I always thought that the 5 was a reference to the five major races (Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, Minmatar and Jovian) The 1 was an evil entity that had been created in the collective conscience of the sleeping Jovians and had found out how to take control of people that had the implants that allowed the transfer of consciences. and the 4 was a reference to how the Jovians were essentially slaves to this entity, but the four (Amarr, Caldari, Gallente and Minmatar) are still left to decide the future of the human race.
