Here's the deal. You guys want a great, awesome game. EVE is a great, awesome game. You might be a hard core FPS'er and have no interest in spreadsheets in space. MMOFPS's have been done before. Sandbox MMOFPS's have been done before. What makes DUST special and what will make it a great, awesome game is its connection with EVE.
Even if you couldn't care less about EVE, if you care about DUST, you need to watch the fanfest stream. Even the EVE parts. DUST needs to have a strong connection with EVE to succeed, and that means you need to have a basic understanding of EVE to contribute to a meaningful EVE-DUST connection and gameplay.

For example, right now CCP Fozzie and CCP Rise are talking about balancing Pirate Faction ships. You could be listening and getting a general idea of what 'pirate faction' means. You can see how ships progress in Pirate Factions goes from Frig > Cruiser > Battleship. You can see that they get additional hull bonuses and require multiple spaceship command skills. And most importantly, you can use what you learn to come up with ideas about how pirate factions can be implemented in DUST.

This is all relevant to us who play in New Eden. That's the point.
Keeping our communities separate won't benefit either community, and, it might surprise you, EVE is an amazingly successful game that doesn't need that benefit. DUST has everything to gain from the benefit that you would just toss out the window because that spredsheet stuf dont matter fer us dust mercs!!!

Yeah, I don't care about ship balance. Please don't try to tell me that it's relevant to Dust. At most it's a tangential relation in terms of ideas, but the specifics are specific to the game.
However, today we will also have a Valkyrie livestream. Especially now that there will be a PS4 version, I'm really interested. |

You're part of the problem. I've seen your posting and I know you're not an idiot, so why are you posting this garbage?
DUST does not exist in a vacuum. You understand that. It exists in New Eden, where EVE is incredibly successful.
For one weekend out of your super fun action part important year, just watch a live stream about the game that DUST needs to emulate to be successful.

Unfortunately our regular mercs (all ~4,000 of us) aren't doing too terribly much to uplift the game, with the exception of a few.

Lol, like we have to care about EVE to play DUST. No we don't and CCP has already done a pretty good job of making sure of that already.
I can only get annoyed about people not knowing the basic lore but, that is really the extent of any concern about lack of knowledge about EVE.
EVE does not figure into running around shooting a make-believe gun at hopping bunnies. They could have separated DUST completely from the world of EVE and it works just fine.

This guy gets it. He saw something they're doing in EVE, saw value in it, and thought of ways to apply that success to DUST. Admittedly, the art stream is a bit boring. But I'm not an art guy.
Here's an example of what keeping our communities polarized and separated does. This is from someone I fly with in WH space fairly frequently. Negativity, pessimism, and disdain. I'm doing what I can both in EVE and DUST to dispel such feelings and get some constructive momentum built up. The convo is largely unedited. I removed his name for anonymity, and some side conversations.

That's an interesting way to interpret things. Here's how I imagine what I wrote must have looked like to you. "We have to care about EVE to play DUST." Here's what I actually wrote, "You need to have a basic understanding of EVE to contribute to a meaningful EVE-DUST connection and gameplay." NOBODY CARES! Jk.......
Broken promises. Had enough of those. STILL waiting for speeder bikes and fighter jets. Fk em. Ill fly/drive em in other games. Why in the heck would ANYBODY want to know what's coming 3 years from now? Ill know when its deployed (patch notes): As a personal note: I just wanna shoot people. I could care less about "the story". |

Another example of something you could learn from paying attention to the EVE side of things: In an earlier panel they were talking about NPE and someone asked about voiced tutorials and they gave a very good explanation as to why they haven't done them. It basically comes down to if something changes in the game it makes it very difficult to change the tutorial. This also applies to DUST because it has the same iterative design model. One solution they mentioned was sufficiently advanced text-to-voice technology, which we unfortunately don't have yet. I've seen a lot scripted tutorial ideas posted on these forums, the posters of which could benefit from understanding these limitations. |

True, and I didn't mean that it was 4,000 total players. Right now we peak at ~4,000 online during any given day. Our record for PCU (peak concurrent users) online at once is 9,255. My numbers come from EVE Offline.

And how do you think new-to-FPS CCP should handle competing with some of the biggest names in the genra? What do you think that PvE should be like? Could it perhaps follow any kind of pattern that EVE has set? On a base level, could we accept missions for one faction against another? Could we hunt for NPC pirates on our own? Could we fight Sansha ground forces in Incursions? Could we play some role in the newly coming EVE Industry Work Teams?
Tying the games together and doing it well will make it worth playing.

I'd argue against that. Dust, as a FPS, will be mediocre for a while until we find the right balance across the board. That means as a FPS it won't be much competition for other big blockbuster titles. The EVE connection in-game for mechanics such as game modes, contracts, PVE, and the twill give Dust it's success early on. I'm not saying we should focus less on FPS mechanics but that the connection with EVE is a much bigger issue than you're making it out as, and more than likely will be a big decider on the game.
Because, really I believe the biggest draw to the game is that it's in a shared Universe with active players from another game.

If DUST is going to succeed it needs something that sets it apart from the myriad successful shooters already on the market. That's the EVE/DUST link. Yeah, it needs a lot of work in other areas, but improving the core gameplay and deepening the EVE/DUST link are not mutually exclusive. They can do both. |

Continuing with my theme of an optimistic view point for DUST's future and how it's related with and dependent on a meaningful connection with New Eden (That means EVE and, soon, Valkyrie), I'll be watching for how CCP is developing a third game, what steps they're taking, plans, ideas, etc. and how they could relate to DUST to make it a better game.

DUST won't be succesful until it breaks out of the small player count lobby shooter with one single game mode and one single objective mode with crappy communications which causes all public games to resemble a riot rather than a coordinated battle.
No amount of EVE connection will make DUST balanced and fun to play as long as every merc and every game asset is focused on the one single role of slaying. CCP is stuck trying to balance a main battle tank against a scout suit because in the end they both occupy the exact same role, infantry slayer.
CCP is going to have to deliver on its original promise of deep strategic gameplay before a connection will mean anything. |

You're saying it like the EVE connection won't influence the game to change. We can't have no real EVE connection with the current lobby system.
But besides that. There's not one single role of slaying, even right now.

Oh? I suppose you use your rail tank to blow a hole through the city walls to let your mercs bypass the gates and flank the enemy? Maybe your scouts sneak into the city and shut down the shield generator or disrupt enemy communications? Maybe your dropships act as crucial transport to get your troops into position
Oh, nope. Your tank shoots at enemy infantry. Your scouts shotgun enemy infantry in the back of the head, and your dropships spend the match shooting at infantry.
Every public match is a thinly disguised TDM if it is disguised at all. |

The nuts and bolts of EVE play is entirely irrelevant to DUST for the sole reason that we will never interact with EVE players in a physical sense outside of orbital bombardment. Essentially we exist in parallel universes because we are on separate servers. We still can't shoot back at ships in orbit.
Ship progression, balance, and the way they fight battles means nothing because we will never join their battles. Those happen on the EVE server governed by universal ticks of time while we operate in battle servers in real time.
All real interaction like markets will be via mechanisms that CCP has yet to define and build.
What might be interesting is the meta game and the politics, though you might argue that mercenaries don't have to worry about the politics of their employers. |
