It's realism, Shad. It's likely possible, it's definitely something CCP should look at. And I think it'll work decently. But there's most certainly work involved, and I'd give it about a 1% chance CCP will have this working for the summer launch of PlayStation Now.

Here is the thing. Crowd Sourcing is super effective. If it's money/staffing that would keep it from happening then crowdsource and knock it out. Porting it to PS4 makes a lot of sense. In addition, doing it before the end of the first year will more than tripple the number of players on it for sure. Think about how many games will even be out for PS4 by December of 2014. Maybe 40? So it will be, at a minimum, a top 40 ps4 game. |

Let me get in line for that or I could just use a real computer I had built by CyberPower that blows it out of the water and does more.

Eko Sol wrote: I know devs that optimize linux OS's for various things (i.e. datamining, Network Security, etc.). I know for a fact that OPTIMIZING an OS for gaming is completely different than just making a pc into a fake gaming machine. This is literally the same as a console in almost every way EXCEPT it isn't completely propritary. Expect better performance than you would get with a DirectX Windows PC by far. No useless OS stuff to worry about....except for viruses. My only concern is viruses because it will have the same holes as most linux distro's. Other than that, it will be better in every way...theoretically.
I dont get your point, so what is again special about the Steambox? I read somewhere that the OS will be open source, I could get the Steambox OS and use it by myself for gaming. I can also run it as a VM with VGA passthrough & hardware virtualization on any lightweight minimal install Linux distro and dedicate most of the hardware ressource to this VM and get the same performance as the Steambox plus even more. and if the VM dies to whatever (like you mentioned e.g. an exploit/infection) I can just delete the VM and setup a new one without any damage to the main system.
fact is, steambox is nothing special, getting and HTCP like case with windows and run the latest games is something everyone can do and it costs as much as any other computer for gaming. |

Someone please explain what the appeal of that newbox is over a proper rig? I just can't see it.
Why the fk would you want to spend that much money, on a fun sized (sht) pc that plays console games?
Someone please explain what that joke can do better than a decent rig and be able to play console games doesn't count as pc games are about 10 years ahead of this crap.
It all seems to be a hype over nothing.

According to this PS Blog You will need +5Mbps to stream a game properly and according to them, Multi-player works. |

When this comes out it's a day one get for me...
This single addition could be what wins the console wars.
Also - Sony is trying to pass rights to stream content into PS1/PS2 games, in order to change them up without having to break down the coding and do it manually. Allowing them to add new content to games like Legend of Dragoon and Breath of Fire 3, it also would allow trophy support for older games.

I am a total SONY fanboy but I don't have much faith in the multiplayer part. They said the same type of things about the PSP and it never lived up to it. SONY makes great electronics and pushes innovations but the end user probably doesn't have the connection speeds that SONY uses to test these things out on. I am all for them trying but I will believe it when I see it working.

And even though sony has a better hardware package put together right at this moment for their console, I don't see the Playstation 4(even though i own one) lasting to long as the dominate force in the market place. In fact i see the Console wars coming to an end all together with the Steambox, officially cross-platforming every game on steam. http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/valve-steam-box-release-date-news-and-features-1127072It potentially is a console/budget gaming PC killer. If Valve keeps with the idea of allowing SteamOS to be open source and allow hardware manufacturers to build their own hardware spec's and pricing margins, the sky is the limit for hardware capabilities. Game development is much an art, and has been turned into a business first then art. EA games for example could build games with just the development tools and pieces that has been built over their collection of titles. Then Frankenstein a game together quickly, buy a shelf in the Walmart and Gamestops and have a successful title. The Steam market could potentially allow an avenue for all game developers to market their products or art, without having to go through distributors and partnered mega vendors. The sky really is the limit with what Valve is purposing, if executed right this could be the end of the cross platform debate and the need for static half decade old hardware platforms for living room entertainment. $500-1000 for a steam box, people will get them but they will not kill consoles or PCs. Every year some new device drops that is the console/PC killer and it never happens. The steam box is a laptop with no screen, the miniature size makes it as expensive or more expensive than a equally performing PC. Why would I pay more for a PC that does less than a PC? Consoles will probably never die because they are good pieces of hardware that have long a long life. Consoles may become more alike than different but the steam box will no one kill them off because of the entry price, ease of use and brand name recognition. Steam boxes use the internet to download content, many places have slow/bad connections or even no connection at all. Console solve this by providing players with physical media that doesn't need the internet. I would be shocked if the steam box sells half as many as a PS4 or xboxone. Why spend the extra $500 when I have the PC or console that does it already?
You could argue the tablet and smart phone is slowly killing both the console and PC. And people are still saying they arent and the laptop is king. |
