Not once when i was a new player did i worry about having to get that 50k ISK to buy my shield upgrades book...
I doubt people are running to strongboxes in hopes of getting that skill book they need.

Let 'em drop the likes of role or proficiency books (if they do already, nobody's seen them yet afaik) and let all books be resold for full value and we're in business. Heck, let them drop skill LEVELS. That'd be a bigger deal to vets and new players alike.

Make everyone happy and give ISK in the boxes instead of skillbook. A lot of new players will buy this skillbook far before they get keys and the looted skillbook (if get a skillbook of course).

what you should think about is making different tier boxes. the boxes that we get as loot drops should be be tiered according to our SP. so vets dont get boxes with noob items and skill books.
it devalues the boxes as a whole when noobs get items they can not use, and vets get items they do not want.

Seriously. You know what would be more useful to the new player? BETTER payouts in pubs, BETTER salvage and actually valuable content in strongboxes... then they could definitely afford to buy any skillbook they want, WHEN THEY WANT AND NEED IT. If there is, in fact, anyone out there who does struggle to buy those, I guess.
"not all keys are AUR keys" you can use that argument once the key drop rate is adjusted to something resembling reasonable, and most of the missions that award keys don't also require aur. I have gotten 1 key a week on average from missions, not a single one as a loot drop. In contrast to well over 1k strongboxes. With that rate, I am supposed to "care for the new player" when not a single one of the boxes I have opened has contained anything remotely useful to me, and exactly one contained something that may have value if player trading ever happens. What a joke.
Have you considered installing the improved keyboard?

May I suggest staggering drops to be slightly more relevant to skill level? For example, phase out certain drops the higher the SP of the player, in this case light operation 1

Why not just replace the skillbooks with Isk? Even then a 1/1000 chance of getting 1 skillbook out of over 100?
Maths allows me to estimate not one ******* new player is buying/using keys in the hope of getting a ******* skillbook.
Keys should be Proto (Aur) and officer weapons. (make them rarer/dearer)

My apologies rattati as I know you're already getting blasted for this, but strong boxes as they are, are utter crap.
This is a poor defense of having strong boxes have random and utterly worthless junk in them. They are seldom worth the items contained inside and if I was getting skill books for basic skills I might not even want inside after paying aur for keys I'd be incredibly angry as a customer.

For the record, I know a guy woh started Dust early Dec 2014 who grinded an Apex suit. Lost battles usually so it was slow going as he is a solo player with like 4 mill SP, but he did do it. Just takes Patience and Time (and invisibility.) |

How much ISK/Skill points do new players really have to spend to unlock a skillbook, versus the time it might take them to get a key?
If helping new players is the idea, making no-squad public matches would help prevent them from being proto stomped into the ground and quitting the game. Just an idea. |

I got that too. With my 6 I have used 2 boxes, 51 pagination hackers, Type II defender Caldari, Type II Defender Gallente, 1 day active booster, and one other not useful thing... I want my key back for the 2 boxes I got that is worthless.

Rattati... Really? That skillbook is what 100k isk maybe fairly negligible even to a new player. Don't patronize the people that give you a paycheck. Thats Bad business. If there was legitimate npe then yes you would have a point... But there isn't. Your community has offered solutions that you haven't delivered on. The only people that will shovel money at this game is your closed beta vets that keep crawling back so recognize your focus group and tend to them and your player retention rates will be stable. |

If you wanted to introduce these strongboxes, give players an incentive to make sure they have keys to open the boxes. Don't put basic or standard level gear in the boxes. Ever. Have it so the boxes contain at minimum advanced level and upward of suits, weapons and equipment.
It just feels as if the regular salvage system was put behind a paywall. Another feature implemented with a quick band-aid fix.
The slow blade penetrates the shield.

You can't be this dense? Are you that separated from the facts of why players spend money on a f2p game?
Why would even a new player spend money on keys so they can open a box.... and then sit there praying that they get the skillbook they need randomly?
Why would you screw over one of the most essential enjoyment aspects of character progression as earning your isk to buy a skill and unlock something?
You screw over the game in two different ways.
Seriously, if your gonna spend over half a year developing features to monetize a f2p game... Go do the freaking homework of why people spend money on f2p games...
There are hundreds of university level studies done on games like League of Legends, who offer no P2w aspect... but make ridiculous sales per customer on just vanity items.
CCP and the playerbase is getting screwed over by the lack of education around creating content around a f2p model.

Ive got the quafe sniper and swarm launcher so far, not in the rad color schemes yet though :( but, out of 70 keys, ive recieved the 2 aforementioned bpos, and an variety of officer weapons, only 1- 4 at a time, and once was militia gear. All in all, im happy, maybe im just lucky. Also, are people forgeting that you can indeed sell everything you get in strong boxes, including skill books? Cuz im pretty sure I made 2mil+ with my salvage

Why not take off Skillbooks from strongbox and let this as Salvage in Academy? (like voidfaction said)
Also, why not change the Code Research Center with one of the already launched Centers? Maybe the Battle Statistics Center (and Pushing it to the 4th Level)?
Maybe this could work:
Lvl1: 1 Key/Day
Lvl2: 2 Keys/Day
Lvl3: 4 Keys/Day
Lvl4: 6 Keys/Day
Lvl5: 8 Keys/Day
(Maybe less/Day, dunno..)
Is hard to get Keys from missions and from salvage (sadly).
Also, if the keys were easier to get/more frequent, would, really, be everyone so mad with all the "prizes"? |

Unless you can generically give out skillbooks (as in good for one skill book of any skill etc.), there is no guarantee that even the new people will not get duplicates.
I think the intentions were good, but I don't know that they were terribly effective, or that the troubles will ultimately be worth it.
Then again, I have no real idea of how many new people we have coming in and out of the game to have some idea of how significant that problem might be.

When I think "rare" and "valuable" I think things that cost actual money to buy. If it is something I would have merely spent time to earn in game, then it is not "rare". When I pay real money for a "key" to unlock a box I expect something "rare" and "valuable".
Skill books do not qualify as rare or valuable as they are something I can earn in game just by playing.
Its nice when I can get a freebie key, but it does feel like a knee to the groin when I get something 'common'. |
