If it were up to me the active scanner would be like the logi tool and it would only work when pulling the trigger and could stay out as long as the merc wanted but lost the scan results when the trigger was released. You can run around with the scanner out doing 360s all day but when you let go of the trigger all of the scan results would disappear. That would make it much more fun.

See the thing about video game balance, is that the item has to be enjoyable for both sides. I'd consider it very fun if my Freedom MD dealt 500HP of splash damage, but I can guarantee that it wouldn't be 'fun' for you now would it?
That would be broken simply because you'd remove all needs for tactics and situational awareness whatsoever. That is what one of the major selling points of DUST 514 are, Tactics. And when you have something that removes the need for such, the item itself needs to be removed. I'm not really sure why you think it's acceptable to have a literal wall-hack that has a 200m radius.
Tell me, how fun would it be knowing that your being scanned 24/7 and that the enemy knows exactly which direction your facing; and that the only way to attack your opponent would be to rush in headfirst simply because you're unable to flank them?
And that is why Active Scanners need to be removed. I always wanted to return to the days when tactics are what decided whether or not you held the point; as opposed to simply taping R1 to find the location of almost everyone.

They should stay the way they are. Learn to dampen or suffer the consequences. We just need more forms of e warfare and different counters.
All the butthurt players will still get killed and now they'll complain scanners are up because they asked them to be nerfed.

This thread feels a little late. CCP is already changing them, let's see how that plays out.
I do agree that some kind of active dampener would make for a nice mod/equipment for the non scouts.
Would be cool to realize you're scanned then fire off your active damps and fall back off radar. Then you have a cooldown battle with the guy scanning. |

e+üe+üheavy ---> range, scouts scouts ---e+ü> range, scans possibly Mid frame ---> cqc, range, snipers Snipers----> snipers, ob, rails Vehicles ---- > vehicles, av (lol) Scans ----> Can't be fully countered as proto levels by all but one suit w/o massive detrimental affects to rest of your suit layout
that in itself is game breaking. All other areas have counters at each level, where scans do not. Doesn't matter if you are a heavy or scout, at every level there needs to be a counter, and there isn't for scans, thusly it is a game breaking item

So a 1.8 active scan, with a narrow angle, limited duration and long cooldown, that leaves you defenceless for several seconds, is OP?
But a passive scan, offering 360 degree coverage permanently with no cooldown, that doesn't require you to put your gun away, is fine?
Guess I'll play hard mode and spec Gallente scout then. |

CCP Remnant said that "ewar is a huge huge part of DUST 514" at FF last year and while some will chirp in and say that changed with Rouge, no it didn't. Ewar is a big part of EVE and it will be a big part of DUST.
Scanners and cloaking are just the beginning of this and I have embraced both from the get go. It's only stubborn I-wish-DUST-was-CoD people who don't like them. They don't want a varied battlefield that consists of more than just dealing and tanking damage and the thought of having to sacrifice their precious HP or damage to mitigate situational awareness mechanics irks them.
Blah blah they need their crutch blah blah. Yeah yeah. I'll be using all the ewar crutches CCP throws my way including minimap denial, voice comms denial if they ever materialise and scans out the wazoo just to spite all these meatheads.
The scanner fix in 1.8 is awesome, the 360 scans were too much.
