I have seen what the numbers are though another thread. We should all know that the average amount of players in one of the populated servers is 45k people though this by what I know about fps is not enough to keep a fps alive. lets think about cod black ops one I remember that in its hight it had a average of about 500k people on at once.
I am just wondering what you are doing. thank you for taking the time to read this. |

It's more like 2500, 45k is the total eve server of which there is only one. But thanks for playing.

MAG didn't have a very good ad campaign, and they averaged what dust does total per faction (3 factions with 2k~4k players). Many people have tried and passed on dust. If the game was in a stable place as far as mechanics, word of mouth would be more than enough to get numbers up. |

Silly wabbits, DUST is using you as test bunnies for its real FPS PC game that they will release when they get the kinks worked out using DUST as a cover game until they figure out how to do a FPS.
You didn't think you'd get the actual game for free did you?
UnlessGǪ [sigh] they actually made DUST the real game and totally dropped the ball on almost every front.
Sounds more like CCP to do the latter. I thought they had some grand scheme up their sleeve for EVE Incarna and then it hit and ohGǪ that's all? Just that? Nothing more? OhGǪ |

Still, I think something other than PVP would go a ways toward keeping new players. That initial 500k sp really isn't enough to go around, and providing a "safer" environment while people become familiar with the game play itself would help greatly.

Well can't really tress enough the importance of advertising new meaningful updates on channels such as Playstation blog, EVE and of course trough Dust community (Youtube channels, blogs etc). New stuff and fixes brings back old players and often introduces game to new players as well.
Passive SP is already a great way to at least make the returning players feel very welcome. |

Although your input is greatly appreciative, informative, and generally wonderful. This still does not propose a answer to my question.
I still have to thank you for correcting me on the active players for dust 514. It is much more heartening to know it is 50 thousand players instead of the original 3 thousand.

There really needs to be more content before CCP decides to start pushing Dust more. As long as dust has a stable playerbase I beliece CCP would try to do like eve, slow boil it.
Eve was never really massively advertised (well one year they had some trailers before some movies) and it has done well. I think once CCP gets to a point where they are seeing a good jump in player retention past the academy then they should think about pushing dust more. |

I too believe that CCP isn't really interested in pushing the advertising and gathering large amounts of players yet. We all assume that CCP must be really pushing for 1M players right now, but I bet they are more focused on getting 25k dedicated people that are happy with the game, and slowly pushing it up as the year/years pass by.
As stated, Eve was a very slow crawl upwards, and with the time commitment CCP is willing to put into development, they don't need the massively inflated numbers most new releases of FPS games get.
This will be a new development cycle that you haven't seen before in this genre, and as such, you can't compare the current flavors to this new one. Granted, current console FPSers are a fickle bunch, but if you can bring a few dropouts back over the years, it will have the staying power.
TL;DR I bet you'll see more advertising next holiday season, once most of the core content has been released and balanced. |

I'd like to add to my former post that this is not necessarily true. While many of us would love the addition of PvE, this will do nothing to boost the numbers present in PvP, which is where the balancing passes must occur.
CCP has to do their best to keep the current 3500 concurrent users engaged in the same activity as much as possible to get the balancing as close as they can.
In the end, PvE will be much needed and probably a heavily invested role in the survivability of Dust, but not until PvP core content is released and balanced. |

What you saying is, that player retention in Dust is practically 0%, of 45k unique players everyday, NONE of them stays in the game for longer than 10 minutes. So is about... 3000 people constantly Pubstomping, and 45k potential costumers leaving everyday. You talk me that i can't read graphics, but your interpretation of them is a bit OFF. |

CCP is busy talking to people who want to keep all the lousy players out of FW. Can't say I blame them... but at the same time if people can't be given new and interesting things to do what will they stay for?
New player thinking... "Okay, if I spend a year I'll have a some SP and good enough fit to get into a decent corp assuming I'm an above average player. If I'm not above average I can play pub matches forever and never play in any fun reindeer games."
It would be nice half the player base didn't feel that there was no future for them beyond endless pub matches. |

oh not a correction an estimate sorry should have stated such.
As for what or how CCP answering the question of how to retain new players... I haven't had the slightest clue of how they went about it but I did point them to dozens of posts and threads from the community. Its up to ccp to decide feasible, useable, tangible and ultimately effective.
Would a shooting range keep a player long enough to try dust 514 on day 2? maybe if it came with preview of weapons you can't skill for yet. Maybe not.
You can imagine these sort of questions and answers are asked at every possible feature suggested by us and their own development processes. some have been asked before by other teams. Some have been proven answers from other development teams to which I am sad to say marketing can be rather hurtful here at times. |

You don't understand... THAT is the problem, you can't push or force people to join a Corp, they have to Enjoy the game first, then they have to WANT to join a Corp. If people don't enjoy the game for at least one solid week, they will NEVER join a Corp. In fact most people won't even think about anything like Corps, to they feel familiar with the game. |

Bartimaeus, to your point, I disagree that now is the time to step up advertising. Here's why...
To get the 45K number IWS quoted the game must be having a 2 hour rolling average of about 4000 players. That means each player is playing for about an hour before moving on. That's pretty casual play. From the forums and listening to chat in-game I get the impression a large proportion of those players are experienced players keeping their hand in while the game matures.
The new player experience is generally considered to be terrible, suggesting the conversion of new players to on-going players at this time would not be very productive.
While the once-a-month updates that have started to roll out are promising, the game is still a cut below the competition in some critical areas -- namely: variety of weapons and dropsuits, SP compensation for in-game activities, vehicle diversity - balance - and operation, and the previously named new player experience.
The next few months will bring the heaviest influx of new games and equipment of the year. That comes with the biggest marketing push by the companies involved.
I believe it is in CCP's best interest to work hard to make the game better for the next four months, do what needs to be done to hold the players they have, and -- after the blush of new games wears off after the first of the year, position itself as the alternative to the flavor-of-the-month competition.
Ramping up advertising now would be counter productive.
That being said -- I also believe CCP's marketing effort for DUST 514 needs serious review during the same time period so it is competitive when the time comes to ramp it up. That's a steep hill to climb when you consider things like Battlefield's Battle Log or even the outreach efforts of emerging games like Star Citizen.

