Hey. I'm picking up a 49" gaming television tomorrow. Double the reaction time of my current TV and bigger.
Anyone use gaming TV's here?
Notice a big difference between normal tv's and TV's enhanced for gaming?

I've not noticed a difference.
Of more concern is the internet connection and game stability - one of which Dust doesn't exactly have in spades, so I haven't seen much of a difference there.

"gaming" tvs have slightly different settings, most of wich are possable with a regular TV, while also having a higher scnreen refresh rate ( i forget what they call it)
for the most part the difference is negligable, and it provides no real advantage.
it just basically makes fast paced action appear smoother, like how action scenes in movies are shot with a higher framerate to increase the realisim of the shot.
its not worth the added cost IMO unless your getting it for the same price as a compairible non gaming tv |

I'm assuming you use a gaming TV?
My tv, is pretty bad for gaming. Slow reaction time. this new tv might be even faster then double, probably closer to triple.

No point for me as I have a real slow Internet connection, 1.5 mb max, and I don't think the frame rate for dust is particularly high.

Would it even be worth it. Its not like dust uses the full hd 1080i or 1080p of tv's now. One day perhaps, but imo now it would just be a waist of your money. |

Some games are WORSE on good tvs.
A good example is the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed. On a shoddy tv, it's a-okay.
But on a good tv, your eyes will bleed from the ridiculous screen tearing.

I've got two 36" TV's in my game room....1 for PS3, 1 for whatever sport I can find on cable...at least that was the plan...
now it's for whatever my wife can find on cable....
but at least I can still game as much as I want  ....we both get to be in the same room...and I have an excuse for wearing a headset and not listening to whichever Kardashian is having 1st world problems.....
as for "gaming tv"...?......aren't they all.......

DUST doesn't even hit 30 FPS when alone in a field anymore... so no it doesn't help much.. anymore.
If you have one with a persistent crosshair display... then yes. Because the crosshairs in DUST are terrible and are way more dynamic then any bullet spread or recoil mechanics are in DUST... |

currently, give it 5-10 years and the tech will get cheaper and become more available.

Gaming monitors don't base their "gaming" capability on refresh rates, they base it on reduced response time in order to combat input lag, at least that's what I looked for, that and a DVB-T receiver.
The 120Hz or 240Hz feature you mention is either to support 3D or to make motion look smoother by buffering each frame, it doesn't help with gaming and can some times hinder it.
Now, about gaming TVs, never owned one in the traditional sense (32-40+ inches, fancy apps etc), but given that for TV and movies, response time can be higher without any ghosting effect, unless it's a fast panel or it can reach 5-7ms response time with overdrive, there won't be an actual difference, just a bigger screen to look at. |

Agree to disagree. Though some of what you say is accurate, it's on the consumer to do research for what they are going to buy. I wouldn't blindly buy anything just because it says "gaming" on the box. Caveat Emptor, as they say.
It's not the refresh rate, it's the response time , like someone said. And the difference is MASSIVE in comparison to playing on an old display or large TV.
No , you don't need to buy a "gaming" display to get great performance. Anything with a decent response time of under 5ms, you can find samsungs or or sonys with this, you just need to do a little research. Whereas a "gaming" monitor company knows you are looking for this, and all the models meet certain specifications.

I switched from using a 42 inch Samsung badass LCD TV from 2009-2012
To now using the Sony 24 inch 0 latency PS3D 2012-Present
The difference in gameplay is LITERALLY more than a second reaction time between the TVs...
And in an FPS that's huge.
The problem with bigger TVs that say they are "Meant" for gaming is that its usually not true.
These TVs usually cost more and play your games at a faster and smoother rate than other TVs BUT because the TVs are so damn huge it takes longer times to take your video game picture and spread it out across the television, that is why many professional gamers play on smaller TVs. The difference is literally on a smaller TV moving a joystick not being able to notice even a sliver of delay between the action, and going plug up to a bigger TV and counting the time between you moving a joystick and action occurring onscreen.
If you plan on going onto a TV anything above 28 inches to play your games on your immediately at a disadvantage the second you turn on the controller, so if your going for a TV that big be SURE it says 0 latency on the box, and be prepared to pay an extra hundred or few...

It's not refresh rate (measured in Hz) but latency (measured in ms) that's the problem with normal TVs.
Depending on your original TV, going to a gaming TV could provide a significant difference in gaming experience -- less apparent video lag. |

I have the Asus VE278,the non-3D monitor,and man is it boss!
I've been playing on monitors for a few years now,and I just can't go back to bigger TVs.Asus makes monitors as good as any TV out there for gaming.
