I was flying about the other day and saw a station that got me to thinking; you could totally fit a battlefield in there. Most pics come from Eve Travel, a site you should definitely check out if youGÇÖd like to see what lies beyond GÇÿthe doorGÇÖ.
Space stations in Eve are unthinkably vast structures. Titanic in scope, they can be seen by the naked eye from the surface of the planet they orbit, and are host to millions of individuals who are born and raised, establish families, grow old and die; often without ever leaving their home station. This is a Cyclone battlecruiser which dwarfs the Eiffel tower, sitting comfortably at dock in a Gallente hanger.
What IGÇÖm saying is theyGÇÖre big.
Big enough to hold stadiums, and big enough to have entire metroplexes under their miles-high domes. Topographical features such as plateaus and great rivers can be seen from outside the pleasure domes of the Gallente. You could easily fit any map we use, particularly the skirmish maps, into these stations without a problem. Orbital strikes are still possible as well, with the Sentry Drones commonly used by capsuleers floating high above the battlefield.
So why would anyone who had a space station let immortal psychos run around blasting away with rail rifles and forge guns? Greed. The Evelopedia article on Echelon Entertainment contains multiple references to televised combat tournaments, not to mention that this sort of thing already goes on at the Haadoken Summit every year. With the advent of truly immortal megastars whose families can never file a wrongful death suit or insurance claim, entertainment corps such as Nugoeihuvi , Impetus, and The Leisure Group would jump at the ratings bonanza. Camera drones and helmet cam feeds would be priceless for the advertising industries.
Station interiors would also be a good place to hold the Dust equivalent of the New Eden Open or the Annual PVP tournament, allow Player Corporations to have grudge matches without the hassle (or profit) of owning districts, and even hold bloodsports such as Capture the QuafeGäó Flag. This could also lead to new maps or interesting skins for the maps currently in existence. Egonics billboards for people to snipe from, ads for Viziam scrambler rifles and Rifter frigates along with plasma scorched Fedmart murals on buildings, plus the knowledge that youGÇÖre fighting and dying to hock CBD credit cards. There are lots of options with the New Eden flavor.
As well as going a long way towards reminding players in both games of the massive scope of New Eden. Looking to the sky to see the towering walls rising up to the pearlescent dome high above; or being blinded by the reflections of an artificial sea glittering in the distance. And thatGÇÖs just the Gallente stations. The cold impersonal Caldari stations, festooned with propaganda, the Brutalist architecture of the Minmatar, and the dizzying airshafts of lustrous Amarrian gold. With mega-scale engineering and the power of the ISK, anything is possible. |

Station interior maps are an excellent idea. Interior maps would also be a great way to integrate Eve and Dust without hurting game balance. Pirate bases and asteroid colonies could be taken over on missions with interior battles. One has to be careful with station control in high sec, but in lowsec or nullsec, station control could be gained with interior battles. One has to answer several questions: Why are some stations indestructible? (answer: Jovian, ancient, or alien tech that is not available to players). How does one gain control over a large station? (answer: by hacking the central computer or computers, the same way one captures null cannons). Why would anyone want a station anyway? (answer: sovereignty control of the system, for available factories or physical plant, taxes, or to deny it's use to a particular enemy). How does one get his army into a station? (answer: transfer of consciousness, microwarp gates, warbarge landing craft, or covertly placed drop uplinks, or clone reanimators). Getting equipment fits to the battle site is always a problem, but this could help explain different battle tiers or unequal numbers. I really look forward to seeing, and playing low level militia battles on pirate bases hired by low level capsuleers. Honestly I can't believe that the Dust team doesn't already have something like this in the works. It will be great! |

I really like this idea.
Plus I think it would really be cool for Dust players to be involved in the Station capture (as Calanorn stated).
And given that it's a station environment, and I'm guessing control rooms etc would be within the confines of smaller sections of the station it would provide a nice change to some of the more open maps that we're seeing in Dust atm (not to say that I don't like open maps, I just like variety, the spice of life as they say).
But the idea of tournaments and in station battles for sport and "show" also seems like so much fun and describes a perfect example of showing the extent of the universe that players interact with. Especially as Dust mercs seem to be the more "down to earth" (scuse the pun) ones, having them "show off" for the inhabitants of the universe would be an awesome way to do that.
Add to that that it gives the options for way more odd/weird battle types "smg only", "scout suit only" or the like (apologies for the awful examples there but I'm sure you get the idea). |

Stations have always been a good idea. I posted in a thread just now about this two, but its important that you aren't taking ground in EVE with DUST. Station timers have a habit of producing some of the largest fights.
Control of a station? No.
Disabling station services? Yes. |

Disabling station services? Yes. Very well. I really can't comment on the massive megacorp nullsec battles, simply because I don't understand them. I am much more interested in involving new players in both Dust and Eve in this massive virtual world. So how about just maps based on plexes that fairly new pilots could offer contracts for? For the moment maybe we could ignore how the clone equipment arrives. Maybe just one map until the bugs are worked out? It might be interesting to try. |

in the meantime, I have thought of another problem with station DUST PVP maps. The problem would only arise if the Eve pilot could pick the power of the dust mercs he could hire. If the pirate base mercs have fixed gear, and the eve pilot hires proto gear mercs, the battle is essentially over before it starts. One solution to this would have the eve pilot inject a drop uplink or clone reanimator into the structure, perhaps with an unmanned special landing drone. Perhaps only militia versions of this with preset fits would be available to high sec pilots doing missions, and the pilots on both sides would arrive with transfer of consciousness, (what we ruefully refer to as the "clone express" method of travel in Eve, which happens when your pod gets killed). This would make an Eve PVE mission more interesting, and add another weapon to the high sec Eve mission runner's arsenal. The 2 dust groups could battle over the gun emplacement controls, and the central computer, as well as spawn points. The eve pilot could buy clone reanimator equipped drone landing craft that have the contracts for the battle included, thus not upsetting the eve or dust economy. After the battle is over, the dust players could jettison salvage from the station, as well as find salvage themselves (that could be hauled back for a [fixed?] price). The eve pilots could come back to salvage or not as they do now. This would not require eve pilots to wait, and would really not require much more of the dust players either. It would mainly be a new weapon for low level Eve mission runners, and a new, more equal map for new dust players that doesn't require massive numbers of players to create a viable contest. It would be a great way to integrate the two games better in this truly amazing virtual universe. |

That sounds awesome, it would be an interesting change of scenery. From the sand and dust planetary battlefields to awesome commercialized arenas. It would be interesting to have some sort of ranking/fame system in place, not necessarily based off of any sort of actual fame, but to reward good players in the arena. The grudge matches and bloodsports sound really cool too, I kind of get bored of skirmish, domination, and ambush. I wonder if the Learning Coalition would start running grudge matches to help students learn as well. As well, there could be some unusual aspects to the arenas due to the fact that they are artificial, such as uneven lighting across the map (one area could be well lit and another could be twilight dark). Though perhaps that wouldn't be appealing to a viewing audience (aka CCP either not wanting or being able to program it). |
