So i'm around 2 months in, finally feeling the Dust flow, made a ton of headway with my skills, feeling good in general.
Then I see this-
http://eve-offline.net/?server=dust
I had figured the gloom and doom stuff I hear on the forums from time to time was all just being over blown, but looking at the numbers for the past month is pretty depressing. I'm really enjoying Dust (as frustrating as it has been) and I hope beyond all hope that it survives and grows strong.
But those are some ****** numbers.
Hoping they aren't accurate. |

Keep in mind those numbers are instantaneous figures - not the entire population of the playerbase.... It would probably be a fair estimate to say there's an active playerbase of 30-40k ish |

As others pointed out those numbers are people who are logged at that specific time, 4k is your general average population for non megahit population.

HAWKEN died because of MWO. Most people didn't want a mech-themed FPS, they wanted a mech simulation. |

It should also be pointed out that there is a monthly ebb and flow of players in the game that is quite evident if you look at the three month graph. You'll see that most months we taper off and this month is no different. |

There are so many problems with this game yet it has so much potential.
Lets just look at one key fact. Look at those graphs, notices how the daily player figure gets towards the end of the day and people are being kicked off and stuff left, right and center.
Notice how the graph gets very jagged as people are constantly logging on and being disconnected / logging off. Obviously the servers have issues.
CCP breaks things, people have trouble playing or start to quit, eventually CCP fix said issues, the server numbers slowly pick up, and then another patch comes out where they break **** even more. So the numbers fall off again.... its a cycle. |

I am not sure but the largest complaints coming from that game is empty matches... There was an article about the development team being laid off recently too around places I am not sure if its a means to shut down the game or get new blood in as the Hawken Developers are mostly all green twigs. |

According to the Wikipedia article for Dust, there are going to be Exoskeletons. I don't know how accurate or updated that article is, however. |

The fact that you can actually see that numbers explains everything. CCP knows exactly what it will take to increase the player-base, but they are "Crowd Controlling" the community to they are happy with the game mechanics and content. |

Considering that the average age of PS3 gamer's is 25-30 years old, school is irrelevant. Also i believe that the average age of EvE players is around 30 years old ? |

School might be largely irrelevant, but college and university isn't. Also remember how averages work, if the average player age is 25, then about 50% are younger (assuming a fairly even distribution).
EDIT: As someone else already said, those numbers indicate an active player base of around 30-40k and a semi-active player base that is probably much higher. (it is impossible to get an accurate number from PCU graphs, and even more impossible since Dust is a free game with no subs to count.) |

Most of the players that I end up playing with are still in High School and have not been around nearly as much. That's just my personal experience, though. I'm not sure why people want to discredit the 'school' angle - it happens with every MMO/Online game. |

DUST hasn't been and isn't marketable yet ... if it was pushed now it would get an influx of players that wouldn't stick around.
It's not going to be easy with the upcoming other releases and PS4 etc. but finding the right time to push marketing after we have a good solid game will bring a solid playerbase to stay.
We're not far off that 'good solid game' stage, once player trading and market and some PVE elements are introduced with the full set of racials and fighters n MAVs n speeders that are all ment to be coming soon, I think we'll be in a strong position to find that perfect time to invest heavily in marketing. |

Keep drinking the koolaid. Whole corps/clans/gaming communities have moved on. You must have forgotten this "game" has been released for 7 months already and we are still only 20-30% of total content. |

this is very true. i'm 33. i have a house, job, and family to take care of. the only time i can play is saturday and sunday nights from around 9-10pm ET till about 12-1230am ET. if i can, i sneak in some more time, but that is VERY rare. it's not that i don't like the game, it's just that my life cannot revolve around it. SOME can, MOST can't.
we had a corp member on last night how had to leave quickly because his kid had a nightmare. i've had to leave several times because my kid woke up, or my wife came home early .
this game really isn't a tween/teen game (like COD is). most MMOs aren't. a lot of the people in my corp are over 18, most even older. i've only come across a couple of kiddies (i can tell by their voices) in the 15 months i've been playing. school might have summers off, work doesn't. i think CCP knows this. i think their survey will confirm it. |

To the point of the size of the player base...
If the three-hour rolling average is about 3,000 players then the player base is between 20,000 and 30,000 players. Only CCP knows for sure of course. IWS may have been given the actual numbers but just not be able to share them.
To the point of the game dying...
I've said before it is a matter of the will of CCP management. I believe that if they stick with it they can bring this off but it will cost them a ton of money, time and effort to do it. They may not be able to keep it up but indications are they intend to push through.
Now, predictions! I'll enjoy coming back to this in March to see how badly I did
October, November and December will hit DUST 514 hard because of competition from the industry gearing up for the holidays and people being more involved in non-game activities after the Summer and through the end of the year.
DUST 514's numbers will shrink but rebound in February after the blush of competition has run it's course. That is because there is a counter balance we see in comments on the forums and hear in chat. People are invested in DUST 514 and stick with it even though their participation is sporadic. They come back to check it out after they burn out. That's easy to do because it doesn't cost anything and they can continue to accrue Skill Points while they are away. They are motivated to do it because there is now a stream of updates. The darkest hours will be in December and January.
As other folks have pointed out there are always new people trying the game out but the terrible new player experience is a major issue with the game and one, historically, CCP has not overcome. CCP will revamp the NPE but it will fall short. At the same time the gun game and straight shooter aspects of the game will get better and new players who jump in clueless will get that first kill quicker and -- possibly -- more of them will hang in long enough to get involved. |

BOOOOMMMM, that was my mind, as id never thought of this idea. and YES this seems like it would go hand in hand.
mabey a sub category under LAV for "merc exoskeletons." it might inject new life into the game. but at the cost of development resources, they dont seem to have extras of at the moment. seeing as were missing half the vehicles and alot of the suits, as of now |
