Here we go again. Everything is happening again. before FanFest 2014 where were dead silence from devs and CPM and BAM! - Dust is dead, we were working on new project. After that we got all back, with full devs and CPM support... for a while. Where our promised progression dev blog? And other dev blogs to Legion? Awesome news? Bad news? Any news?
And now they are again in silence. What are they doing? They are still working 5 days in a week. It's a business - they have to. But the question is on what they are working? Dust? Legion? New project? Incarna?
Did Project Legion did not got green light?
And the other question - WHEN they will tell us on what project they are working. If CCP is working again on infamous NDA, at least maybe you can tell us when NDA is lifting off, and you can tell us on what you were working?
I hope it will not be FanFest 2015 and the message be "Legion is in the past, we are working on a new project"
I support EVE Legion, but the message was very badly delivered...

Back to the main topic. Everyone is wondering what the hell is going on with Legion. DEVs were unsilenced and discussed Legion freely. Now they are silent again. One cannot help but speculate something has gone awry.

I think the projects dead in the water, the dont have the funds or the staff to pull of an exchangeing shooter, sadly they missed the window. Odds are all resources are being thrown into valk. Thats a non risk win.
Legion will have to fight with rainbow six, destiny, and devision they just wont get anywhere in that kind of market

Its been just over a month since the last actual real update. A month... take a mild chill pill.
IF legion is dead, which i doubt, you will prolly know around eve vegas, in 2 months.
TBH they are prolly working on something, they got quite at fan fest cause they were working on something. But honestly, chill. You want to know how many updates Valk has made about there actual progress since fan fest? 0. A dev talks on the forums but no real updates. Relax a bit. They will inform when they are ready, just go back to playing dust or whatever other game you play in the mean time.
And IF its dead then meh. point is you can;t do anything about it so why worry? |

The reason that they are silent is most likely because corprate has told them not to leak anything before the green light, as it would be a HUGE hit to their fanbase if they kept a blog and then one day it was like "whoop upper management cancelled this project, sorry".

The tin foil is so very, very real.
Likely we haven't heard anything about Legion for awhile because of a double whammy of:
(1) CCP dissolved their Dust specific community department and let go some of our best community managers in the process. This was a business decision, but basically the only community manager from whom I get the vibe that he really cares about Dust is...Logibro. For the last while Logibro has probably been very busy making arrangements for the CPM elections, and likely has time absorbed by Eve-related tasks as well.
The only other community rep I ever see posting Dust related stuff is Falcon, and it always seems like he's doing that out obligation rather than desire.
(2) They legit don't have that much to say. As mentioned, CCP just let go quite a few staff members. They announced who remained out of the community team because we'd be able to figure that out anyways. The development team? Not so much. There's no way of knowing how many devs Shanghai lost, and no way that CCP are going to release those numbers to us. The CPM probably know, so that's interesting. In this interview, before the layoffs, Atli said that Shanghai had approximately 60 developers. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/05/03/project-legion-eve-online-preview-interview/ . That number has probably shrunk. That means there are fewer people producing news that can be delivered to the community, fewer people to facilitate delivering that news, and probably more work per person to do internally.
Legion is the most back-burner of back-burner projects out of CCP's New Eden games. Valkyrie has buzz, it could be their next money spinner. Eve is potentially a bit stagnant at the moment, but it's nowhere near dead. Legion? Legion is a dream in a few people's heads- an attempt to salvage sunk costs from ruining Dust with bad decisions for two straight years. Don't be surprised if news is extremely slow about Legion until Valkyrie gets into people's hands.
That being said, the tin-foil about them not making it is absurd. If that were the case, they wouldn't have obligated themselves to flying 7 CPM members to China for practically no return on that value for CCP.