Well counting variants as CoD and many other modern shooters would have (lets keep meta-levels out as CoD doesn't have such nor do most games) we have a failry decent number of guns, morso than some of the older Unreals. Same can be said for classes as we do have more of invent your own class deal going. There are no real defined roles, just enablers on suits.
As for tanks and vehicles we're doing nearly 2x better than most other games to which are just copied reskins of each other with the same stats but look different for team a and b, whereas in dust 514, the two races we have are functionally different. |

And now I am at 1k cert points again I am too afraid to spend it on anything the way SOE been swinging the nerf bat against 'necessary' tools to basically do the bare minimum job.

Call of Duty has absolutely no respecs.
Neither does Halo.
Meanwhile the only game I ever recall in the rpg leveling history of shooters that did offer respecs is no longer online.

Also the number of guns as no correlation to how well kept players can be.
One of the most interesting games of the last decade only had 1 gun in it in both of its games. Your points are well made. And on reflection I didn't make that part of my argument accurately.
DUST 514 is different from other shooters in a lot of ways and the "defects" I suggested are in reference to those differences rather than the competition. Here's what I mean.
Taken on it's own terms I believe DUST 514 needs a diversity and lore-consistent range of equipment and I agree with the community it is incomplete in weapons, drop suits and vehicles.
I also believe several aspects of vehicles need work -- drop ship handling, vehicle roles, WP for vehicle activities, ...
That translates into player retention -- after they get past the new player experience -- because the completeness of those aspects of the game contributes strongly to long-term involvement. Not because DUST 514 is short on guns or tanks but because in it's own terms it needs to fulfil the MMO aspects of the design.
DUST 514 is, then, a cut below the competition because it is less of what it is trying to be than the competition is of what it is trying to be. |

How is respec even a problem ? You know as well as i do, that the real problem have always been Equipment, to be specific; Prototype Gear. Give people a respec, and you will have more Protobears and more Pubstomps. Why no one in CCP or in the CPM wants to accept this FACT? I know is complications with AUR and all that crap, but maybe it is time to start thinking about the unpopular FULL game RESET. |

Yes, but if you advertise while DUST is still in its rather dull state, what was it all for?
Fix game, advert then.
if we advertise now, then we are basically losing everyone we gain, as they see totally polished, short-term games coming out that they can splurge 60 Bucks on and get a great experience, as opposed to play this, and realize they could go splurge 60, and get Instant-Gratification.

That's a steep hill to climb when you consider things like Battlefield's Battle Log or even the outreach efforts of emerging games like Star Citizen. never said that they should push advertising just wanted to know what they plan to do |

And now I am at 1k cert points again I am too afraid to spend it on anything the way SOE been swinging the nerf bat against 'necessary' tools to basically do the bare minimum job. Also to more directly address your point. Call of Duty has absolutely no respecs. Neither does Halo. How is respec even a problem ? You know as well as i do, that the real problem have always been Equipment, to be specific; Prototype Gear. Give people a respec, and you will have more Protobears and more Pubstomps. Why no one in CCP or in the CPM wants to accept this FACT? I know is complications with AUR and all that crap, but maybe it is time to start thinking about the unpopular FULL game RESET. as sad as this point is it is there. |

I am just wondering what you are doing. thank you for taking the time to read this. CCP's masterplan seems to work. That's the only reason they merged the numbers anyway, to scam people thinking the game would actually be alive. Yea yea we get it, one universe, one server, one total player count, lalala. Call of Duty has absolutely no respecs.
Neither does Halo.
Meanwhile the only game I ever recall in the rpg leveling history of shooters that did offer respecs is no longer online.
Check Mate.
I can't speak from experience regarding the Planetside series. Call of duty also doesn't have a skill system. (perks don't count) Halo doesn't use skill points in altering your character.
Mag had a beautiful respec system. You maxed a role, got bored, then reskilled into something else. For being stuck in a primitive environment, Mag's soldiers adapted better than our mercs.

CCP will start marketing the **** out of DUST when the game is closer to being complete. Turn off adblock and go to pretty much any (reasonably-sized) MMO or gaming site. There are EVE ads everywhere. They really didn't start doing that until around 2007 (4 years after EVE was released). |

As you can see during weekdays it's usually below 4000 but on weekends it gets more like 4200 on average |

eve has an even better system unlike dust in just 2 months you can fly multiple roles easily.
Dust has too much sp for such a small pool of content, something's got to give... ever since we woke up release day and all training times were increased three fold with no new content added and no explanation why this was good for the game...
seriously guys it's allready ver 24 years with all racial basic content plus fight jets and more dust will have upwards 60 years skilling system in a few years... that's compared to eve onlines 14 year system... which is a game with 10 years of expansion...
anyone ever think the problem with dust is the training speed should increased x4 fold... I'm not joking it should mimic eve online training speed time with boosters. have 32 years of skills in 4 years not at release when the game doesn't even have the basic content in... why would you balance the training times on that without player feedback after a year of beta testing a different system no one complained about?
Why can't the shield skill once again boost both drop suits and vhecials? |
