The thing is ALL games are 'always in decline' to date there is only ONE subscription game over a year old that still retains a player gain count and we all know who that one is.
As for every other game it's expected to happen, its why call of duty makes sequels, its why planetside 2 exists, its why some good games get shut down. What makes Dust 514's chart if you were to just only draw the peaks only is that our population doesn't decline a long time after a patch but actually grows which is rather odd and that normally our largest chunks lost are typically right after a patch, where as most other games gain a substantial number of folks after a 'content' patch then go back into decline again.
BTW Dropsuits are technically exoskeletons already, however the medium sized combat frame we're talking about is an MTAC, Mechanized Torso - Articulated Chassis which makes is a slightly more complicated machine than the old world MTs which were basically walkers. The main difference between walkers and these things is the addition of arms. |

I will say the first time I REALLY heard about and got solid info on Dust was in a Game Informer Magazine article (I think it was last Januarys issue). It was not a review, I may have missed the actual review due to complications from moving (didn't get GI for a good 5 or 6 months). I remember reading the article (which did not have many positive things to say about Dust) and quickly moving on. At the time, when I thought F2P I thought smart phone market games, and that kept me from jumping in.
I had vaguely heard about Dust before this, but I don't remember where and my knowledge about the game was virtually non existent.
I got into Dust because I have very few games (i'm extremely picky about which games I keep, I don't even buy a game anymore unless I feel like I could keep coming back to it and having fun for at least 2 years) and I had just gotten strung out on Skyrim again. I got on PSN, not looking for Dust, but knowing that F2P had started to creep onto consoles, and I figured i'd grab a crappy little free game to entertain me for a few days. That was like 2 months ago, and I haven't played anything but Dust since.
Anyway, my point is advertisement for Dust should be stronger/more abundant. I know CCP is working with a smaller advertising budget than say a Triple A title, and i'm sure they have future advertising plans. I look at the forums and see so many with the "come back in a few months to see how things have changed" mindset, and that's all fine and good. But what about those who never check it out? Many won't "come back and see", because they were never here to begin with. I for one was pretty surprised to learn of the continuing activity and intensity of development on Dust when I started. The game is "out of Beta" (I know some chuckle at this) yet CCP is still hard at work adding to and fixing Dust.
I'm no marketing exec, and maybe I've just missed the lions share of Dust advertising, but I would imagine it would behoove CCP to pick a point (maybe post 1.5) where they can say "we are ready to introduce a whole new group of people to Dust", then go on an extremely aggressive marketing campaign. Let everyone know Dust is here, it's undergone some work, and there is still a ton of new **** coming.
I for one will be here until they shut the servers down whether that's in a year, or 10 years, because at the end of the day I enjoy the game. I've thrown down a little cash, getting ready to throw down some more. Hoping to see Dust floating around on my PS3 for many years to come. |

EVE had constant "EVE is dying" threads even when it hit the 10 year anniversary. Taking the game's forums as a basis for that game's longevity estimate can have some pretty confusing results. DUST will die if one day CCP management decides to no longer allocate it's resources to development of the game. And this decision may, or may not have anything to do with server population. As far as I know about how CCP operates, they will not kill DUST in any near future regardless of player population. Difficult and underwhelming start is not exactly news to these guys. |

After working through the new patch and getting to grips with the aim assist, ive fallen in love with dust again. Since picking it up in February and getting to grips with fps ( came from a racing game background ) ive not had a game part from skyrim or gt5 that ive invested so much of my time into. And im going to keep investing time even if gta 5 takes me away for a month or 2.

well let us the test pigs for awhile. This is a great game but it has it flaws. Let us take the slashing and ride it all the way to the carrying the cross. The remaining playerbase wlll take the flaws and tell them how they will be corrected. Once Dust goes on to the Ps4 it should at least got itself together, if not then we wasted our time. Its a gamble my friends |

More people would be nice, as it feels the game is comming along nicely. But I don't complain since finding matches only takes seconds and most of the time they're full and with the new matchmaking system, quite balanced :)
I think the only people who would notice more players are corps doing PC, since there are only a fixed number of districts in Molden Heath. |

considering there's 4 game types, Ambush/dom/skir/FW, and the fact there's a max of 32 people per game, whats the ******* issue. means there can be over 100 games open at one time. That is active enough for me. Still seeing new faces, but still a manageable amount of people where I can remember certain players by name, wither they have an AV from hell fit, or refuse to play in anything other than their Sunday best, in all matches. I think that's still plenty of people considering the rough time this game has had over the past year. We're probably not going to see Dust consistently above 6k players again until they're finished getting all the bugs fixed, mechanics working properly, PVE, and racial everything into the game. Once they do we should see 10k at least. Probably a lot more than that.

So Dust is only a seasonal game? I'm not attacking CCP at all with my OP, but the argument that "summer is over" and that's why the numbers are where they are at is an extremely weak one at best.
Unless the majority of the player base are children.
And before people start freaking out, I work 50+ hours a week and attend college (albeit part time). I don't have children, so I save some time there, but summer being over is a ****** excuse. |

How does anyone here still believe any single number or stat associated with this game?
For a game that touts itself as a spreadsheet shooter, how can so many numbers be so nonsensical, unexplained, inaccurate, and just flat out wrong? |

DUST is still in beta, even if they were technically obligated by their contract with Sony to release when they did. We're working through the bugs, helping CCP polish core mechanics, and buying them time to fill in the missing racial variants of stuff. Once they have a solid NPE implemented and the rest of the content is available (and possibly ready for the PS4), I think we will see a much bigger push into the market.
Spending advertising dollars right now would be a waste, because the rough edges will turn away all but the most dedicated players in the game's current form. It's much harder to bring back someone who had a miserable experience, than bring in someone who has never played before. Hopefully DUST will get a fresh set of reviews at this point and people will come to see what this game has to offer. |
