Upgrading- Before choosing to upgrade your weapons or equipment to a new tier check to see if your current dropsuit has enough pg/cpu. as you may need to upgrade your dropsuit first,
upgrading core skills will allow for more options/survival ability for all suits.
There are no respec options so think carefully- try out militia variants and fw loyalty store variants before using sp.
Find your role- finding the way to play that you will enjoy is tricky but essential to becoming good at it. (if you enjoy killing with a hmg then being a scout is not for you) |

- You should always maintain some way to defend yourself from other infantry at short to medium range with your dropsuit fitting.
For example, If you have only one weapon slot (logistics), it is not a good idea to equip a specialized weapon such as a sniper rifle or swarm launcher, because you cannot protect yourself if an enemy gets close to you. If you want to use these specialized support weapons, use a suit with a sidearm such as a SMG or pistol, or use a Commando dropsuit with some type of general purpose weapon as backup.
I still sometimes see people wearing proto gear that cannot seem to understand this simple concept |

Stray away from the painfully obvious tips. Anybody trying your game will already know them. Loading tips that say things like "Grenades are timed explosives that damage in a radius upon detonation!" will help no one. The grenade launcher example listed in the OP is particularly contentious because it makes reference to "real life", which is an immersion no-no. Don't want people thinking about real life grenade launchers while they're playing a scifi first person shooter.
A lot of the tips listed in this thread are good. They're the ones that occupy the space between being things that everyone knows and being too specific. Things like "HAVs have weak spots that are more vulnerable to damage." are great. Maybe throw in the age-old "Don't use what you can't afford to lose" would work, although I guess Don't Buy works better considering you can't sell items in Dust anyways.

"Dont play until you hit 15 Mio SP passively. Then dont skill into anything until you've read 5 different Dust Skill-Guides."
But seriously: Dust is too complicated for simple Tips that are not absurd simplicities (like "grenades explode"), I think. The best (and most fun) way to learn is by trial and error. Dust, sadly, will be a series of errors for the first 3 months.
So the only Tip that remains is more a word of warning (which can be a valuable tip too): "Team up with the best you can find and be willing to invest heavily in time. Dust is not intended as a Casual game. So come get some, if you dare."
The answer to your complaint is PvE. Always.

CCP Rattati wrote:4) Weapon: The Laser Rifle fires a continuous beam that increases in damage over time, but overheats Someone may have already pointed it out, but you'll definitely want to mention the fact that the laser rifle's damage decreases as you get closer to your target (starting at 80-90 meters, I think? Maybe even shorter. I can't remember).
The number of new players that have ran towards me firing their laser rifle at less than 20 meters is just staggering. I've tried to help them individually by sending them mail about how the LR works, but one measly clone can only do so much... |

As a new player (who loves the game btw) it's taken me about 2 months and 3.6M SP (ADS) + 2.0M SP (Try all light and heavy weapons) + 1.4M SP (Amarr Assault) just to figure out how I like to play, how to kill most things at least occasionally (I still cannot solo kill a Sentinel with a rifle!!!), and how to die a lot.
I really wanted to be my vision of an assault, which was to burst through a door guns blazing... and died a lot trying in medium suits. I now mostly run militia and standard Minmatar and Caldari light suits with some heavy suits for extra eHP in certain situations.
Some things I've learned: Every suit / vehicle has something that is good at killing it. Everything is very good at killing militia suits - particularly those that are alone. Don't stop moving. Strafe - show video of effective strafe techniques. Hide behind cover. Peek out to shoot. Find your next piece of cover and run to it - yes, even if there isn't anyone there. Sentinels should be considered invulnerable to your rifle. Turn around. Do it again. Tacnet is only effective on light suits. HAVs, LAVs, and other drop suits will sneak up on you. Turn around and look. Listen - if you hear a vehicle and it's not on tacnet it's the enemy. Get a mic, it's really worth it. In ambush always bleed out - think about how you were killed - if the spawn was camped wait a little before spawning in again. Setting your ADS sensitivity to 0 can help you learn to aim if you have trouble targeting. Turn it up in increments of 5 when you are successfully targeting enemy clones. Faction warfare earns loyalty points that allow you to obtain better gear that has lower skill requirements.
Watching videos of good players is much more helpful than reading tactics for me. Link videos from very good players showing how to effectively use each weapon (Destructive data mining winners?), how to drive vehicles, etc.
Make finding people easier. Maybe have a few public channels that are pre-set-up with different themes? Possibly Corp recruitment and Instruction. I have found a few people to play with, but this requires a significant bit of time that I'd rather spend playing. Many of the squad finder listings have names that put me off. Award WP or some other bonus for adding squad-less people in a game. Or automatically create squads of the squad-less. Anything to make it easier to be a team.
Thoughts on battle academy: I went through 3 times and the 2nd two times I tried not to earn WP. I practiced flying. I practiced aiming at heads. I practiced strafing. The tutorials should be spaced out a little more. Run several battles - earn X WP or kill Y clones. Create a fitting with a new weapon and dropsuit type. Add a tutorial on running a squad and using the squad commands. Add other achievements (even in a suggested text list with no rewards: Kill X clones with Y gun. Have X clones spawn from your uplink. Earn X WP from triage. Revive and fully repair the armor on X clones (requires 2 equip slots). Kill X cloaked clones (may not be many cloaks in battle academy). Land a dropship on top of a building. Land a dropship on a clone. Run over X clones with a LAV. Earn X WP damaging vehicles with each AV weapon. Kill X clones with a grenade. Consider locking parts of the skill table or limiting the possible level until graduation.
Possible other graduation criteria: Joined a corp. Consistently in the the top 4 spots (and/or avg > 4 K/D or 2000 WP/game over last 6 games [?? Not sure what the right numbers are, but I feel they should be relatively high to indicate that they are better than the newest starting players]). Option to enter and leave under X SP.
P.S. If the star map does anything other than look cool it should say somewhere.