You're right, their under no explicit obligation as far as I'm aware. I don't think they agree to a contract with the CxM members despite there being an NDA involved. That being said, there's no way they're going to sign up a CPM, put resources into holding elections, take their volunteer hours, deal with interacting with them, and then they're going to pull a Lannister and not fly them out to Shanghai in several months.
For a company in a slump like CCP, it's not okay to do things like that. Any more significant PR blunders that end up being public-facing (such as screwing over the people involved in one of their most-cited PR points) just aren't tenable at the moment.
I now sell tin foil wholesale. We even do installation for your whole house.

PS3 itself is dying, DUST is optimized for the PS3, so that code is going to be nasty for other things, ergo you must salvage your assets and get with the times.
I also like how you refer to the failure of legion in the past tense, just wait for Vegas, then you will know. They can't not talk about it.

It's frustrating. But you have to remember that CCP has destroyed a lot of goodwill with the community through making big promises and not delivering. So maybe, just maybe, they have learned their lesson.

I'd say that failure to deliver on those promises potentially came from 2 things:
1. A lack of familiarity with developing under console constraints, and not using their in-house engine.
This is completely reasonable and understandable.
During Fanfest, some devs were regularly stating how they would make certain changes to cope with the PS3's limited capacities. Or how they had to take more time coding new tools to work within the Unreal engine, because it simply didn't come with the tools they needed. For example, they have a lot of maps developed that they can't release, because they have to stay within a budget on hard drive space (and let's be honest, most PlayStation owners have no clue how to upgrade and reformat their PS3 hard drives).
2. Someone felt that developing Dust on the aged PS3 was a good idea, and disregarded all advice from people in his team to the contrary, as pedantic.
This is just speculation, of course. Forbes contributer Kathy Caprino helps employees have a good perspective on such bosses. To the boss narcissist's credit though, I'll say this... "If Dust514 was a PS3 LAUNCH game, then your idea would have been ahead of the curve. People coming from PS2 games to Dust, would have been amazed with it. Your timing was simply bad."
If CCP Shanghai stays focused on Legion 'like a weak laser rifle', and they deliver on making Legion play the way Dust was envisioned... they will NOT fail. Legion would very well be the game that infuses the EVE universe with the injection of ground players that they want. As long as they remember the VISION.
I still find that E3 trailer more appealing than Destiny or Star Citizen. All this time later, and there's still nothing like it. smh

Actually CCP have a long history of promising lots and delivering less even on the PC. EVE's history is full of examples. My personal suspicion is that it has more to do with the way CCP is run as an organisation that any technical limitation (though they exist too)
In any case. The only way we can judge CCP is by what they actually deliver ...

The only two things I can think of that CCP really, truly dropped the ball on Was Walking in Stations and Monoclegate, which we're both the Incarna release (IIRC)
Sure, they've had some other, ahem, technical issues (Boot.ini) but straight up wiffing a slow pitch soft ball over the plate, I can't think of others other than the 2 listed above. |

