I hear everyone talking about it all the time, but I never really hear what it was like. I just started playing this a few months ago, and I still don't know a lot about this game. If anyone beta players can give me some summaries on what it was like, I would surely appreciate it.
Thanks In Advance

There was only the Amarr Heavy, the Caldari Assault, the Minmatar Logistic, and the Gallente Scout suits. There was no flaylock pistol, plasma cannon, and scrambler rifle. The graphics weren't as good as they were now but the render distance was just fine and the game was pretty balanced. Also the Laser rifles were horribly over powered back in chromosome. We use to not be able to recall vehicles. The aim assist was also non existent back then. Keyboard and mouse was better then the ds3. Rail tanks could destroy pretty much any well fit tank in 3 shots. Manus peak was rail tank heaven. (Truthfully I kind of miss that big mountain it use to rack me some nice tank kills)
Oh and the TTK was pretty good (With the exception of the laser rifle) |

Once upon a time the MCC moved and Swarm Launchers where Dumb-Fire. Heavies where feared and there was a skill that increased your range. Dropships where OP with missile turrets and there was only one color, Grey. Forgot to add If you where super O.G There was no Laser or Mass driver. Skirmish 1.0 was the SH!T and everyone got unlimited tanks/dropships and lavs. Assault rifles had a bomb-ass scope back in the day.

Right! Remember when you spawned in the SAME spot every time....and then your body would appear about 1 sec before you actually had a screen, so you were soooooo easy to spawn camp. Or...or how about the 3 body width hit detection (it was so cool, you never had to actually aim at the dood, just in front of em).
Good times indeed.

- Less Content
- FGs even more WTFBBQ sauce lulztastic against infantry
- Dumbfire Swarm launchers requiring absolutely zero skill to shotgun-blast EVERYTHING
- Craptastic hit detection
- The most amazing gamemmode ever, Craterlake 1.0, where defenders held off attackers, and attackers had to disable (two minute self destruction countdowns) two defensive relays for the MCC to advance, then shut down the null cannons so the MCC could dock and win.
- You could heal the MCC with Rep Tools and earl lol-WP
- Healing Vehicles earned WP which meant you could game the system and crash your own LAV into a wall, heal it, and repeat
- Damaging vehicles earned WP
- Mobile CRUs earned WP iirc
- Supply Depots were really effing short and easy to miss, and ugly as hell
- CRUs looked way cooler
- Skirmish was called Ambush and Ambush was called Skirmish
- "Random" Spawns in (Now called Ambush) Skirmish resulted a high likelyhood of you being spawncamped (I still have all of the possible old spawn locations memorized for Communications and Bio)
- Charge Sniper Rifle was hilariously the lowest SP sniper rifle.
- Scouts were extremely hard to hit due to hit detection but vaporized if they made a mistake
- Heavies killed everything close-in, besides scouts which ate them for breakfast
- Derpships were scary as all hell, crushing people
- RDVs would randomly screw you over AND KEEP CALLING IN WHAT YOU ORDERED UNTIL YOUR STOCK WAS EXHAUSTED, so no one ever had more then a few of X vehicles. This would also result in hilarious mountains of LAVs that were farmed for WP as well as creating massive-ass explosive nuclear mountains of fun killing everyone when detonated.
- RDVs were extremely trollish... Top-notch.
- Remote Explosives would "pin" vehicles down if placed on them.
- Breach ARs were the end-all-be-all weapons.
- Everyone started as Caldari, and your initial role was Frontline, AV, or Sniper with different starting skills.
- List goes on...

Way back when there were no lasers or mass drivers as well.
Craterlake was the only map and it was loved.

Creodron Breach AR ruled the field.
Sometimes you would see two teams of dumbfire swarm launchers killing everyone.
Turret AI could drop you in a heartbeat without a player.
Railguns could hit the MCC, which moved across the map.
Spawns in the compounds would be under constant fire.
Remote demo didn't have an icon.
All the rifles had scopes.
Good times.

