http://www.polygon.com/2013/12/12/5201758/ccp-lays-off-15-staffers-working-on-world-of-darkness
Quote:CCP, the developer behind Eve Online and vampiric MMO World of Darkness, laid off "approximately 15" members of its staff, senior PR specialist Ned Coker confirmed to Polygon today.
Those affected were part of the World of Darkness team in Atlanta. CCP issued the following statement:
"CCP today made strategic adjustments to the staffing on the team working on the World of Darkness project in Atlanta that resulted in the elimination of approximately 15 positions at the company. The change was due to our evaluation of the game's design and ongoing development needs. While this was a difficult decision, CCP remains committed to the franchise and our promise to make a compelling, rich and deep World of Darkness experience."
World of Darkness was announced in 2006; few details have been released about the game so far. Most recently, it was shown during this year's Eve Fanfest. CCP previously said a team of at least 70 were working on the game. |

Being laid off is something that happens very often in the real world. Companies do it all the time for various reasons. The company I work for lays all of us "young guys" off every October-January. Luckily I make an excessive amount of money and am smart enough to save a large chunk of it for a rainy day.
Simply it is what it is. They, I, anyone employed, is lucky to have a job, even if it's for a limited time. |

The OP is another example of someone who doesn't understand how business works.
If someone has to get laid off because of financial constraints or because a project is not doing so well, then so be it. That's how market forces works. Besides, it's likely those employees were given some extra money before being laid off.
**** like this happens all the time around the world. Walmart, Walgreens, EA Games, CCP, Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Google, Nintendo, Bank of America, Morgan Chase, GE, Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, practically every business in the globe is guilty of this kind of practice.
BY THE WAY...
Since the employees were working at the Atlanta (US) office and they get laid off (different from being fired) then that means that according to US laws they are entitled to Unemployment Benefits.
OK, CCP. When are knives finally going to be improved?

I'd love a WoD game some time before I'm too ******* senile to enjoy it (last WoD game was in 2004!!!), but I agree, CCP seemed like the worst possible choice to make it back when they first bought the rights, and they still seem like a poor choice to handle it now. WoD would be infinitely more difficult to develop than Dust, yet they seemingly have their hands full with the latter. Doesn't bode well at all. I wish they'd just unload the rights already and give another developer a chance with the setting. |

In CCP's defense they haven't been actively working on it for seven years. It was shelved for most of that time, or getting the bare minimum of pre-production.
Developmentally, I'd say it has maybe 2 years tops of solid (albeit inconsistent) work put into it so far. Though it still begs the questions: if they haven't been able to enter full-scale production in nearly a decade, when will they, and why did they bother trying in the first place? |

CCP should of kept the developers and rolled them over to Dust, god knows they are having trouble cranking out content as it is.
Also working on a mmo pre-development since 2006, that game is never coming out.
But hey maybe it'll be like D3 or SC2, who am I kidding, Blizzard works for years and plays their own games and crank out success. CCP cranks out material on a constant skeleton crew and does not have time for play testing, iterative design is done by players, and leaves many with a dissatisfied experience.
I wonder which one is still cranking in millions per month and which one isn't.. |

It sucks they're losing their jobs but the timing is not a real issue here because they'll all get paid notice period or severance pay in lieu, so they'll all be set for the holidays. If they'd been laid off in October as someone suggested would be nicer, their notice period would likely be ending just around Christmas, so that would have actually been worse.

ThePrinceOfNigeria wrote:What a bunch of douche bags firing guys right before the holidays. Really classy CCP... I have lost all faith in your company due to the way you continue to bungle Dust and the way you treat your workers. I mean really if you had to make layoffs do it in Jan or in Oct like a normal company ffs... http://www.polygon.com/2013/12/12/5201758/ccp-lays-off-15-staffers-working-on-world-of-darknessQuote:CCP, the developer behind Eve Online and vampiric MMO World of Darkness, laid off "approximately 15" members of its staff, senior PR specialist Ned Coker confirmed to Polygon today.
Maybe now they will hire more for Dust team.

If they aren't doing their jobs or CCP cannot maintain them then such are justifiable reasons.
I get the feeling that people are misunderstanding this.....I don't mean that I don't sympathise...since I cant empathise...its ****** luck.... but when you get fired it irrelevant. listen to the man. that's life. get over it. |

I'm not going to have work in the new year, I won't even be working 2nd January but I'm not gonna ***** and cry about it, i've been unemployed for long periods of time before.
It's life. it's the age we live in, it's **** but it's either get through it or put a bullet in your head. I've contemplated the latter but you have to say NO, **** YOU and press on.
And when someone won't give you a job, give yourself a job, if I get no luck, I'll just sell games, toys etc then go over to France. You can park up and camp anywhere there, they don't care. That's an adventure
Sitting behind a desk your entire life is NOT an adventure. Who knows, maybe these ex-employees will find a new lease of life! Maybe they weren't enjoying their job!
Oh and FYI "just before christmas" doesn't sit, christmas is the worst time for anything work related. |

As I understand it, most US based companies work off a fiscal year calendar (for tax reporting purposes) that starts on or around October 1st of every year. However (and I could be wrong), CCP operates off a fiscal year that starts at the beginning of the year (January). Most companies lay coincide layoffs with the end of a quarter or the end of the fiscal year. So it's just that simple. End of fiscal year, time for any layoffs. It has nothing to do with Christmas, being evil corporate monsters, or any other stupid things like that.
Also, this is the Atlanta group of CCP which is focused on White Wolf licensing and the new World of Darkness MMO. They have only some contributions to EVE Online and even less to none for DUST 514.
So for the locationally challenged: CCP Reykjavik = CCP HQ and EVE Online; CCP Atlanta (actually Decatur) = White Wolf Publishing / Word of Darkness MMO; CCP San Francisco = ? servers/licensing ?; CCP Shanghai = DUST 514; CCP Newcastle = servers for EVE Online and more.
While that's like the "emphasis" for every one of those locations, but doesn't preclude the idea that there is a lot of cross-over with all of them for technical expertise etc.

ccp are far from cruel scumbags etc. you only have to see how they behave around each other to know its all one big playground for them. its likely these few knew it was coming way in advance and i doubt ccp have just thrown them to the wind.
the post only suggests one time they were removed from the company yet ccp's replies seem to suggest they were removed from the world of darkness team. who is to say they were not just transfered.. ccp has a lot of things in process at the moment so its unlikely they would get rid of good talent out of the company.
