In 1.8 scouts start with a 20 meter scan radius With skills it goes to 20*1.5*1.25=37.5 meters for the gallente scout
Now let's add range amplifiers 1 complex gives you 45% more scan range
With 1 complex you get 54.4 meters (37.5 * 1.45) With 2 complex you get 78.8 meters (37.5 * 1.45 * 1.45) With 3 complex you get 114.3 meters (37.5 * 1.45 * 1.45 * 1.45) With 4 complex you get 165.8 meters (37.5 * 1.45 * 1.45 * 1.45 * 1.45) This is assuming no stacking penalties

In terms of passive scanning, 107m is very good, especially since passive scanning itself is far better than active scanning. For most people though it'll be overkill and unneeded. For example, three complex would give you 95m and two would give you 75m.
I've been running a passive scan scout and for city maps, 45m is plenty. This is even without active scans from squad support.
I'll most likely only run one or two range amps on my suit when 1.8 hits. |

Using two gets you to 78.8 which is the effective range of most guns. It is huge to be able to detect cbrs, scrs, ARs etc before they can really touch me. RRs still can get you pretty quick from that range, especially adv and pro.
I was toying with the idea of throwing a third on in 1.8 and using pro RR and simply stay out of other guns range while mowing errbuddy down. Being a scout, youd be able to keep everyone at that range too unless you got surrounded. |

I think your math is off:
1. 54.375 meters 2. 75.638 meters 3. 95.073 meters 4. 107.181 meters

This, plus the fact that data is constantly refreshed and is thus 100% accurate (within its scan precision) makes passive scanning so much better than active. |

I'm strongly considering a fit to include range amps and precision enhancers on a stealth snipe fit. Running Assault med or min-med for snipers gets you caught by too many scouts with shotguns to the back.

If I were you, I wouldn't bother skilling either of these up if I wasn't going to run scout myself. You most likely won't be able to get your precision low enough to detect scouts after 1.8 anyway, and the range is very limited without the scout's range bonuses. |

Can someone clear up a question of mine about passive scanning?
I'm curious to know if walls and other visual obstructions interfere with scanning; when playing as my ninja scout, I usually lurk inside of enclosed areas and wait for enemies to approach a node to hack. Occasionally, I'll see the red dot appear on my map but most of the time I get nothing until the enemy either starts the hack or enters my field of vision. Conversely, I've been in matches as a heavy and, when guarding a node from the top of the stairs, I'll have the enemy begin the hack from less than 10 meters away. I have to move down the stairs a bit before I can actually target the red (and have him appear on my map.)
I've also had opponents run right by both my heavy and scout suit to reach an objective and never notice me.
Life is killing me.

Chances are, on your minja you weren't close enough to an enemy for him to appear on your passive scans (16m without modules or skills), or when they were close enough, you already had them in LOS anyway. As a heavy, your scan precision is so high that you could only passively scan other heavies within 10m of you.
When your passive scans are skilled up, you see through just about everything so long as an enemy is within your range. Some have said you can't see through terrain, but I haven't found this to be the case (i.e. I can still passively scan a guy who's hidden in a ditch in the ground). |

Erm, it's already possible to get ~100m passive scan on a gallente scout with the current racial bonus of 50% rather than the new bonus of only 25%.

The thing is the gal scout will somewhat lacking scan precision he will be only able to detect medium or heavy frames (unless he fits precision enhancers on his high slots). That will balance the range and of course his lack of everything else. A scout with more than two range amplifiers is a highly specialized suit build for exacly one purpose (and still gets somewhat beaten by an single piece of equipment) |

Yeah Gallante scout wont reasonably be seeing other scouts on the scan. Caldari MIGHT be able to but without confidence, its meaningless anyway. If someone CAN get under your scan you need to assume they will. So I wrote off getting scouts since I assume in any meaningful play, scouts will get under what the passive can do.
But that being said, if i cant take a scout 1on1 as a fellow scout, thats on me. And as gallante ill be under his scan too, so its an even playing field.
Its funny all the Scanner is OP talk, and passive scanning blows it out of the water. Sure you need to sacrifice tank, but thats fine when youre shooting everyone in the back.
Getting passive scan skills up also helps other classes. Guess who's heavy spots other heavies at 15m? Pretty sick advantage considering you can get the pre-spool on the HMG going.
The real question is, does passive scan share to squad? Ive tried testing with a buddy but so far inconclusive. Weve had some moments where it seemed yes, but others where he swore he didnt see something he should have.
As for the question about walls and stuff, no, they dont block the scan. Similar rules to active scanning apply.
The absolute best thing about passive scanning is how much it allows for safe hacking. Someone coming to kill me? I see them. Someone spawn at the cru or point? I see them. The only way I die from spawners now is stupid invis uplink guys as I am aiming my shot to take it out. |
