Nope, RRs, CRs, and tanks are still FoTM. It's just that everyone has already cried their eyes out over those and now they've moved on to REs, which have been the same for a long, long time.

Even after all this time, I still see plenty of games filled to the brim with tanks, and when there are no tanks... Rail Rifles. Rail Rifles everywhere... Combat rifles are, oddly enough, actually kind of rare in comparison. Remotes are still pretty uncommon. A few players use them to good effect and everyone complains. I think I've only been RE'd two, maybe three times since 1.7 launched, though I've had a few noobs try to do so and fail. It's far from being FoTM, though they are managing to gain a fair bit of popularity and likely will continue to do so if they're not nerfed in 1.8. Sometimes I miss never seeing tanks in a battle... then I remember the mystical flying soma, and I can't help but smile.

It's just that everyone has already cried their eyes out over those and now they've moved on to REs, which have been the same for a long, long time. honestly CCP made a simple mistake which someone found and it made a big problem with the balance on tanks and thats the only reason they used so much right now and normally when you see alot of RE's its the ones stacking them on LAV's although I keep hearing that they will fix that so really CCP fixes that 1 issue with tanks and it will balance out better but just to get this out its hard for me to see tanks as the FOTM when I can kill them with my swarms quite easily me and a buddy yesterday were laughing because everyone is bithcing about AV when it's so easy to kill them with swarms and forge guns since 98% of them are noob wannbe duel hardner tanks if not just a dmg mod stacked tank. Either way MLT and poor fit std tanks die easy and only a slight few actually fit thier tank different than this and they are the ones who are tougher to kill but rail rifle and combat rifle do feel quite powerful but same can be said about other guns too

I actually was for once in ambush and messing around with a skinweave heavy which is basicly mlt with an adv hmg since I had it lvled and ran into a few using the scout shotgun RE tactic it was quite easy even as a heavy to spot and evade the RE trap better yet just blow it up lol but I can understand

Think about it they are scouts most the time think of it this way when they run at high speed and jumps they can increase the speed and distance of the RE now on other dropsuit types I have no idear maybe sprinting and jumping

Doing it from the front is possible but very risky and is sort of a last-ditch effort kind of thing. Usually you can only detonate post-mortem and most people have enough sense to back up or sprint forward when they see you do this from the front. Otherwise remotes are best as pre-meditated traps, as it's easier to just kill single players with the shotgun (with the exception of heavies, who I sometimes RE just for the surefire kill).
