The SP gap between vets and new players is somewhat of a problem. However not so much as you may think. Once you get enough SP to put together one suit that you can use in PC, The SP gap is closed as far as i'm concerned.
What's th minimum SP for making a beast PC suit? I'm asking because i'm tooo lazy to look for myself That number is the "gap" and effectively charts out how many months it'll take for you to be able to compete with skilled Mercenaries.
Anyway one of these days ill put into words my take on building a killer clone and ill put everything ive learned out there for the newbies including tips and priority for your skill points

Logis take at least 10.
Tankers can be pretty competitive with maybe 3.5

minimum for competitive pub fits are
4 in shield and armor upgrades
5 in shields for complex extenders 1-3 in armor for basic/adv plates
enough in nanohives to get a compact hive
1 in granades for fluxes and easyer to fit locus
basic suit of your choice
then get a single weapon to proficiany 3 or 4
then at least 1 point in a sidearm although i would put some points here.
also enough points into CPU and PG to fit it all
the other optional route is to go for damage mods as stacking 2 damage mods will help you end fights quick in situations where you are the one who starts shooting first.
tadaaaa, now you can stomp pubs all day.
if your a logi then get ADV equips iun all the equipment you want to carry and leave it at that for a while
for PC the minimum effective SP is probably about 20mil unless your a very specialised and saught after role like tanker, or dropship pilot who can get away with alot less SP invested as long as you have the RL skills to back it up |

~10,000,000 SP if you go 1 Weapon with Proficiency 5, Weapon Upgrades 5, 1 Proto Racial Dropsuit, Max Core Upgrades, and ADV or better on 3-6 different Modules.
The Dust fitting tool would be highly recommended if starting from scratch.
*I would estimate about 3 months, without Boosters or SP events

Map knowledge and basic game mechanics will save you on numerous occasions and will also often lead to getting the drop on a seasoned veteran. YouGÇÖd be surprised how many GÇ£veteransGÇ¥ still haven't got to grips with these skills and it will be these players that new players will easily be able to kill.
Although there can be a lot to take in and there will be a lot of SP to invest in; Logistics is a good choice for new players to choose, seeing how you come to learn many of the basic mechanics easily with this class, because of its versatility! That said, heres a snippet from a logistics guide I wrote for my corp for skill point investment.
Quote:Commitment is key with the logistics class as you will be investing a lot of skill points into equipment and the use of survivability moduals; shields or armor depending on your chosen logistics race. You do not want to rush into things and skill straight into a prototype suit, as you won't have the necessary; equipment, models, weaponry or the ability to fit anything!
If you are considering skilling into Logistics with an alt, youGÇÖll be better off making a new PSN account and make one from that; rather than using a spare character slot. Since SP is paramount with this class, youGÇÖll need all the SP you can get! So make a new account, this is so you can gain the passive SP earned every second (which only applies to one character slot per account).
Depending if you are using boosters or not, it will take you roughly 2 months to gain enough SP for a prototype suit (2,487,360 SP), youGÇÖll be better off spending that SP in gaining; CPU/PG upgrades, advanced equipment, moduals, weaponry and an advanced logistic suit to familiarise yourself with the role and trade tools. Because rushing into prototype suit will leave you feeling underpowered and useless; making you a easy target while at the same time losing a lot of ISK in the process!
Heres a basic step by step guide to help you in becoming the mercenary everyone will be asking for:
With the initial starting amount of 500k SP from a GÇ£new buildGÇ¥, you can skill into a basic racial logistics suit off the bat! YouGÇÖll need the following skills.
Dropsuit Command I Race X Medium Suit III Race X Logistics I Dropsuit Upgrades II Armor Upgrades I Shield Upgrades I Dropsuit Core Upgrades II Nanocircuitry I Repair Tool Ops I Total SP: 491,260 Total ISK: 1,608,000
From here onwards you're welcome to skill into which ever suits you best, but remember, equipment and moduals should come first; If you die your teammates are going to die, as you won't be there to save them! IGÇÖll be progressively recommending what skills are best for your next GÇ£levelGÇ¥ in amounts of 500k SP:
Up to 1 Million: Dropsuit Engineering 1 Dropsuit Electronics 1 Repair Tool Ops 2 Drop Uplink Deployment Armor Plating or Shield Extension 3 (Dependent on your chosen race) Armor Repair Systems 2
Up to 1.5 Million: Weaponry 3 Light Weapon Operation 3 Weapon X Operation 1 Explosives 1 Nanocircuitry 3 Dropsuit Engineering or Electronics 2 (Dependent if you need more CPU/PG)
Up to 2 Million: Race X Logistics Dropsuit 2 Armor Repair Systems 3 Armor Upgrades 2 Shield Upgrades 2
Up to 2.5 Million: Race X Logistics Dropsuit 3 Repair Tool Operation 3
Up to 3 Million: Armor Repair Systems 3 Weapon X Operation 3 Armor or Shield Upgrades 3 (Dependent on your chosen race)
With only 3 million SP spent so far youGÇÖll now be a fully fitted advanced Logi Bro. as you are now at advanced level; now is the time to fully familiarize yourself with your logistics play style; thinking about what to skill up into next.
Don't forget about your own tanking skills. Whether it be armor or shields, I'm sure youGÇÖll make the best choice.
I hope this helps o7

How many L5 skills are an absolute must to be competitive?
Or does an extra 5% really mean the difference between competitive and also-ran?
Also, do we allow Aurum suits & items?
Using Aurum prototype weapons, suits and modules, and level 4 in skills where possible, how many SP are required, and how close to competitive can you be?

If your really good and specialized, then 8mil SP will suffice.
If your an omni-soldier, then 15mil will make you as competitive as a specialized player.
If you are a tanker, then 3mil will put you in there, and 5mil will make you incredible.

But that 5million is basically just an equipment spammer & scanner.

About 10-12Mil, depending on the role you're playing, but you're all way off on the time it takes to get that amount.
Link with maths below, but it's 5 1/2 months to 10Mil and almost 7 months to 12, with no boosters.

I'm thinking about starting a corp called "the Enfeebled". There are two requirements: you must start an alt labeled FEEB(name here) and you are not allowed to spend one SP beyond what the game minimally requires to get started. With tight squads and superior tactics, I am sure we will win every time. So, to all of the most deadly no-matter-what players out there, your time has arrived, and your place is reserved.
