuss.

So basically we would equip skin x to suit x for a colour scheme?.
If so i like it if it will save memory and so long as there's a new skin slot for every suit.
If this happens i would like a skin module from every suit i have. So off my sver logi suit i'd get a sver logi colour scheme module etc.
If i'm not gettinng it then let me know as i have had an early joint today lol.

Ah yeah breakin stuff, i am in Goon Brigade on the pc version of planetside 2. A fking amazing outfit and we do the equivalent to gangking but about 30-40 of us drop out of a galaxy and technically suicide gangk sunderers and stuff lol. Then we gangk bases, we are very tactical though and operate with around 4-5 full squads (about 40-50 persons).
It has no connection to eve though and after asking when i wanted to join, they mentioned that they are asked this a lot.

So basically this skin module would take a slot in a fitting and change the color scheme of the suit? This sounds like a good idea but it could potentially mess up fittings if players have to sacrifice a module to install the skin module. |

Just speculating of course, but I would not mind if a "skin module" can only be applied to one suite at a time. This would give a purpose of owning several "skins" of the same type. |

Lets hope you can pull it off! Combining all the BPOs that have all the same stats, give you a single BPO and then just all the skins that go with it, making it super easy to swap out the looks. Sounds like what everyone has wanted for years. My suggestion if you move forward with the skins, add in a way for insignia to be added to the skin as well, the aka corporation logo?

I believe their first goal is to reduce all the same suits (usually bpo varieties) to a single version of that suit and then just give you the various skins that you had bpos for. Skins become bpos to apply to all suits and then you still have base BPO and BPC suits for the stats.

This is an FPS and since people without SSDs can only see the Warbarge for about 1s you will almost never look at your char model for more than 5min, making ascetics and other skins pointless a pointless feature.
Surely the goal is to actually improve the game as opposed to making it 50 Shades of Gear, no?

Have suggested this multiple times. The nifty thing about a 'Skin' Slot is that it might ease up some of the games RAM use and fix a few memory issues while at the same time getting something like a 'Kaalakiota Assault Skin' would allow players (like me) who really enjoy [specific faction] to use that skin on all of their caldari assaults.
Would be nice to potentially have skin slots for ammunition too so you could say do [gamma frequency crystal] as a skin and it would modify the color of all lasers to be blue, or similar things with other weapons. It wouldn't have a mechanical effect but it would allow a bit more overlap between the eve and dust universes.

Unfortunately atiim, in a free to play game as much as we might hate it some dev attention needs to be focused on monetization - in particular intelligent monetization. There are all sorts of bad ways to do it and we have been very fortunate with many of the ways CCP has handled it as it has been INCREDIBLY fair and without paywalls. Having methods of monetization that don't make players resent their implementation is a ****ing great thing.
This strikes me as something closer to the paint schemes present in the mechlab of MWO, where once a paint is bought it is permanently unlocked. I also mentioned slightly earlier in this post that with these no longer being handled as 'seperate' suits by the games memory it might actually lead to some small performance optimizations of dust: Translated this means 'less lag for dying repeatedly and switching suits in research lab' and 'less time to spawn out at the start of a match'.

Also for those who have QUESTIONS:
Since Rattati does not even know if this whole endeavor is POSSIBLE or not.. it might be more wise to formulate your posts as requests rather than questions. More often that not, the answer is "I don't know, but we will try".
Just pointing out the obvious.
With that said.
I suggest this also applies to weapons ! Perhaps even separately? Example: Quafe Nova Knives on a Corporation Colored dropsuit, or Quafe Dropsuit with normal skinned weapons. This whole idea has to deal with the fact that with the advent of quafe weapons, there needs to be a way for people to keep the look of their current weapons and not lose it to the color pattern of the dropsuit. |

This sounds like something that could seriously improve overall performance. Storing 32 models plus all vehicle models sounds like a serious waste of ram and that is before you consider the environment.
I also have to wonder if the uniform models would help in hit detection as the system would no longer be working off of a bunch of suits' hit boxes. |

Yea, I thought of this as a way to do BPO monetization in Legion. Just have one suit, one vehicle, etc. but skins applied (possibly to the manufacturing process?), and then people could make skins and sell them on the market, so not only is it the suit, it's which design looks the best as well.

Have separate MODELS for each specialization?
E.G. Basic Minmatar Light has a folded piece of metal on their left shoulder, to signify they are "Tankier" than the specialization, while the Scout has the current model?
Minmatar Logi having a bigger/more prominent belt/pouch? Assault having a bigger backpack and/or more shoulder plates?
I hate how ATM i have to memorize each specialization's VARIOUS skins to see "Oh that's a NOMAD, and not a SHAMAN." Or to see that someone is using the "Thale" gallente light and not some other type... like iunno, an OFFICER?
Sure I can expect to see this, if at all, way in the future, but if you could just give me a *nods* or *Stares menacingly* I'd be very appreciative.

For educational purposes, medium slots in dust 514 are called hi slots. Observe the markers on the slots while fitting. Taken directly from eve, a single dash marks a low slot (like armor) a double dash is a medium slot (like shields), and 3 dashes making a triangle is a high slot (weapons and equipment incl guns, bombs, reppers, salvagers, drone bays, scanner probe launchers, etc) so a medium slot is in dust similar(identical) to the one in eve, but we call them hi slots

I'd suggest a skin called "Corporation standard" which sets the drop suit to the colors of the corporation, separately chosen from a limited availability color palette.
This presents a huge monetization opportunity. Limit the available shades and colors available to corporations, giving them all an opportunity to outbid each other for the most popular colors, i.e. most probably "black."
Figure out the Aurum to Isk exchange rate, sell Isk for Aurum, and let the bidding begin. Every month the corporate colors can come back up on the auction block for a three day auction. Is your corp profitable enough to keep its colors, or will you spend Aurum to keep them?
The real question is, which day of the month do you want your your Aurum sales to spike?
