The Seyllian event is when unstable wormholes opened up in new eden for the first time. The very first ones shattered 9 planets, the first one known about was an Inhabitied one called Seyllian. Killed 99% of the population of the planet from what I can recall.

What's the process of becoming a capsuleer or clone mercenary?
Who pays for the initial expense? I'm assuming only a corporate sponsor, or something, could afford it. Also, how/why are you selected over other applicants?
Are questions like these covered anywhere? I've tried looking before, with no luck. |

If your pod is destroyed you wake up in your medical clone. You can fly to a station with medical services and transfer your medical clone contract in order to pick where you will wake up in the case of clone death. Medical clones cover a certain amount of skill points so you need to make sure it is upgraded or you'll lose some SP. The clones do get very expensive.

I'll give you a truncated answer based on what I remember from EVE lore.
In EVE, you pilot a ship as an extension of your body by being immersed in sci-fi goo, in your pod (just like an egg). When you suffer enough damage that your pod's breached, you are euthanized instantly (the precise timing of the death is critical, hence why your pod kills you fractions of a second before your pod physically blows apart). A scan is made of your brain the instant before death (thus preserving everything you learned to that point, or, skill points), and the results of said scan are uploaded to a waiting clone on a space station of your choosing. |

Sansha Kuvakei was originally a Caldari businessman who ended up buying up large tracts of space. He envisaged a utopian society where all intellectuals would have a place, workers would do their jobs without question, and so forth.
Suffice to say his vision was warped as he began experimenting with slaves and mind control implants to create mindless servitors called True Slaves to complete his labour. Eventually he expanded that and began implanting all Nation members with it.
In the end all 4 empires and CONCORD banded together to remove him from power. That is essentially when the Nation disappeared.
More recently they returned and warred against CONCORD. This is where we discovered that the Nation was now located in Jovian space with a massive fleet in orbit of a Jovian station.
Now the Nation launches nightmare raids out of generated wormholes allowing them to strike anywhere they please, trying to claim resources, and claim new stock to make True Slaves from.
They have adavanced laser weaponry and wormhole control devices akin to Jovian tech which leads many to believe the Jovians have been wiped out and Sansha now uses the ruins of their society as his base of operations....which for us is ...well not good.
Also Tibus Heth went missing recently and is suspect to have been captured by the Nation....but no evidence has substantiated this claim. |

The process can vary from person to person, but as of recent trends there is one constant.
To become immortal you first must die.
All new capsuleers and clone mercs die in the process of having their mind copied over to a new body.
The bodies that capsuleers and clone mercs use are different from normal humans, and modification to make these bodies is done from the ground up. (I.e you can't just pull somebody off the street and modify the body to be capsuleer / clone ready.)
Furthermore, because of the complicated and neurological strains upon the body, only a select portion of the population is capable of becoming a capsuleer. In many cases it is impossible to know until the procedure has been undertaken, although in the Caldari State Eugenics program there were people custom made to be capsule-ready.
As for initial expense, this varies wildly. One may be rich enough to afford it themselves, others sign up for the process as part of the military / mega-corporation / large organization they are member to, although risk of death can be high. Many of the original Clone Mercs were chosen against their will, memory wiped, and retrained via simulation environments to be utterly loyal to their respective faction. (The Amarr) It should be noted however that such a method is not fool-proof due to the complicated nature of the human mind.
Other unwilling participants can include random soldiers who were deemed valuable enough to transfer over, and likely is the origin of many of "us." After all, it's a simple manner to get a soldier to appear for a "routine check up"...

Those wily Caldari. Is there anything they can't do?
Seriously though, thanks for the detailed answer. I've always assumed the number of capsuleers/clone soldiers would have to be relatively low, and that paying for the procedure would likely entail being sponsored and essentially being an indentured servant of your sponsor for a set amount of time (like a 50-year contract). Of course, this being a game, you just make your character and join whatever corp you want; but from purely lore standpoint, I'd imagine there'd be many, many strings attached in order to become "immortal".

