Meta Gaming 101
Host: Dust University Date: Wednesday, October 30th Time: 0300 Eve Time - That will be 11:00pm Eastern Standard Time on the 30th. Speaker: TrueXer0z Run Time: 45+ Minutes - 15+ Minute Q&A Post Lecture Chat Channel: Lecture.D-UNI
Note: If you have any Questions about the lecture time please contact "TrueXer0z" in game.
Greetings Mercs,
The time has come for people to know what other aspects of the game can be utilized to further the ambitions of your rise to power. Within Dust 514 we have already seen empires rise and fall and the game is so young and in many cases, still building its foundation. Meta Gaming is a very large part of the New Eden universe. It brings us together, tears us apart. It is what starts and ends the most epic of conflicts. Those who embrace some of the more devious aspects of this art form lurk in shadow waiting to strike when the time is right. Others use this form of game play to build relationships within our community and strengthen the bond between the different corporations.
That all being said, meta gaming is what makes the New Eden universe stand out above the majority of MMOs. There are so many aspects that have yet to be explored within our humble game of Dust514. Join Dust University in our Lecture channel and maybe gain some insight, ideas, or just enjoy the rants of a crazy man that has way too much time on his hands. There will be a Lecture portion that last 45+ minutes and a open forum Q&A after words.
We ask that everyone who joins the channel to please respect the speaker and have your push to talk set to ON. This is to avoid any interruption within the lecture itself. We here in the Dust University hope to see people from all kinds of different corporations attending and welcome alternative ideas on the subject during the Q&A. Thank you all very much for your time. See you there.

I... don't think you realize that Dust University has over a thousand something members, and that most of them are new to the game, thus still learning how to play the game. You can't expect everyone to be instantly good the moment they start DUST 514... so this 'lack of team play' and 'bad play' style you're apparently talking about should improve with time.
As for the 'won't even let you join their half full squads' comment.. that's laughable at best. As I keep telling people, if you do not join Squad comms when you join a D-UNI squad, you're more than likely to be removed by discretion of the Squad Leader. Otherwise you're just taking up a space that was being saved for a corp mate.
How our members run their squads is completely up to them... especially considering the fact that they almost always ask if a random non-corp member has squad comms active. |

Why all this hate? Self-promotion?? We're not drafting mercs to take over planets, we're advertising a class. When did teaching people become a d__k move?
I'm not gonna go into great detail concerning how irrational it is to believe an entire corp should be "kicked out of DUST and never come back again", nor how absurd your justification (or lack thereof) for such a notion is. Your resolution to 'kick and ban us forever' is completely out of proportion to your extremely limited experience with a corp as huge and varied as D-Uni. You just feel the need to hate some people, I get it.
We accept everyone. We have 1,000+ members. A lot of them are inexperienced, and some of them might not be friendly. Our teachers, however, are passionate about their subjects, and invested in deepening, and bettering the gaming experience of other players in DUST 514. There's nothing "self-promoting" about it.
On a side-note: if getting kicked from a squad that you randomly joined mid-battle makes you butt-hurt, don't do it. It's not poor of etiquette, or disrespectful on the Squad Leader's part, to kick randoms after a match, so no one's going to apologize to you for doing it. |

Teaching someone how to create their own story, and teaching someone the aspects of meta-gaming, are two different subjects. The latter is what this is about. Rather than jump to a negative conclusion, why don't you come out Wednesday night and see what it's actually about? |

Part of what makes EVE Online and DUST 514 great is that the players DO create their own stories! If you want to play a game that decides everything that's going to happen for you, play a single-player game, or better yet, read a book. Meta Gaming is using the power that CCP has given all of us, as players, to effect the universe in major ways! The biggest corporations can be infiltrated and destroyed from the inside, by a single person! Entire military operations can be sabotaged. There's more to it than aiming and shooting, if you WANT there to be. This is how DUST 514 separates itself from every other FPS game on the market.
You try to make CCP sound lazy, but you hardly even thought this through before you posted. |

Like it or not, DUST is as much EVE as EVE is as much DUST. They're set in the same universe, tied together on the same server. The connection might not be there yet... but in a few years EVE Corporations will be looking to exploit DUST players for their own personal gains and vice versa.

And... what exactly are you talking about? "Skipping features because the meta-game covers it." The meta-game has absolutely nothing to do with the developers at all, considering it's the only content in DUST and EVE that is completely player driven. The entire FEC vs EoN war /was/ meta-game, played out by the players themselves. Not with the help of Devs...
Really, come out Wednesday to the lecture at least to gain a better understanding of meta-gaming. |

I would like to request further lectures on the following topics:
-History behind each race (have like 10 minutes brief summary, followed by 40-50 minutes more in detail for those who'd listen, like me) <- so roughly an hour. PER RACE, mind you. I don't want no wishy-washy talk rushed because all races were crammed into one.
-What happens in EVE. What you guys put into this I leave up to you. As a 99% DUST player (played EVE trial and am thinking about getting serious about it next year) I am mostly clueless about EVE. For example, for weeks after PC was introduced, I thought 'plexing' meant the act of trading PLEX, those in-game time cards. Confused the shiet out of me. I thought, what the hell is FW doing influencing that? I only realised it was short for complexing, and what that meant, after some research. Maybe 30-40 minutes for general explanations about EVE with 1-hour sessions specifically on a certain topic within EVE.
Would love Q&A sessions for these too. HOWEVER if EVE Uni does these lectures and they can be accessed from DUST, point them out. I was thinking though, EVE lectures may contain terminology foreign to the average DUST bunny. Referencing hotkeys, for example.
-Technology behind weapons. Perhaps some of your teachers may understand how lasers, plasma, snipers work? How they should work? How they SHOULDN'T? Would be interesting to know some of these logical flaws and the gaping holes where realism clashes with good gameplay. Short or long, depending on the interest of the lecturer. Maybe no Q&A as it could get controversial.
-Even just talking about forum threads of interesting topics, and getting people to express their opinions. I'm sure that it is the vocal minority on this place constantly; I'd love to see you guys report back on the community's views on an idea expressed in a forum thread.
Additionally:
-Streaming? I don't know, this may be a bit of a stretch, but DUST offers gameplay that will captivate audiences far more than EVE could. Perhaps streaming a game and describing what you're doing, etc.
-
Anyways, good luck with this lecture. I won't be attending personally but I hope you don't get too many mic trolls.

I'll inform our Director of Education to look over this post and see if he can't figure out how to go about it. As far as E-UNI is concerned, I believe they do some of these specific lectures, I'm not 100% sure as I'm not in E-UNI on my eve character. However, I do know that they have a public mumble channel, and that most - if not all - of their lectures are open to the public.
Though, anything DUST related will more than likely come out from DUST University.
EDIT: Goro's link should help a bit more.
