I thought it was to keep hardcore players from out pacing casuals/new players.
Wouldn't it be better if CCP took 25% of the player with the most lifetime SP and made that the starting SP for new players? This would allow new/ casual players to defend themselves better. |

it was originally put in place so the people that don't have time to play the game wont feel so behind real gamers.....
needless to say it backfired miserably and even the real gamers wont log on anymore..
bottom line, casuals should never be able to make real gamers suffer, but that is what happened. |

It would also ruin any reason to get more sp after a time because you can simply create a new character and fill out a full role. |

The cap is a terrible idea, hell the entire leveling system we currently have is a terrible idea It needs much consolidation and SP prices cut across the board

The cap is there so newer players can't catch up..I've got 13m and that's enough to compete for pc but not very good options |

I would like to see a global cap, which means the most anybody could have gotten, is the new cap. So if you are at that point, you can only get 190k + passive each week. |

Then again, without the cap people would no doubt be demanding new skills by now since SP grinding is the only "content" we have. By now, even if they add some real content and better reasons for playing the game will still revolve around SP rather than, well, whatever they add... kinda sad. |

Your 'real gamers' shtick is arse in text form, but you have the general idea. It was meant to be used to prevent people from grinding out everything in a week, but also to promote daily/weekly play. With new players coming in, they were meant to go through the same steps.
This is NOT, however, a 'filthy casuals ruin my fun' thing.
The game world is FAR too small for the newer players to succeed while under cap restrictions. In EVE I can just put around in Hi Sec to avoid the PvP, Low to avoid the big scary ships, and only go to null/wormhole when ready. here, everyone of every tier is jumbled together, some solo and some grouped, so in EVE terms a newbie corp can have a Titan hottdropped onto them at any time, perhaps a fleet of supercaps, and they just have to take it. Meanwhile, the Supercap corps have no reliable way to confront other Supercap corps and no incentive to even try. Ergo, the players are all thrown into a blender with the top left off and what we have left are those who haven't given up. The new players that can't catch up are hopelessly outclassed gear wise, the old players are hampered by random teams, and the big fish can't find a way to beat each other over the head so they're stuck in a small pond.
In short, the SP cap is only part of the problem, the crap matchmaking and lack of endgame exacerbate it into a fullon shitstorm. Subpoint: Defining people by 'casual' and 'real' is idiotic. |

Cap exists to pad CCPs pockets, plain and simple. It's not about preventing new players from catching up because at around 15 mil SP you can pretty much roll with the big boys in all the ways that matter. If you want to get there faster, you need to buy boosters and hence purchase Aurum.
Imagine what it'd be like if there was no cap. If the SP gain rate remained the same, I would earn 800k SP a week from active alone by playing during evenings and on weekends. With the purchase of a single Merc Pack and buying another active booster with the AUR, I could get around 11 mil SP in two months time, including unboosted passive.
With the present cap it'd take 3.5 months for me to earn that much, and that's with running actives and Omega passives.
So in the first instance I can spend $20 to get 11 mil, but in the second I'd need to spend at least $70ish to reach that much SP. If I didn't use boosters at all, I'd need nearly 6 months to get that much SP. |