yeah, Ccp will surely deliver....
one day....
maybe another day....
okay, sorry it had to be delayed.....
.........
......
soon.....
soon(tm)......
sorry we had to cancel the project not because of hardware limitations but because of limitations within our development team, but hey we kind of maybe have an idea how this new project probably maybe one day will pay out like the dream game we all envisioned for dust. Just on case it gets grrenlit, which is not quiet sure right now, or in a couple of momths. maybe you wont hear a long time from us, but maybe we actually do something or maybe not. But hey dust ist still kindof running I guess, or maybe not, we will see.
Dust was a nice idea, starting the project on ps3 while it was in its ending cicle was plain stupid. Promising and not deliviring was also stupid. The whole Ff presentations should be taken and used as showcase material on advertisement schools to show how to NOT deal with your customer base. And once again:Silence.
Ccp screwed up Dust and definately will screw up legion. even IF they are working non stop on legion, their great ideas womt pay out. They already said Legion will not start eith eve connection which was the biggest selling factor on dust. So all this ideas Ccp has or had for Dust are now not anymore in a "universe" they are in a stand alone game. But its gonna be awesome! Its gonna have Pve and Pvp, and cool scifi stuff....
But wait, isnt there a game which is not only "envisioned" and dreamt of coming out on 9/9 with exactly this? oh and wait? its also getting released on the limited ps3? oh well, too bad :(
My whole point is simple: ccp screwed up, and they will once again with legion. And while ccp envisions their new project other companies are out there and RELEASING awesome games. Games with similiar ideas, which are not buggy as f*ck. Ccp had the chance to bring Dust to something awesome. I'm pretty sure Sony would not have denied Dust enterimg the Ps4 which is much less limited, but instead they backed off to start all over again. All the ideas they have NOW, are done in other games, and when ccp one day will show up with legion, nobody will care anout it anymore since all this new content is already old again.
its a sad story, Imwould really loved to see dust grow, but I just lost all hopemin ccp, not because of the constant screw ups they delivered with dust, not because of this god awful presentation on ff, but because they are already screwing up with legion again. The community asked for a transparent development process since day one for Dust. Legion was their chance to do everything rigjht. Get int ouch, blogs, screenshots, videos, vlogs, but instead we once again get silence.
To me thats a clear sign that ccp clearly doesnt care about their community, so why should we care about them anymore? Other mothers (devs) habe pretty daughters (games) too, so why wait till ccp finally gets their ass up to deliver?

sorry we had to cancel the project not because of hardware limitations but because of limitations within our development team, but hey we kind of maybe have an idea how this new project probably maybe one day will pay out like the dream game we all envisioned for dust.

Personally, and this is just a guess, CCP is busily trying to figure out how they're going to weather the next 3 years and stay afloat.

Your controller will work with a PC (USB for the win!); mac support likely won't appear until an update after launch; and spec requirements will likely be between 6.7 - 9 on the universal scale of computer hardness.

While a controller will work with the PC, it's unlikely to be an effective way of playing Legion, assuming Legion gets made at all. |

Do you think CCP should follow star citizens approach where players have lots of access to information on stuff in progress. I know that such an approach can potentially create problems in regards to players perceived entitlement and expectations (especially if they don't deliver on promises) but in practice it doesn't seem to have hurt their ability to rake in the cash. |

I think Star Citizen's approach might be a bit too far. And I think the high expectations Star Citizen has set is going to bite them badly in the rear come release time. I've given them way too much money personally, but I think that's a train wreck in the making, just watch. They may be making a ton of cash now, but when the realities set in, I think they're going to burn a lot of customers, really the same way people have felt burned by DUST.
(Sidebar: Elite Dangerous devs were selling a "premium beta" as opposed to the "normal beta", which I feel is the highest tier of doucheiness you can get. I don't care how good the game is, I will not give them money, they make EA look like the patron saint of customer service.)
What I'd like to see from the Legion development is a periodic tidbit (like weekly) of something they're currently working on. A screenshot or a little factoid, or whatever.

I think the whole lack of responses are based on
1.) A reorganization is in process at CCP games. I feel that is fine as it will bring the Eve Universe 100% to the PC.
2.) The teams are very busy and are under a silent development order at this time.
===========================================================================================
Now as far as Dust 514 players feeling a bit down. I can understand that but come over to the PC world. I promise we will take care of you. Eve University is a great place to start.
But I would argue that this is truly a passionate community. Making a game for the mainstream with the Eve Universe is a mistake. We are here because CCP games represent the individual who wants a hardcore gaming experience. That is what Eve Online is. That is what stands us apart from the typical games we see. There is nothing wrong with a niche audience. We want to be leet and special compared to all the fads and trends. That is why Eve Online is still going.

Legion paid Beta confirmed
Seriously though. As a minimum I would like CCP to announce how they are going to transition from Dust to Legion. If they do it right and did something similar to guild wars 1's hall of heroes - where achievements in the first game unlocked bonuses in the second - then not only would they give players something to work towards prior to legions launch, but it would give Dust a continued reason to exist after legion has landed. |