Don't be fooled. This game in Beta was way worse than it is now.
The game took around 5 minutes to start up.
The load time for games could take 5 minutes before you heard this tone that was a sound of relief that the warbarge was finally coming. Most games you started were half way over after waiting for 5 minutes watching this odd spinning thing at the bottom right of the screen.
Match making (if you could get into a match) was just as bad.
There was only 3 or 4 maps.
Squads were limited to 4.
Most of the time you would lose one if your squad to an all suites "Invalid Fitting" bug.
Memory leaks meant you were restarting your play station multiple times a night.
AR was your only assault weapon, and they all had a TV scope similar to the sniper scope you see now. When they finically did introduce the Iron Site, it was the worst looking, in the way site you could imagine.
The sharp shooter skill extended range to a point that an HMG could down a merc from the table on Line Harvest to the supply depot. The LR could cook you from across the map.
ADV tanks were indestructible. Missile turrets had so much splash that smalls would OHK mercs from ceiling circling drops hips that could only be killed by proto forge (swarms couldn't catch them). AV grenades didn't disappear after you threw then, so the maps were littered with hundreds of little land mines that made LAVs impossible to drive.
The only good thing for new players was every few months there would be a complete skill Reset for everyone, so everyone had to start over.

things that were worse in beta : dust beta had crashes every other game, lag was worse in pc, you needed to pay for coms. tac rifles, murder taxi's, and hav's dominated every game, looked much worse( but honestly I preferred that look ), hit detection was horrid.
things that were the same in beta: proto stomping, uneven matches, things getting nerfed.
things that were better in beta : ambush was split into two modes, so we could ignore the crappy standard ambushes, player count was higher, draw distance was better, salvage was much better. |

Lamp posts (aka The Poles) were so OP that if an HAV were to even ding it, they would explode. Apparently the lamp posts were made of some next-level **** that often times we wondered why their manufacturers didn't bother to produce tanks.
Shooting a dumb-fire swarm at your feet enabled you to clear out an entire room of 10 mercs in a single shot.
You had to access a small console located on one side of the CRU only in order to hack the CRU. This made it easy to camp the CRUs. Just aim at the console.
Blaster and Missile turret installations looked much cooler back then and they had built-in barricades for added protection to the gunner and support mercs.
The 'Crater Lake' map that was mentioned earlier was known as Skirmish 1.0 where you started off with the defending team already controlling the objectives that are deep behind a dynamic redline that would retreat back if the defense relays were destroyed by the attacking team.
Bad Furry ruled the game with his boom box and HAV perched on the hills going 60-0 in a single match.
Squads and Corporations were non-existent.
The only time you could voice chat with someone at all was in a match and even then there were not that many players who remembered to enable voice chat.
We were in the Singularity Test Server.
Spawning in the redline was once considered a death sentence.
Dropships would crush you easily.
Nova Knives were once melee weapons... but they required a full charge before actually being useful at all. Even then, their damage output was extremely weak.
CCP, thank you for hotfixing the knives. But please make sure they're at their full potential in 1.7.

It was so much fun. I used to yell at the TV(still do) when I was cut down by a laser. I was a Heavy back in Beta and I remember when a Heavy was a heavy. I was able to cut down 4-5 people before I died. I remember LAV's trying to run me down and I would open up my HMG and the vehicle would explode with passenger just inch's from me. I have to stop because those were the times I missed the most and remembering them only make it harder to keep playing the current build.

Uprising was the start of --==DISSAPOINTMENT/514==-- You do know that right now we have just about as many players active as we did in open beta right? Let me clear this up.
Closed betaSkirmish 1.0 300 players online peak about 2000 codes out
phase 2 closed beta700-1000 people online by the end. 10,000 codes given out 3 months of skirmish 2.0. Promised tiny playerbase it was just testing a second gamemode and skirmish 1.0 would come back at some point. This was the map with the 4 control points in a square. no flight cieling.
Phase 3 closed beta2000 people online. Huge influx from ign closed beta giveaway. 5000 more keys given out. Invite a friend program need the end. missing something...Remote mines have no timer youcan set them off the moment they hit the ground. I go 34-12 with remote mines and then for some reason CCP nerfs it :P This is when they introduce the communications outpost map which is still my best map.
Open Beta sorry need to look up more old posts... |
