Because it's more real if you can't hear you missing your target 400m away (or would you be ok with hearing the miss sound with one second delay aka speed of sound?) |

As a sniper, I attract the attention of other snipers quite a lot. As an expert on the matter, I assure you there is a sound. It is my cue to jump and run. you just have to pay attention. |

Oh I think I misunderstood you, my bad, for some reason I though you meant the sniper hearing the sound of miss - not if I get shot at. That sound is there (or at least it has been since I've heard it many times when they miss me).

After reading that thread about sound in this game, I went and borrowed quality headphones from a friend to see if the sounds really were done well.
I can confirm that with headphones on, the sound is there, and it's not THAT quiet, unless you have a squadmate playing some crappy music in the background.
Kinda feels rubbish listening to sounds from my TV speakers now |

that might be it.. the sounds effect are probably just not up to par with the headsets. The the distinction is pretty difficult to tell especially in a firefight. |

Holy ****, sniper main here (not EXTREMELY impressive, but my averages in matches are around 25-0, depending if I get a good spot).
Lets straighten some things out... You do hear a noise when a bullet whizzes by you; Either you are deaf, daft, or a combination of both. Go play as a sniper and **** off some other snipers as well. When those snipers try to snipe you back, start strafing, and you will hear bullets whiz by. If you are still skeptical, then you are obviously just on the forums to s**t post and start trouble, and have nothing to actively contribute.
If it's one thing I have seen as the largest "nerf" to snipers (and this means rail tanks and infantry snipers alike), it's the rendering distance of objects, which after about 300 meters, you can't see any person unless someone spots them for you, and even then, its a small name tag with a chevron hovering over an invisible body.
As far as countering snipers... Dropships and Rail Tanks are the best method (snipers can't shoot through armor of a tank or a dropship, but trust me when I say that I've eaten my fair share of cannon juice/missiles from tanks and dropships alike) which is a perfectly viable strategy that I feel is balanced; Tanks can't get to VERY high and articulate places, but they can sure take out installations and infantry from a distance. Not only this, but when a sniper fires his weapon, his signature profile jumps up, and anything can see him for miles...
I would love to continue this talk, but it's getting late, and at this time of night, I usually run out of patience with the whole "why-can't-my-AR-and-Mass-Driver-kill-that-sniper-in-the-tower" kind of arguments and people.
P.S.: You are probably over-specialized in a type of role that isn't mean't to take out snipers. If I were to act how you just did, then I should probably start asking CCP to lower the flight ceiling for Dropships so that my Laser Rifle and AV grenades stand a chance. |

This is a good reason why most people might not hear sniper bullets coming individually; There are probably noises from almost every weapon in the book when it comes to close quarter firefights, and at that time, listening for a sniper bullet is probably not as important as shooting the guy running at you full speed clutching a grenade with your name on it. |

the snipers are the biggest load of crap in this game because you don't compensate for bullet drop, you get the most open battlefields in history, and more importantly you can't be touch by anything other than another sniper and if your rocking a heavy or commando suit your fuc king easily getting 15 and 0 kills all the time. Shi t like that makes the leaderboards in this game the biggest joke of all time. its sh it like that makes me throw up on Dust because someone can shoot me but and cannot drive my LAV to their location if their in redline and slice their throat with my nova knife. its shi t like that makes any means of closing in on a sniper pointless and more importantly stupid. I Never saw this much deaths in a shooter even in MAG there shooting in that was harder because of the maps had plenty of cover for the infantry to press forward. |

I started sniping again and man are some people stupid. They bunch up in one area and think nobodies going to see us. 4 drop and they still keep coming to that same spot. The distant rendering thing is BS because of the AR514 crowd. I cant kill them with my insert AR and that means its not fair and there weapon is OP. I should be able to shoot the sun and the moon and make it rain when I willed it too because I use an AR and I am not smart enough to take cover. Quit John Wayning it and learn some tactics. Also I red line snipe because its a tactical move and allows me to remain safe as I rain death upon the battlefield. I do get counter sniped and it frustrates me because I cannot see who shot me due to poor graphics rendering. Here is a no brainer 300 meters is less than a thousand feet or just over three football fields. When I was in the Corp we shot at 500 yards with a M16A2 service rifle with no scope. I can put 8 out of 10 rounds into a mans heart and 10 out of 10 in to a mans chest from that range. So the sniper rifle in the game is a joke considering my M16 had more range. There is 5280 Feet in a mile which equals just over 1609 Meters so place the limit at 800 meters and that would be more realistic than it is now. |

realism is something games can aspire to but with current limitations in hardware as concerns median user budgets, network capabilities as concerns latency and finally creating a GAME that is enjoyable across a spectrum of personalities and tastes... is usually not worth it.
Learn the limitations and quirks of the system.
Fun fact: with 2 stacked enhanced signature dampeners, your chevron won't show up at distances of around >300 metres, even if you are in plain sight, certainly not without precision enhancers. This I noticed with a corpmate on the red side, they were inna scout suit btw. |

There is indeed a sound but I don't believe it is consistent. There are times I hear it and other times when I know a sniper is shooting at me (after one hit and I start strafing) and there is no sound. May be bugged and that is why people are reporting different things.
Sound is a key part of tactical awareness and I hope to see this be more consistent. |