= Empyreans =
Capsuleers are sponsored by the empires themselves.
Time has proven time and time again the cost savings of a capsuleer far outweigh traditional people despite the technological costs involved.
Concord Regulates the mental training and pilots selected are on a genetic requirement. In natural cases markers that would make one such person pilot capable is about in a billion. Because of the rarity of these sort of people they're often referred to as the elite of humanity by the pilot status alone. Caldari have been known to use test tube genetics to increase the number of people with the markers after all they do have the smallest populace and based on the last census the highest amount of pilots.
The cost savings are easily justified, A security detail mission where a capsuleer in a single battleship can accomplish with high success alone would take traditionally over 30 battleships and appropriate escorts and they will be suffering losses with a significant chance of failure. With nearly 10,000 lives aboard a traditional battleship that is a significant amount of lives and payroll at stake. Also all the experience the crews had may go down with the ship.
Capsuleer sized battleship only have a crewing requirement of 1,000 people, all lower tech marginal tasks folk such as janitors and cargo bay handlers. Crews are so stripped down some crews are allowed to bring their families aboard capsuleer ships so they will never be far from home while earning a higher pay than normal. Capsuleer crews on average are indeed paid far more than those on traditionally captained ships despite the high risks and prone to conflict most capsuleer ships are subjected too. Specialist crew are sometimes brought aboard to run higher technology systems such as a cloaking system on the covert ops variety of ships. Generally tech 2 ships have even a much smaller crew as more systems are automated.
When it comes to raw crew pay, insurance, cost effectiveness in securing or recovering stricken business Capsuleers are highly efficient to tax over, incentive with pay and loyalty and create new ones despite some of the going on their own ends. Concord and the Empires know what threats the capsuleers can impose and do as little to provoke them into any type of rebellion. After all empires still have majority franchise of new technological developments and are the sole provider to the skill book programs and many of the current technology blueprints.
= Elysians =
Immortal Soldier projects of all four empires are primarily funded by the armies that each empire hosts. Concord is still uncertain on what to do about us but for the time being are treating us as equal to the empires allowing the individuals to seek whatever freedoms are allowed to them under the law. Like capsuleers we have been proven highly effective in terms of costs and deployment to the point traditional forces avoid any type of conflict with the Elysians at all.
This does not change the fact that the empires can continuously keep pouring more and more isk into the projects to accommodate the mercenaries on the field and acquire new soldiers to which for all that is known only a high mental discipline is required. Nearly anyone can become an immortal soldier regardless of their genetics and background. Though the militaries often favor using populations of their own special forces, medically discharged soldiers, and sometimes even criminals as a form of punishment.
There is hesitation to go full speed ahead on these projects on being there may be too many immortal soldiers to handle. While an entire division of infantry may not be able to beat a squad of immortal soldiers, that entire division can still destroy the CRUs and the enclaves, the router which soldiers are relayed to in case of death. There seems to be a limited range of our ability to jump and if one were to eliminate all nearby routers a permanent death could be possible though the possibility of such being capable has yet to be proven.
Also as another means of control the empires who expertly designed our military grade clones are able to kill the clones at any time they see fit remotely. The first generation of clones did not have this kill switch and had to be extracted from the field by traditional means.
Most mercenaries however have bought their own personal clone free of the kill switch and often use it in their private quarters and lives. Clone companies are working on expanding services to the mercenaries to allow a wide range of appearances.

About 200 years old (by age of the consciousness), there are some rich aristocrats and businessmen who turned to cloning and conscious transferral to extend their lives. Wealthy humans who can afford the care can live pretty extensively.
Clone tech overall has been around for a fairly long time to make all manners of clones from traditional copies to modified humans to replacement parts.
For example
Sansha Kuvakei as mentioned above is pretty damn old and rather bitter and he was confirmed dead before.
He established his empire 112 years ago and he was already in his late adult life when he did it.

No need for the indentured servitude part really. I'm sure the corp or faction sponsoring your ascension to godhood would like you to be indentured, but you're immortal now. If you don't do as they wish what are they going to do? Kill you? Sure at first they might have control of the backup clones you're reborn into, but it isn't that difficult to get around that by installing medical clones elsewhere, either in the stations of other corporations or in lawless space. This may be part of what limits the creation of immortals - the people paying for it want to be sure they're selecting people who will be loyal long enough for the investment to pay off.
This is root of the whole theme in the expansions going forward from Rubicon. The empires created us (clones and mercs) and they're finally figuring out that they don't have the control over us that they thought they did. I can't find a source for it atm, but that was a secondary concern of CONCORD - controlling and limiting the impact of disruptive technologies like cloning / mind transfer. You can see it in the EVE books anyway. The same thing happened when mercs were created, the empires created us thinking they could use us as a tool. Inevitably, we spread beyond their grasp and began fighting not for there interests but our own (e.g. Molden Heath) |

Right, good points.
In that case, the 4 major factions should secretly engineer some kind of virus that is carried by everyone, but specifically targets and kills genetically modified clones, regardless of where they were created or by whom.
You know, just as a backup plan. |
