Steambox is an overrated piece of ****. Everyone and their mother can buy a htcp like gaming pc, connect it with the tv and a gamepad to enjoy console like experience. If you are lazy you can buy a prebuilt one from e.g. Alienware, or if you have decent knowledge about pc components you can get one thats very silent even under heavy load and if you are great at crafting and physics you can, like me, even make the case and heatsinks by yourself thus it cools completely passive via natural covection aided by several heatpipes.
Btw my htcp like pc runs ubuntu with a windows VM that has VGA/hardware passthrough thus I can run any game anywhere at home with almost zero delay and almost zero performance loss on any machine with remote access via lan. I could even do this via internet but the delay over internet is not healthy in pvp, I would need better connection at home for it but it is enough to do market stuff in eve. The nice part is: runs fully passive cooled with selfmade heatsinks, cpu max temp is around 60 at very heavy load. It takes almost zero watts to run when not in use cause the pc sleeps without load and is waken up with a magic packet when required. I can wake up the pc through the internet, connect to it, start eve and do some trading and all that with phone or tablet.
With better hardware i could run even more sophisticated setups but that costs money. |

I know for a fact that OPTIMIZING an OS for gaming is completely different than just making a pc into a fake gaming machine. This is literally the same as a console in almost every way EXCEPT it isn't completely propritary. Expect better performance than you would get with a DirectX Windows PC by far. No useless OS stuff to worry about....except for viruses. My only concern is viruses because it will have the same holes as most linux distro's. Other than that, it will be better in every way...theoretically.
I dont get your point, so what is again special about the Steambox? I read somewhere that the OS will be open source, I could get the Steambox OS and use it by myself for gaming. I can also run it as a VM with VGA passthrough & hardware virtualization on any lightweight minimal install Linux distro and dedicate most of the hardware ressource to this VM and get the same performance as the Steambox plus even more. and if the VM dies to whatever (like you mentioned e.g. an exploit/infection) I can just delete the VM and setup a new one without any damage to the main system.
fact is, steambox is nothing special, getting and HTCP like case with windows and run the latest games is something everyone can do and it costs as much as any other computer for gaming. |
