Yesterday, My Corp mate had his name of six months taken away from him as it was deemed offensive. his name was "September11 2000 fun" a name he took from the American prime time TV series Family Guy. If this name was SO offensive to people, then why has the American FCC allowing it to be continually aired on prime time television?. This came as a shock, but we know of the culprit who submitted the report on him. The culprit was a self described vehicle veteran and while the man did have some mad skills he was a bit of an ******* to the squad barking out orders and such and taking all the fun out of the match. Subsequently he was kicked from the squad. I might add that he found our squad through the squad finder and "September11 2000 fun" was the squad leader. He even stated that he joined our squad because he liked his name. After having his inflated ego bruised, he then submitted a request to have his name removed deeming it offensive, and CCP complied. This power of censorship was given to this whiny player by CCP. It could be you that is next. Like this post if you agree this player went too far. and was given too much power. when all he had to do is block my friend.

Although I do find the name funny, it's only funny to those who saw the episode of Family Guy. I can imagine that even if that player you mentioned never saw the name, eventually someone else would complain about it. I'm just surprised that it took six months for someone to notice at all. |

"If you don't like it, don't read it" - Larry Flint. Comedy Central allows cussing and has shown nudity - does that mean it's okay for everyone to allow those things?
Personally idc - but your logic is skewed in favor of your friend. What's allowed on cable TV has nothing to do with what's allowed on a player to player interactive environment. Your friend had a bad name - someone used it against him to accomplish his own vendetta. That's life. Accept it and move on instead of crying that it's unfair when it's your friends fault for having bad taste. |

Agreed, but that's all he is guilty of is bad taste. The point I'm making is the power given to said vindictive player. If it were multiple players complaining then sure my friend would have just taken a new name. And I'm not taking about Comedy central, I'm talking FOX prime time. |

You're not deleted when you get reported.
Your name is just changed to something like "Minmatar Mercenary 'Insert Number here'" or something similar.
At least, thats how I think it works. |

9/11 did not cause a war in the middle east. It was used as an excuse for two of them, but that is all.
I had seen the guy around, thought the name was a great one.
I agree that using a name like that is asking for someone to report it, and CCP did exactly what they should have done.
But the name is funny.

I would like you to tell those who lost someone during that day to "HTFU". Seriously I do. I wouldnt make a lighthearted joke if someone you cared about died in that manner, so I see no reason why you would do the same, then again, I guess you're different.

Guess what! Even in America your rights don't exist. Freedom of speech let's you say things, but only until certain groups come out and tell you no and then force you to do a public apology. "If you don't like it, don't read it" - Larry Flint. I seriously doubt the GĮĢFox GadenGĮĨ will be the next to fall prey to the sensors.
The name GĮĢSeptember11 2000 funGĮĨ is offensive. The humour of Family Guy relies on the shock value of offensive stuff to surprise the audience and make them laugh. It walks a fine line, because if the material is not shocking enough people wonGĮÖt find it funny, and if the material is too shocking then people wonGĮÖt find it funny.
I would say that if it aired on National Television in the country that the joke pokes at, then that is grounds for appeal. He might want to try putting in a ticket about it, explaining the origin of the name. Maybe they will reconsider.
Although to be quite honest, the name sucks, and I am sure your friend could find a better one if he thought about it. You did much better than your friend did on name choice. |

If you say 2000fun really fast, you'll get something similar to 2001 but with the word "fun" associated with that specific date. Just look at press about 200fun or 2000fun family guy and you'll understand why many people find it over the top offensive. |

Something being a terrible event doesn't mean jokes shouldn't exist about it, especially since many things are funny directly because they are terrible (dead baby jokes, etc); that's how dark humor works. Something being a terrible event doesn't mean jokes shouldn't exist about it, especially since many things are funny directly because they are terrible (dead baby jokes, etc); that's how dark humor works. It may not be funny to you (understandably, and I'm sorry you experienced that loss), but doesn't mean other people finding it funny is a problem, or that the joke shouldn't be made.
So men and women dying in that tragic event is funny? People jumping out of buildings because their skin was melting from the heat is funny? Not knowing where your family is and not receiving answers is funny? A war that broke out from it is funny? Losing friends in that event was funny?
That's dark humor? Well I guess its dark humor when you get punched and kicked in your face for saying such offenses to the wrong person.
You guys who agree with that bs, I don't know how yall were raised, but there's just some things that you don't joke about.
9/11 is one of em and there' s plenty that would give you the whooping your parents never did but you definitely deserve for uttering such to put things in proper perspective for you.
You ever heard of the term, tact? You and others lack it greatly... |

