I wonder if its safe to name a character after a pearl harbor joke now, or if that would get me reported also. |

It's not anything to be taken lightly. Family Guy is a crass show where there's no shortage of criticism about everything that walks on this earth.
It's just not cool. Something being a terrible event doesn't mean jokes shouldn't exist about it, especially since many things are funny directly because they are terrible (dead baby jokes, etc); that's how dark humor works. It may not be funny to you (understandably, and I'm sorry you experienced that loss), but doesn't mean other people finding it funny is a problem, or that the joke shouldn't be made. |

It may not be funny to you (understandably, and I'm sorry you experienced that loss), but doesn't mean other people finding it funny is a problem, or that the joke shouldn't be made. So men and women dying in that tragic event is funny? People jumping out of buildings because their skin was melting from the heat is funny? Not knowing where your family is and not receiving answers is funny? A war that broke out from it is funny? Losing friends in that event was funny?
Well no, not by itself, but invoking it in a shock-value sort of way can be funny. I knew people I really cared about that died, but doesn't make the method of their death somehow off limits to me.
Another way something horrible can be presented as funny if it subverts your expectations and surprises you. One example: "My girlfriend is into some really strange roleplay when we have sex. She always insists on pretending to be 14 years old. I don't get why, she'll be 14 in a couple of years anyway." This joke is about something horrible, but achieves humor by using the setup to mess with our expectations. It could be argued that the 9/11 joke is funny because of its unexpected nature as well.
I'm not the one who made the name, just saying just because something is horrible it shouldn't be used in a joke. |
