Well today i made an alt up to run with some friends who have both just started and are coming back after not playing since chromo and all i can say is the new player matchmaking is awful. out of the 4 guys i spent an hour convincing to start playing only one is coming back tomorrow evening to try M/KB as he didn't realize you could use it.
The things that came up were just the completely un-balanced matchmaking. We went in and started the academy battle, we had a good match both sides equally matched everyone had an average KDR i went 12/5 other went things like 7/9 5/4 11/7 ect all very similar and the top 8 on each side had over 1000 wp
then we started a new match.... well an entire squad of full proto guys, other squads of mixed proto and adv and 3 tanks. going up a team of full starter corps who most of us had min 500k sp and probs max 2mill sp. we got f***in thrashed worse than a gimps backside. Wouldn't have been too bad but all night we've come up against the same issue. the starting SP is so low you can barely get anything worthwhile. the assault rifle with none - lv1 skill is so pathetic the mercs may as wel just pick the stones up off the floor and throw at the proto guys cos they'd be more accurate and do more damage.
sometimes we've found the odd match that we've done reasonable at but the rest of the time has just been constant MD spam, forge spam and sniper spam. after an hour one guy got fed up and left saying he'll stick to BF3 and 4 shortly after another left saying he was just fed up of not being able to move more than 10m without dying after 3hours i was by myself with a couple of messages on my psn telling me they're deleted the client and are gonna give the game a miss as they didn't enjoy one bit of it as they were just constantly spammed over and over again.
problem is this isn't the first time i've had this from my friends. i've got 9 recruits and the only 1 still playing is me on an alt i made.
My ideas to make it a more welcoming and gentle introduction.
Matchmaking needs to be more balanced, the academy is a great idea but you're removed from the gentle approach far too quickly. players need to be matched by individual skill points or maybe a squad average so everyone is running the same skill leveled setups.
Starting SP. Far, far, far too low. the original setups of giving you a fixed set of starter skills and skill books depending on the role you want would be a lot better. starting with approx 1mill sp with fixed starter skills gives them a little more chance of survival. Also, new recruits should receive 2x SP gain for the first 30days (allow boosters to increase that further) this will allow them to feel good about getting skills trained and that little buzz you get with a new weapon or suit that finally unlocks to try give a positive first month experience.
After just them 3 hours my friends morale for the game was just crushed and there was no excitement just misery and frustration and its not just them, 80% of the 385 members of my corp all feel the same way. most of us feel its a chore to play the game and we're just here to grind out to skill gap and only relief is when we do. the only reason we keep coming back is because of the time we've invested and the constant telling ourselves its got to get better soon. there was a reason we had the AFKMCC issue. People are simply just rubber banding the analogues and doing it that way instead of wanting to actually play teh game. its time CCP woke up and realized that for the most part the game isn't much fun anymore we need something other than the constant proto stomping in pub matches we need the infestation mode, somewhere to go with a small group of mates to go against some AI to blow off steam when you've had your 6th match in a row of being forged, MD'd and sniped all round from the red line or trundled around a near empty map and come out with 200wp each.
Personally as much as i have a love/hate relationship with the game i just pray that it will be around long enough to fulfill its potential but with the constant bad decision CCP seem to be making to p**s off the player base and the ridiculous idea to not even release a compatible client for ps4 i just cant see DUST surviving another 12months. with average 4000 people online at once, falling to about 2500-3500 once folk have capped out and other big name shooters coming out i just see the player base coming online to cap out and then going off to play bf4 and cod leaving dead maps the other 4days of the week |

I have to agree, starting SP is unbelievably low. It used to work, but not anymore. I've had this crazy thought... What if new characters started with 500k base SP+ passive since 5/14... Or maybe half of that based off of when they made their character. Help bridge the gap a bit, at the very least. |

Starting SP could help a wee bit but overall there is nothing you can do to replace actual experience, those who been playing since close beta will always have a leg up over the noobs even if you give him a newbie account he is totally going to destroy academy.
Better matchmaking would work but that requires a larger pool of players to draw from to get semi-decent skill slotting.
Another solution we can look at is pre-implanting new characters with the omega boosters 30days as a good head start. |

I'd go for tiercide as another potential solution to this.
I agree that increasing starter SP will solve nothing. In a year, starter SP will have to be raised to 2mill. In two years, 3mill for starters just because everyone else has ridiculous amounts of SP and can unlock every single bloody weapon in-game.
Hence tiercide. SP sinks should be in passive bonus skills, and unlocking variants. Tiers are crippling progress. New players should be able to unlock lots of items, but whilst the stats are very similar/the same as weapons vets use, vets have a slight bonus in terms of passive bonuses, experience, and being in squads. I think that's enough; tiers just take it two steps too far. |

They need a 2nd tier academy that new players can grind up SP until around 2 millionish. This should be optional. It will give newer players a safe harbor, but prevent players with 1.9 million SP from stomping players playing their first match trying to learn the controls.
Tiericide would ruin DUST. It would eliminate the only competitive advantage it has that makes it more compelling than other shooters out there, and basically turn DUST into a horrible imitation of Planetside 2 instead of an RPG with risk vs. ISK mechanics. |