I would like to request your assistance in coming up with tips/hints that could ease our new players journey into DUST 514. Not just for brand new players, but also simple "aha, moments"
Our intent is to then use these tips, at least on the Launcher News, maybe in game News, even the first emails a player gets, newsletter, wherever it might help.
I even think some simple Lore tidbit would be fun, for example, racial fitting styles, some information on the NPC corps (I am always intrigued by the Kaalakiota, Gurista, Six Kin but they are a mystery to non-EVE players), same with Breach, Tactical etc.
Let me kick off a few, any help on this is appreciated but the community, game masters and myself are working on a solid list, and appreciate any help you can give. Basically a keyword and a little explanation, in one or two sentences. I.e.:
1) Battlefinder: Public Contracts are a great place to start for new players and old while Factional Warfare may warrant caution for less seasoned players
2) Equipment: You can equip ammo and armor replenishing Nanohives for you and your teammates
3) Weapon: The Mass Driver fires explosive rounds in an arc, much like a modern day Grenade Launcher
4) Weapon: The Laser Rifle fires a continuous beam that increases in damage over time, but overheats
5) Dropsuits: Heavy Frames are the only Dropsuits that can equip the powerful Forge Guns and Heavy Machine Guns
5) Dropsuits: Light Frames are the fastest Dropsuits
6) Dropsuits have slots for weapons, equipment, high modules, low modules and grenades. The slot layout can be very different per Dropsuit and Race.
7) Dropsuits have two types of limited energy reserves, CPU and PG. Weapons, equipment, modules, weapons and grenades use variable amounts of CPU and PG.
Thanks! Start by increasing WP requirement to leave Academy to at least 20,000 WP and then we may talk. +1

Each weapon has a specific damage type. Keep these in mind when you are going up against enemies. Explosive (Minmatar): -20% to Shields +20% damage to Armor Laser (Amarr): +20%, -20% Plasma (Gallente): +10%, -10% Rail (Caldari): -10%, +10% Projectile (Minmatar): -5%, +10% So if you are facing a Caldari Sentinel what do you use? Thats right a Plasma weapon or a Laser weapon. A cool little thing that i noticed is that the 4 different nations have weapons good against their enemy nation. i.e Gallente's Assault Rifle could slaughter a bunch of Caldari and vise versa with Caldari's Rail Rifle to kill Gallente's.

What I find humorous is I just did a quick search for dust videos for a project I'm cutting up. Besides them being filled with things that never came, this video actually explained way more than the first or even current tutorial system now.
It actually details the whole package much more than the 'tutorial' system today, however it is incredibly outdated. When I first started, there was an in game mail that had 8 million lines of text and explained everything. I actually prefer that to today's poor tutorial implementation. Video is a good medium to get information across to your players and while still intensive, it is probably less intensive than you dedicating in game development to have an interactive tutorial. Players have been doing this for you for far too long.
Since you find it difficult to keep people engaged in-game, why not include in game mails of where to go to while out of game to get newer players more information. Link to useful starter guides, videos, and FAQs. While I think having to port players to places OTHER than the game is a horrible implementation, it's what we have now and I know of far too many players that don't even know these forums/site exists. You should use this forum as a tool to educate your players more and use your front page site for ANYTHING AT ALL. I only visit it to sign up for newsletters giveaways.
If I had access to your website, I would update that brochure-wear site for free and make it 100x more engaging.

Core Skills: Skills found under dropsuit command which affect all of your suits.
**^^ VERY IMPORTANT ^^**
Weapon: The laser rifle fires a continuous beam that increases in damage over time, but overheats. The laser rifle is highly proficient in shield damage while dealing reduced damage to armor.
**^^Example of what a weapon description SHOULD look like.^^**
These should be spammed on load screens, primarily when loading into academy battles, as well as maybe some kind of info section under updates if possible.

Sounds like an instruction manual (its about time )
Please mention that you need to train appropriate skills by buying and training the skill before you can use the types of Weapon, Suit , Module or vehicle above militia level.
I know of a couple of people who moved from other fps games and without waiting for any guidance went and bought the biggest weapon and suit they could afford then found that they couldn't use them (you should have heard me laugh).
This should be available in all the places you think it can go not just in one of them so its easy to refer to.
