The Manus Peak skirmish map actually had a peak, on the A - B side of the triangle. Everybody hated it but the snipers, who had a magnificent, spectacular time headshotting anything that moved, since they had a commanding view of all null cannons on the map. When Dust came out of beta it was flattened, ending their glorious reign of pwnage. Many bitter sniper tears were shed at its demise, and according to lore, continue to fuel the Dust serves to this day. |

when dust came out on closed beta the first i rememeber from that time is that i used to shoot whoever I came infront of.
You know why? This is because i couldn't see any F******kin name tags so when i first logged in I though my enemies were my teammates were my enemies, so yeah I got f*******ked from the back a million times, raped afterwards. |

In the beginning, there were small turret installations. Basically a pivoting seat with small blaster, rail or missile turret mounted on it. The same turrets that now occupy only passenger seats of vehicles. They existed in glorious choke point positions.
Why does nobody ever remember the small turret installations???
Bring them back!!!
Edit: and you got stuck on everything. Especially the top of a staircase. Grrrrrrr |

there is a lot of really unjustified nostalgia here. it was as bad as it is now.
beta: what worked worked what was broken was unuseable(often painfully literally) less content more meta < here be nostalgia

Also, sniping was a matter of crouching and shooting other crouching ants before they shot you. There was no cover whatsoever in the hills. I miss my Logi scout. 2 equipment, no sidearm. An RE trollers dream suite.
I really do miss my scout Vk.1. Three highs, no sidearm, 3 equipment, three lows. and back the scrambler pistols and SMG had real rang. SMG logi scout was so fun.

The only things that was better in beta that it is now was general suit balence assault were better than logi for assaulting, heavies were feared and scouts were very very difficult to hit (due to bad hitdetection which actually made them OP), then nerfs came along first it was the heavy because it was nearly impossible to run out in front of one and win in a 1 on 1 at close range which was fine but poeple still complained then everything else got nerfed in response to the new weakened suit, then to make it even harder to balance along came uprising with its racial variants and bumble bee suits (logi), suit balance got quite smacked up over time.
Skirmish 1.0 i cannot explain how fun this game mode was it was simply better than current the map was actually quite large and varied one side would attack and one side would defend but the attackers spawned back in their own base you would not know where they are coming from there were many routes and points of interest to take over not just a hand full, not only that but turrets were really good small and large turrets were placed on the map to help the defending team, the simple choice you had about how you wanted to proceed was great .
Proto gear was much less common in early beta
Personally i quite linked when we could call in free Lavs tanks and dropships i found it added alot of variety to the fights as tanks were much more common.
But it was not all good the game hard froze like after every 2 matches, freezing during the match was common and made really annoying by the fact that once you froze you had to load the game up again which took quite some time.
I cannot explain how bad hit detection used to be back then alot of cqc engaments with assualt suit Ars would take 2 or 3 mags to kill the other guy this was quite frustrating.
Op weapons and over buffing and over nerfing it happened alot tanks went from gods to paper bags in one patch, heavies got very nerfed early on and are only realy getting out of it now, somethings were way over powered like the swarm launcher that dumbfired killing every one at close range while doing nothing to the operator, dropships with missile turrets were Op once also, to a lesser degree tanks were and scouts which is debatable due to hit detection of back then.

Since no one else has mentioned it, ISK payouts were crap and market prices were absurdly high, all militia gear were BPOs that cost ISK. And when I say crap, I mean you got maybe 40k ISK per match, and GEKs were 36k apiece.

things that were the same in beta: proto stomping, uneven matches, things getting nerfed.
things that were better in beta : ambush was split into two modes, so we could ignore the crappy standard ambushes, player count was higher, draw distance was better, salvage was much better. Protostomping was a rarity until very late chromosome. And even then, few people did it, basically only Imps and PFBHZ went protostomping.

I'm not gonna describe it much...
Just know that Closed Beta and Open Beta are preferred ONLY because of the nostalgia that happened then. The current game is way better and has less issues to deal with compared to back then.
Bugs out the anus, OP Dropships(lol), and then some. The buggy part was a real issue for me. I've heard the bugs were so bad that some systems went the way of the brick after a bad crash. Also there were a lot more people here who weren't ready for a game like Dust and so there was much more crying as well...YAY! Mass Crying on Forums...(Sarcasm).

Thanks In Advance
It was happier because there was no sp sinks, players weren't constantly being nerfed you might not know it but the game while very very low on content and still had it's problems that could be fixed was much more stable. Now something is always breaking and it feels like the end of the game. Mix the point we're out now with Chrome and you'd get a good shooter with no aim assist with lots of content and better graphics. Instead it's like CCP has gone 2 steps forward 3 steps back.

Took about 5 minutes to get into the game. About 15 minutes to load big contact lists just to invite to squads of four. Fitting bug. Paper thin free lav. I think we had to stay close to the squad order to get the squad bonus. Connection issues, frame rate issues and lots more. It wasn't better, it was new.
Remember assault logis from then? Assaults acting like logis and now we have logis acting like assaults.

The way i remember beta was indeed the HAV's where truly feared, 3 to 4 of them, would leave a pile of body's and to use swarms and av grenades you would have to get really close to the hav for it to have an effect. A good Heavy suit could massacre entire squads, we could die offcourse, but the hmg was a reall hvy weapon, not like the pea shooter now and taking us down was an actuall challenge, not a spitting contest like now. Lav's where murder taxi's, but a heavy used to be able to rip them apart and that's what i miss the most....looking down my gun, staring at the bull, waiting for it to charge and then releasing carnage....untill either one of us was dead....And snipers where reall snipers, most shots where kills, not like the weird hit detection now. Laser where melting machines, you got struck by one and you where guaranteed dead. Death was extremely fast, not like now. But then the reall pain and sorrow's began, nerf after nerf after nerf, slowly it came closer....AR514.... |

What the hell were you smoking?
Beta back then was just as unstable as it is now. Nowadays you don't hear much about console crashes anymore and there are far less memory leaks in comparison.