This is why the tactics the Japanese used at Pearl Harbor(the whole war really) are frowned upon, while whoever did 9/11 are considered cowards by most people.
That name would probably get banned though, because it would offend someone. As a general rule of thumb, don't name yourself after ANY historic conflict, no matter how long ago it happened because people like to hold on to grudges for generations. |

Well no, not by itself, but invoking it in a shock-value sort of way can be funny. I knew people I really cared about that died, but doesn't make the method of their death somehow off limits to me.
Another way something horrible can be presented as funny if it subverts your expectations and surprises you. One example: "My girlfriend is into some really strange roleplay when we have sex. She always insists on pretending to be 14 years old. I don't get why, she'll be 14 in a couple of years anyway." This joke is about something horrible, but achieves humor by using the setup to mess with our expectations. It could be argued that the 9/11 joke is funny because of its unexpected nature as well.
I'm not the one who made the name, just saying just because something is horrible it shouldn't be used in a joke. |

"If you don't like it, don't read it" - Larry Flint.
2 things 1 your quote does not apply to this situation, larry flint is talking about a magazine that is kept hidden from public view and you have to specifically ask for or pick out (some places keep it behind the counter others put a piece of cardboard up that only shows the title of the mag).
Secondly thanks to the magic of the EULA, CCP can determine what is and what is not offensive and censor as they see fit, there is no free speech in a game or on a forum. They determine the rules. Free speech only applies to speaking out loud or publicizing your own media. |

No it is not funny or appropriate to joke about events where thousands of people lost their lives and that led to war. I did 12 months in Afghanistan and that **** is not ******* funny. The 9/11 attack resulted in a war that I and many others had to fight and watch good friends die in. How the **** could you find something like that funny. You are 1 sick piece of ****. |

It is obvious to me that OP was not directly effected by this tragedy as he was probably a young child at the time without a frame of reference. I am not defending him so much as stating that it was not his problem and he clearly lacks the mental facilities that would allow him piece together why this would be considered offensive.
Either that or his trolling level is over 9000.

I find it hilarious that Americans get all up in arms about what happens to them, but I bet you secretly make all sorts of awful jokes about the muhj when they eat a Paveway.
When I was in Afghanistan, the level of hatred for the Afghan people, and some of the jokes I heard, would offend almost anyone.
At least when I was in Chad there were fewer Americans around to disgust me with their racism masking as patriotism.
But hey, mister soft skin, I have a great joke for you.

No joke about people dieing is acceptable. Am I guilty of it yea probably especially while deployed, different time and I was a different person. That does not make it right. As for your opinions about Americans we don't give a ****. Do I like or even respect the haji's hell no but but I am not going to make a joke about them dieing. We Americans have a valid reason for disliking haji's, they killed over 3000 noncombatants on 9/11. Those that support it deserve the same fate as those who planned it, a bullet in the ******* head. As far as I am concerned if you want to make a joke about it you deserve the same. |

OK then.
First, if killing civilians is justified because of 9/11, then 9/11 was justified by American adventures elsewhere before it.
Very slippery slope.
9/11 was a criminal act(The WTC part anyway, Pentagon is fair play), but an appropriate response was not Afghanistan, and it certainly wasn't Iraq. In fact, if you want to give yourself excuses, imagine how many 9/11's worth of credit has to be given to the Iraqis and the Pakistanis.
Killing civilians is wrong. On that score alone the US is so far ahead of Al Qaeda that it is a no contest for at least the next decade.
I just want you to know that I am out there telling the most horrible jokes about 9/11 every day. I am glad you think I deserve a bullet for that.
Now, go "defend freedom" away from me. I wouldn't trust you with a box of ammo let alone a rifle. Guys like you blow their own foot off to get home early.