"Concord, in an effort to reduce environmental impact, has requested that no untested combat supplies be used. All prototype gear is locked in this contract"
That alone would work miracles in making matches even. |

Myself, just coming out of newberry syndrome (1mil+ SP) I agree with all above. It's been a grueling 2 plus weeks of meat grinding my dropsuit up, and hitting my goals, and trying not getting my ass handed to me every time I hit the pavement. If you have the skills, background, patience, etc. EVENTUALLY, I, we, can get there. But no real intensive to hang in there except for ones self commitment to the game, prize. |

What if there were a separate section for beginners, or anyone looking to help/recruit beginners, where the only gear players were able to use is militia gear? It would give them the chance to earn some isk/experience and learn the game without the worry of being so totally outgunned. |

true, there was a mixed bag of us, we're all familiar with FPS gaming and we're all capable players but not matter how experienced you are if you come face to face with a full proto gear with someone who has just the minimun to run the proto suit and weapons. they will outgun a gun in a militia fit with 500k starter sp. as i said, there were a few matches where we manged to get a few kills in on guys with similar suits and we got the jump on them but for the most part we were simply cannon fodder. If you've ever seen Gamer, We were John Leguizamo all we needed was a sweeping brush.

Yup, new player experience is terrible. I actually started playing in Beta, but after two weeks I got fed up and quit for months. Came back at uprising to a nice couple million SP to invest which was the ONLY way I ended up staying tbh. Most recently I convinced my brother to give this game a shot. He quit after a weekend and said this game was worse than Call of Duty and that he would rather take a dump on his PS3 than have Dust on his hard drive. |

no. it doesnt.
An example up until recently (when more and more A$$hat corps started abusing it) was the Oceania server.
It used to have SMALL group play: 2x2, 4x5, 6x6 matches, of relatively inexperienced players.
And that is GREAT for people new to the game. All these 12x12 or 16x16 matches are a slaughterfest, if any significant number of people on one side, have more experience than the other. Just FOUR out of 12 people, can completely dominate a match full of newbs.
So, in summary;
Quit putting proto people with newbs, in pub matches. The newbs will be happier and stick around longer. The proto people will hopefuly get bored and go play FW or PC, where they belong. |

I agree with almost everything in your post. Had to post about this bit, though. Technically speaking, what you posted, is an example of UNbalanced matchmaking.
If everyone on your side had positive KDR, then everyone on the other side, on average, had to have negative. So from their perspective, it would be unfair.

I Miss Oceania. Great place to test new equipment or just have fun with some friends as you tried out new things. Like massive tanks battles with militia fits. We would not attack anyone but the other players who agree to join in. Also crashing DS into one another as we Joust like Knights of old |

I always laugh when people say we don't have enough players to have proper matchmaking.
We need more new players for matchmaking to work.
All the new players leave because we don't have proper matchmaking.
It's a paradox, methinks, that the protostompers made up as an excuse on how we can't fix it. |

Match making fix:
You can not be matched with someone unless they are within 1 million sp up or down, if a match can not be found, 3 million sp.
Still no match? 5 million and so on and so forth.
Also, I'm talking about who they match you against, not who's on your team. |

Even with the passive SP his friends will still be behind the 8 Ball. I have had my character since the closed beta. However, because I did not get to play as much as my friends, I was always behind the 8 ball and running with nothing but advanced suits instead of proto. I was fortunate to be in PFBHz so I had quality watching my back. I imagine it would be much more difficult running solo or in a corp full of scrubs that can not hit the broadside of a barn.
I can see why new folks have such a difficult time. However, I do not believe this will ever change. Our playing numbers are too low for quality matchmaking and the EVE universe was dog eat dog. The difference there was folks did not have to constantly engage in battles so at least EVE was playable to noobs. In Dust, you have to fight, so noobs get destroyed on a constant basis.

There should be no SP cap until at least 6 million. That is when players can start to be competitive
I actually think that players should be able to pick any suit or weapon (up to advanced) they want during academy and there is no skill required to use them (but this is only in Academy). It allows them to figure out what they like and which route they would like to go. Once they graduate from Academy, they will have a pool of SP to use towards that path.
Matchmaking - We just dont have the numbers for it unfortunately. |

problem with this is the lack of militia gear types I.E, scrambler rifles, and HMGs, if there was a militia variant of all weapons this would work a lot better |

Let's discourage all new players from playing this game. Once the people who have protos suits get tired of playing only other people with proto suits and not having any newbs to target practice they'll quit out of boredom. Then, the game will either die or newbs will fill the void and the whole process starts all over again. I'm hoping for the first option. |

Yeah i admit our corp used to use asia/oceana as an almost training server. the mosre experienced of us would take newer players in and let them get used to the controls ect. seeing as this is the case then how about a new matchmaking option for a 'training' arena where there are limitations on module use? |

Academy needs to be based on more than 1200 WP or whatever it is now. If they made it 5k, then maybe people would last much longer when they're out in the real world. |
