My feeling is that this is a problem with human nature.
You could power up sniping and that would help with the competitive game, but it would encourage player laziness in pubs as seen here.
As the vast majority of games ARE pubs, is it not better to simply throw the role of sniping under the bus for the time being?
The only real fix I see is that if one team is displaying such incredible levels of incompetence, games need to end faster. |

You make some excellent points. Counter sniping is rare. Just doesn't happen enough.
The people who do snipe are 80% blues. The other 20% know what they're doing.
To the other 20% o/ (who actually help the team, like sniping a point the whole game. Keeping it unhacked)
Been fighting this war since beta. When can I go home and see my family again? Will I survive this brutality? :)

I think sniping is for gimps.
Lately, I've been squadding up and realized that a LOT of children play Dust 514, and a LOT of adolescents and adults simply don't have the skills to compete on the battlefield so they choose sniping.
My plea to you: If you're going to troll snipers, please troll the enemy snipers, not friendlies.
But still, what you did is awesome!

Watch it again. I clearly say the poor map design has not left many good spots and that snipers are forced into bad spots and this is not their fault. But seven guys sniping from a roof ignoring the snipers that even the ground troops managed to spot?

Children may not have any depth of insight into the game, such as the constraints of team resources during battle. They may play from an entirely subjective perspective without an objective overview of what is happening on the field and how they may best contribute to a victory. There is nothing wrong with playing for fun and getting what you want out of the game without regard to anyone else's welfare. The battlefield is punishing enough. If judge wants to punish them further for their actions that is a corrective action made under a set of morals which those subject to it may not share. In other words, anybody can do whatever the hell they want. There is no established code of conduct.
That said, Judge can do whatever the hell he wants, hence my plea, derived from strategic insight not to waste other team members' time, despite of how insignificant their contribution may look to me.

Have you actually used any of these sniping spots yourself? How easily do you think they could have truly spotted the other party? You only spotted them because you got close enough for your Passive scanners to pick them up. Then again, the other team would have needed a dropship to get up there, which would have been pretty hard to ignore really... Mmm... Unless they were there first, then the allies positioned at the top of the tower.
And, yes, you state that snipers have few locations to shoot from, then complain that because they're using one of those locations that happens to be the best one from all the options, that they are suddenly douches. Double standard it is.

I would loved to have been on the other team counter sniping, I can hear the headshots
This first rule of sniping is you do it solo, if someone tries to snipe in the same place as you, you move on. Assume they're an idiot who's about to give away your position through links, hives or spamming shots |

The starter fits are partly to blame - the game is won with scouts, heavies and logis, the starter fits don't include any of these fits so beginners are lead to believe the roles are assault, medic, sniper and AV (all in assualt suits). The sniper starter fit is the only starter suit that can offer any kind of opportunity for a noob to get a kill or two and the only way to protect your kdr until your skills are more viable against the kinds of opponents meet on the battlefield.

May I say a word?
All of those snipers on the spire in the city were terrible.
It's generally an unspoken rule that you just don't snipe next to another player.
It draws attention to your location and thereby making you ineffective.
I support your wise decision in scraping them off the building.
You weren't even trolling to be honest. You did the team a favor.
(I haven't seen something that stupid in awhile, at least not on American servers.)
You've earned much credit when it comes to Swarm Launchers and Attack Drop Ships. Countless hours of first hand experience I'm sure. If you would ever begin to attempt a change in the way sniping is done in Dust 514, please consult with those who've done it most.

It doesn't really make any sense to me. I snipe probably about 70% of my matches and i always look for snipers first and then throughout the match.
1. They are the biggest threat to me. 2. A stationary target is the easiest kill on the field.
There is really no reason not to look for them, just scan once then keep an eye on the kill feed. I don't even put uplinks either, i'm pretty sure most decent snipers don't use them because that would mean your expecting to be found and killed anyway. |

side note:
- Snipers get hate because it's personal.
You focus a target and prevent them from being combat effective. Sometimes you repeat this on particular targets of interest. The range of responses you'll receive varies. A snipers inbox is often a treasure trove of hilarious hate mail.
- Snipers get hate because it's a starter fit.
New players will spawn with a sniper rifle and head straight for the hills. Someone with no experience is likely to do the same thing as well. They have no developed skill, and almost no clue. They're ineffective and annoying at best. This helps to warp the general view of the role into something negative.
- Snipers get hate because of poor map design.
Sometimes the best sniping location is in the red line. This cannot be helped. It could be a tall building, a mountain, or the MCC itself. However, chaining a bunch of kills together from 450-550 is time consuming, difficult, and less effective generally. (this is why sniper rifle ranges should not be shorter, bad map design) If given the option though I prefer the risk / reward of a more forward position to snipe from. It requires more skill and effort. You need to get posted, often at the cost of losing a drop ship every single match, and be ready to defend yourself from incoming threats that may try and dislodge you. Many opt for the safety of the red line, but again ineffectiveness is often their reward.
- Snipers get hate because it's not what most people do.
The bread and butter of Dust 514 consists of meat grinding infantry. As a sniper you're removed from that, and people feel cheated of an opportunity to kill you because you're not directly in front of them. This generates hatred of the role. If you don't snipe, you generally hate snipers. Rightfully so! Use cover and never stop moving you lazy idiots!

I doubt any of them were in team chat. The default for voice chat is "off" last I checked.
Basically, if they're outside of your communication bubble the phrase "my team told me" sums up how out-of-touch you are with what was going on in the battle. It holds no merit because the reporting teammates were checking a range of points that are occupied about 60% of the time, while the snipers would have been asked to look down a range that is co-occupied about 2% of the time.
You have to think these kinds of things through logically.

I've only seen a few of your videos, mostly ones about tanks during the redline rail spamathon... But god damn this is brilliant.
Sometimes you've got to be bad to be good, but you totally ignored the enemy snipers while trolling your own team, lol... I'm assuming you got them eventually.
I'll be honest I have sometimes done this to idiots... Another good one is people that try to afk outside the mcc, you can just push them into the red zone (with enough time to waste.)
I'll give you 8/10 for this, 10/10 would have been possible had you scooped one of your snipers next to theirs, lol. |
