I don't like this proposal, for two reasons.
First, one of the biggest assets of this game is the skilltree, and new players want to skill into shiny stuff. If these things become irrelevant for the only gamemode they can play, that would be a bummer.
Secondly, not the suits, but teamwork is op.
I would propose something different, make a new gamemode for everybody that has lesss then 10mil sp. These would be high sec battles and obviously much easier on the noobs. It would probably feel more like the beginning of this game (closed beta anybody) so that everybody can get used to the flow.
This gamemode would be available after academy, and until one hit's the skill cap (10mil might be too much on second thought).
After they graduated from high sec, they would be ready for the protobears (more or less).

In my proposal the only thing they miss is the Suit bonuses. All Weaponry and Upgrades skills would still apply so not irrelevant
While the 3 mil saving for a Proto suit can be delayed while they run test fits in a MLT server So the skills apply but they have some playtime before having to decide which large investment would be their own preference and could help in saving new mercs from bad choices..
Innapropriate Irrelevence...
Welcome to the Dust Forum, hang around to see why everyone else left :/

If anything it's better guidance for newberries to be steered into skilling DSUpgrades tree/Cores first than skilling "shiny stuff". Truth is, as many newberries frustratingly learn, without substantial investment into DSUpgrades all that proto gear winds up being a waste when the suit can't be fitted or the tank is still short compared to ACTUAL protos.
And I don't think the idea is as an " only" option for newbs/vets, I think its supposed to be an additional gamemode option. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And besides, now that basically everything is available in a MIL variant, a MIL only mode would serve well as the long requested "test server/training mode".

Doesn't that undo everything that is New Eden? Grant it, the proto folks kill newer players but isn't this the place where HTFU is a motto? We can't shelter them for long.
Keeping people separated does nothing to enhance skill. I think we are dealing with a problem that can only fix itself. The more we tamper, the more segregate and the more we damage the game itself.
They have to learn sometime. The truth is, we got a bunch of kids playing now and if they haven't thought about joining a corporation, checking out the forums looking for the Immortal Guides, Dust uni, and really dissecting what they are doing wrong, they are never going to learn.
Creating a MLT server won't help them. I got my butt whooped in my first brawl. But its what I learned from that lost and the others that taught me how to fight.

I agree that no one can be or even deserves to be endlessly coddled however doesn't New Eden provide a certain amount of constant relative "safety" with its HighSec/LowSec layout? (bear in mind I do not EVE)

- Balance - NO matter what balancing you do nothing changes that some mercs can one-man-army the enemy teams due to poor balancing and who gets the better side of map, you can't change this Some mercs have the genuine skill to go 20/0 or better in most games, 50/0 Vs MLT N00bs.
So what do we do then? nerf skill ?
Thats hardly an option unless you want the game to be NerfBat514, which is not an option. The answer is here among us since Delta deployed the question is will CCP Rattati act upon this chance?
-Militia Tier Servers- We have a full line of gear to use in them, and we all know it is a needed feature to retain some new players We could see this deploy by Echo if enough players step up and ask for it to be done... DO IT !!!
(I will stray for one moment- MLT frame-See MLT Matari BPO) If all MLT frames had crappy stats (oh, what luck! they do) it would be possible to add 2 EQ slots to All of the MLT Medium frames and then you have low module slots, low stats, 2EQ slots on all of them
Back on Track So the MLT server has an option for all roles to join in (with MLT gear) and enjoy a game Certain penalties must be used for the MLT server such as less ISK and maybe less SP This would discourage the cowards of our playerbase using it as a safe haven to farm MLT
So we have the tools to get this done. Can CCP clarify if this is going to be looked at??? And there is no use saying 'If, But, When, Maybe'' THIS IS NEEDED NOW !!!!! Or you run the risk of losing even more mercs as they stress at fighting proto every day they log in Not all guns are viable without their suits for example ..i could never run lr in this mode as lr sucks without an amar bonus It's a poor workman who blames his tools. I ran the LR before the Amarr bonus and still do on my Amarr logi. You just have to be more disciplined if you are going to be proficient at the LR without the bonus. |

A all militia arena would just be abused by mediocre players to farm new players... not that I think that anyone has anymore skill than the ability to grind in this game there are things to learn like map hot spots, where snipers sit, and a number of other things; you can't flank someone if you don't know a path to do it. Skill really just depends on what suit you use scout < sent < commando < assault; I didn't put logi in there because they are not a combat role. Of course the viability of each suit is qualitative in respect to kills i.e., Them Skillz *****.
It didn't taste like abortion.?.?.

Can we once and for all put this crappy argument to rest? This argument gets brought up all the time in these kind of discussions, and it's time to put two in it's damn skull. Of course suits matter, they always matter, if they didn't matter, you wouldn't see anybody wearing them. Proto gives an actual calculable advantage to the player, and this advantage is separate from player skill. If suits don't matter, then why do protostompers use them exclusively?
There's two issues here -- the advantage that using a proto suit provides, and the advantage of a tight squad using teamwork provides, and we need to stop conflating the two.
For new mercs, having a Mil-only game mode removes a portion (not all) of the hard mathematical advantage that a vet has against the noob, thereby making this game mode more forgiving to the new player, who will hopefully stick around long enough to become a vet in his own right. It is true that vets will still have the advantage, but that's ok, because it's only the advantage of experience which can be learned, not the disadvantage of being outgeared.
For old mercs, having a Mil-only gear mode is an opportunity to test, to help newbros, to develop strategy, and most importantly, to murder other vets on more-or-less equal footing, since most level advantages would be negated, and those passive advantages that aren't, all vets already have anyway. And yes, I know that's what PC is for, but not everybody has the time/opportunity/inclination to play that, and a mil-only mode would allow this to happen anytime, not just when PC fights happen.
Personally, I'm not aiming to make Dust less brutal -- we just need to immerse the noobs more slowly into it, so they stick around longer. This Mil-only gear mode, I fully expect it to still be hell on noobs due to vet experience, and that's fine. It just needs to be less brutal than now, so that it stops driving the right players away from the game.
Call it 'Brutal Light' -- 50% less groin-stomping goodness of the regular flavor, but same great taste (of blood in your mouth)!
