What's the process of becoming a capsuleer or clone mercenary?
Who pays for the initial expense? I'm assuming only a corporate sponsor, or something, could afford it. Also, how/why are you selected over other applicants?
Are questions like these covered anywhere? I've tried looking before, with no luck. |

Not exactly lore I guess....
I'll give you a truncated answer based on what I remember from EVE lore.
In EVE, you pilot a ship as an extension of your body by being immersed in sci-fi goo, in your pod (just like an egg). When you suffer enough damage that your pod's breached, you are euthanized instantly (the precise timing of the death is critical, hence why your pod kills you fractions of a second before your pod physically blows apart). A scan is made of your brain the instant before death (thus preserving everything you learned to that point, or, skill points), and the results of said scan are uploaded to a waiting clone on a space station of your choosing. |

Those wily Caldari. Is there anything they can't do?
Seriously though, thanks for the detailed answer. I've always assumed the number of capsuleers/clone soldiers would have to be relatively low, and that paying for the procedure would likely entail being sponsored and essentially being an indentured servant of your sponsor for a set amount of time (like a 50-year contract). Of course, this being a game, you just make your character and join whatever corp you want; but from purely lore standpoint, I'd imagine there'd be many, many strings attached in order to become "immortal".

Most of this is extrapolated from EON magazine, Ingame events, and current lore subject to error and corrections.
Thank you very much; excellent answer. |

Kristoff Atruin wrote:No need for the indentured servitude part really. I'm sure the corp or faction sponsoring your ascension to godhood would like you to be indentured, but you're immortal now. If you don't do as they wish what are they going to do? Kill you? Sure at first they might have control of the backup clones you're reborn into, but it isn't that difficult to get around that by installing medical clones elsewhere, either in the stations of other corporations or in lawless space. This may be part of what limits the creation of immortals - the people paying for it want to be sure they're selecting people who will be loyal long enough for the investment to pay off.
This is root of the whole theme in the expansions going forward from Rubicon. The empires created us (clones and mercs) and they're finally figuring out that they don't have the control over us that they thought they did. I can't find a source for it atm, but that was a secondary concern of CONCORD - controlling and limiting the impact of disruptive technologies like cloning / mind transfer. You can see it in the EVE books anyway. The same thing happened when mercs were created, the empires created us thinking they could use us as a tool. Inevitably, we spread beyond their grasp and began fighting not for there interests but our own (e.g. Molden Heath)
Right, good points.
In that case, the 4 major factions should secretly engineer some kind of virus that is carried by everyone, but specifically targets and kills genetically modified clones, regardless of where they were created or by whom.
You know, just as a backup plan. |
