For the record you can build your own steambox at whatever your price point is. In addition, companies have offered dual boot systems to include windows so it is very possible to DIY a steambox at a budget for sure. You can overclock and everything through the bios and flash the card. Then put it in a machine for a steambox fit...i mean build. |

Jack McReady wrote:Steambox is an overrated piece of ****. Everyone and their mother can buy a htcp like gaming pc, connect it with the tv and a gamepad to enjoy console like experience. If you are lazy you can buy a prebuilt one from e.g. Alienware, or if you have decent knowledge about pc components you can get one thats very silent even under heavy load and if you are great at crafting and physics you can, like me, even make the case and heatsinks by yourself thus it cools completely passive via natural covection aided by several heatpipes.
Btw my htcp like pc runs ubuntu with a windows VM that has VGA/hardware passthrough thus I can run any game anywhere at home with almost zero delay and almost zero performance loss on any machine with remote access via lan. I could even do this via internet but the delay over internet is not healthy in pvp, I would need better connection at home for it but it is enough to do market stuff in eve. The nice part is: runs fully passive cooled with selfmade heatsinks, cpu max temp is around 60 at very heavy load. It takes almost zero watts to run when not in use cause the pc sleeps without load and is waken up with a magic packet when required. I can wake up the pc through the internet, connect to it, start eve and do some trading and all that with an android phone or tablet.
With better hardware i could run even more sophisticated setups but that costs money.
I know devs that optimize linux OS's for various things (i.e. datamining, Network Security, etc.). I know for a fact that OPTIMIZING an OS for gaming is completely different than just making a pc into a fake gaming machine. This is literally the same as a console in almost every way EXCEPT it isn't completely propritary. Expect better performance than you would get with a DirectX Windows PC by far. No useless OS stuff to worry about....except for viruses. My only concern is viruses because it will have the same holes as most linux distro's. Other than that, it will be better in every way...theoretically. |

Also I'm going to add the question about Dust & the Steam Box up so those post don't look off topic. It's realism, Shad. It's likely possible, it's definitely something CCP should look at. And I think it'll work decently. But there's most certainly work involved, and I'd give it about a 1% chance CCP will have this working for the summer launch of PlayStation Now.
Here is the thing. Crowd Sourcing is super effective. If it's money/staffing that would keep it from happening then crowdsource and knock it out. Porting it to PS4 makes a lot of sense. In addition, doing it before the end of the first year will more than tripple the number of players on it for sure. Think about how many games will even be out for PS4 by December of 2014. Maybe 40? So it will be, at a minimum, a top 40 ps4 game. |
